Top Tips
- Book hotels well in advance, especially near Pisa International Airport, since these fill quickly during the June-August tourist peak. Reserve at least 4 to 6 weeks ahead for best availability and check for free or flexible cancellation options for added security.
- Prioritize hotels with direct PisaMover access or a scheduled shuttle to Pisa International Airport for faster transfers. Look for properties within 500 m of a PisaMover stop or offering shuttles every 30-60 minutes. Confirm shuttle schedules before arrival, as times can vary.
- Be prepared for the local tourist tax (Tassa di Soggiorno), typically €1.50 to €5 per person, per night (approx. $2 to $5.50 USD, verify for latest rates), payable at check-out. Verify the exact fee with your hotel, as it may differ by star rating or location.
- Have your physical passport or EU ID card ready at check-in, as Italian law requires hotels to register guests with local police. This applies to all guests, including minors.
- Familiarize yourself with Italian tipping etiquette. While restaurant bills may include a service charge (servizio or coperto), a small tip of €1-€2 (approx. $1.10-$2.20 USD) for hotel bell staff or housekeeping is appreciated but never mandatory. Check your bill before tipping.
- Learn a few common Italian phrases such as 'Buongiorno' (Good morning), 'Per favore' (Please), and 'Grazie' (Thank you) to enhance hotel interactions. Print or save a short list of five basic phrases for quick reference during your stay.
- Confirm Wi-Fi and air conditioning availability when booking, since quality and presence can vary, especially in older buildings. Request written confirmation from your hotel if reliable Wi-Fi or AC is essential to your stay.
- Ask hotel staff for local dining recommendations, highlighting any dietary preferences (e.g., vegetarian, gluten-free). Explore eateries within 1 km for more authentic Tuscan cuisine and added convenience.
- Secure valuables in crowded locations like Piazza dei Miracoli or Pisa Centrale train station by keeping items out of sight. Most hotels offer in-room safes or front-desk storage for passports and electronics - verify availability at check-in.
- Respect quiet hours (ore del silenzio) usually enforced from 22:00 to 08:00 and during lunch (14:00 to 16:00). Policies may vary by hotel or neighborhood, so verify specific quiet hours with reception on arrival to avoid disruption.
- Bring a Type F or Type L power adapter for Italy's 230V, 50Hz electrical outlets to ensure device compatibility. Consider an adapter with USB ports for multiple devices and double-check your electronics’ voltage requirements before you travel.
- For families, request cribs, connecting rooms, or child-friendly amenities directly with the hotel when booking, as availability may be limited and extra charges may apply. Ask about step-free access or accessible rooms if you have specific mobility needs.
