Why we went and what we needed

We decided to do an impromptu trip after Christmas and before New Year’s while the kids were off school. With an 8-year-old and a 6-year-old, we wanted something walkable, packed with indoor activities, and yes, an indoor pool. My wife and I also wanted museums the kids would actually enjoy. Washington, D.C. was the perfect fit. We found a last minute deal on Priceline and recruited another family with kids the same ages to join us for our road trip. It worked out great.

What we saw and did

• The National Mall: A short walk from the hotel, it’s a perfect place to hit multiple indoor museums without reorienting the whole day. Even in December the walk felt manageable with breaks.

• Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum: Book your timeslot in advance. We did and it saved us waiting in line. The kids loved the interactive exhibits and flight displays. It’s a must when you have curious kids who like hands-on stuff.

• Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History: Our oldest read every plaque and watched every video she could find. The hall of fossils and the ocean exhibits kept her glued, and my youngest liked the lively displays and scale models. Plan for a couple of hours minimum.

• The International Spy Museum: We did the full tour and it was the highlight for my oldest. The museum is fun, interactive, and surprisingly deep. Again, book tickets ahead of time, especially for the full tour.

• Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Reflecting Pool, World War II Memorial: We walked these. They’re close enough to string together on a family-friendly stroll.

• University of Maryland basketball game in College Park: This was a treat and a change of pace from museums. The arena atmosphere was lively and it’s a fun way to spend an evening with kids who can handle staying up later. At the end of the game, all kids in attendance were invited to come down onto the court, which, as an alumnus, was really cool.

Food and neighborhoods we liked

We moved as a pack of eight so meals needed to be simple and satisfying.

• Carmine’s: Family-style portions and classic Italian fare. It’s reliable when you want something hearty after a long day of walking.

• Good Company Donuts and Cafe: Perfect for a morning sugar boost or an afternoon treat. The kids loved the selection.

• Levain Bakery in Georgetown: A must if you want an iconic cookie. We popped in after walking around Georgetown and it was worth the calories.

• Flavio in Georgetown: A nice dinner option, good place to relax after a day of sightseeing.

The hotel’s free breakfast also saved time on busy mornings. We often grabbed an early bite and headed straight to the museums.

What the kids loved (and what to expect)

My oldest devoured museum media. She watched videos, read signs, and emerged ready to tell us all that she learned. The Spy Museum captured her imagination and was the highlight. My youngest liked the pool best. The Mall involved a lot of walking for her little legs, which meant a lot of shoulder rides and frequent snack breaks.

If you’re traveling with young kids, plan shorter museum blocks and intersperse them with pool time, snacks, or a slower activity.

Logistics and practical tips

A few things that made the trip smoother, and a couple of things I’d do differently next time:

• Book the Spy Museum and Air and Space Museum time slots ahead of time online. It’s easy to do and avoids long waits.

• Bring snacks.

• Bathrooms are few and far between on the Mall.

• Parking at the Hyatt Regency is valet, which made it easy to load and unload the car. We left the car at the hotel most days and walked to the Mall and nearby restaurants.

• The hotel’s indoor pool is shared with the gym. It’s perfect for parents who want to split responsibilities, but note that it’s not a separate kids-only area.

• Dress in layers. December in D.C. can be chilly walking between sites, but museums are warm.

• Move at your kids’ pace. We broke up longer walks with stops, snacks, and pool time.
