Top Tips
- Book Kentucky Derby weekend rooms 6-12 months ahead; hotel rates for early May can increase several-fold. Early booking helps avoid steep price surges - consider loyalty programs for additional value during this high-demand period.
- Louisville (SDF) and Lexington (LEX) airports are 10-20 minutes by car from their respective downtowns. Expect to pay $25-$40 for a taxi or ride-share during peak hours; check the hotel’s shuttle schedule for possible savings.
- Downtown parking averages $15-$35 nightly for garages or $20-$40 for valet at central hotels in Louisville and Lexington. Compare hotel parking rates with nearby public garages and verify any in/out privileges before booking.
- Mammoth Cave area hotels are limited and fill up quickly for summer weekends, so reserve 3-6 months in advance. If park lodging is unavailable, book accommodations in Glasgow or Bowling Green (20-35 minutes by car) and confirm late check-in policies.
- Bourbon Trail weekends bring high demand to small-town hotels in Bardstown, Frankfort, and Clermont. Weekend nights often sell out - reserve months ahead or choose Louisville or Lexington for expanded lodging options and better availability.
- Historic inns and small-town B&Bs in Bourbon Country often lack elevators. Request a ground-floor or accessible room in advance if you need step-free access, and verify availability of ramps or visual alarms directly with the property.
- Kentucky summer highs average 86-90°F (30-32°C) with high humidity. Confirm in-room air conditioning when booking, and ask about extra fans or rapid maintenance support, especially if you are sensitive to heat or humidity.
- Peak severe weather runs March-May in Kentucky. Verify your hotel’s tornado and storm shelter procedures at check-in, ask if emergency text alerts are offered, and identify the location of designated shelters.
- Tipping customs: $1-$2 per bag for bell staff, $3-$5 for valet, and $3-$5 per day for housekeeping. Add gratuities for complimentary breakfast servers; factor these costs into your nightly expenses for full transparency.
- Compare online travel agency (OTA) rates with direct booking. Most hotels in Kentucky do not charge resort fees. Booking direct may include free cancellation, loyalty perks, or late checkout - confirm specific benefits before reserving.
