- My Family and I had a lovely stay at El Buho and will definately come again, if we have a chance.Everything was perfect: clean, friendly stuff, delicuous food and the view - it is just more than GREAT ?Thanks a lot! I will definately recommend it.
- Nice lagoon front natural place
Cons -
- Was not provided a phone number for help the staff leaves at 7pm and returns at 10 am so you are on your own. They don't allow you to bring food or drinks but the restaurant also closes at 630pm. They don't clean your room unless you pay you have to pay extra for towels since you have to take out your own trash they should give you bags but they didn't.
- The beach club and restaurant is a separate company from the hotel so if you wanna eat and drink there you have to go with their quite overpriced menu. Discount for guests staying there would be nice.

being right on the water was wonderful
the rooms, the staff, the bathroom
Location right on the water. Beautiful
So many problems. Hurricane was due to hit so flight was cancelled and rescheduled for a day later, but they would not refund us. There were 7 of us in 3 rooms, no refunds. One night the power went out and we had electronic key cards that would not work. It was very very hot and we had to keep the door opened for fresh air but none of us slept because we were afraid… having been robbed in bed before… we called emailed and texted all the numbers for help because there is no staff there at night… not even one reply. So very rude. I absolutely would not recommend this place. Nobody here takes any responsibility… it was very aggravating. No one ever responded and the Italian owner was at the property the day before. Bad business and unsafe. Techo house music starts at noon daily. Bummer because it’s so peaceful before then. You have to pay extra, a daily fee to hang out in those huts. 1/2 hour walk to town… in the heat it’s pretty brutal. So save your taxi drivers number do you can use him again. They sell day passes for people to come use these facilities fyi. Foods not good here but it was great at both hotel restaurants on both sides of us. Short 3 or 4 min walk
The view from the rooms is amazing! Hanging outside during the day was beautiful and comfortable. The staff had good drink service during their limited hours: 12:00pm-8:00pmThe neighboring hotels on both sides (Raiz & Los Aluxes) had great Wifi, food and service. We were very grateful they were nearby!
I've never felt so unsafe in a hotel before. The staff is entirely gone at 8:00pm when the 'beach club' closes. I was with a group of 7 girls and while the gate locks at night, we are exposed to the lagoon. We weren't too worried for our first 3 nights, but then the electricity went out on the 4th night. The hotels on both side were well-lit, so it was a fuse issue. No emergency contact was provided so we called all of the numbers on the website multiple times. It was HOT so we had to keep our doors open (with loose screens). A couple of hours after the electricity went out, the battery that runs the locks also stopped working. I called and/or messaged every hour between 11:00pm and 6:00am because we truly were scared and several of us did not sleep. We were 7 girls alone in a hotel exposed to the lagoon in a dark hotel with no ability to lock ourselves in or rooms to keep us safe and no action or even a response from the hotel management. My messages were ignored until 9:30am. They said there were power outages all over the city, yet our neighbors were all well-lighted. 'Coincidentally' at 12:03pm the next day, just after their staff arrived to run the beach club, power was restored. We went 11 hours with no electricity and had a sleepless, unsafe night. I asked management to refund that night but was ignored. This is not a 3-star hotel and very overpriced....it isn't even a hotel as you are totally on your own (not even an emergency contact) from 8:00pm - 8:00am, when the front-desk person arrives (He/She should learn where the fuse box is.) They only clean your room if you stay more than 3 nights. The Wifi only started working after the power outage when they flipped the fuse. If you book here, keep your expectations low.
I loved the location and how quiet the place was
The room that they gave us flooded so they had to put us in the second floor which was a better room but it did not have hot water
Isolated location (out of town) with overpriced food. Basic dated room in need of maintenance and cleaning to meet price point
Booked deal included a breakfast however this accommodation does not offer breakfast.
Great view and lake access, but it's a beach club first then a hotel, so keep note in regards to sou
The facilities were great. Loved our days in the water. Great little beach club. My massage was amazing. The sweetest lady. Cute cabins to stay in Location was great. 20 minute walk to restaurants and stores.
Bathroom not its own room. Toilet right behind bed. No privacy
The setting and beach club facility was pretty however on the weekend it was full of young people just trying to get the posing shots. We seemed to be the only couple wanting to swim and have fun in the water. Monday was completely opposite and was totally quiet. The rooms are very secure with a highly sophisticated key card system.
We were extremely disappointed with our stay. I booked this initially as more of a "luxury stay" for my partners birthday however for the price point I absolutely wouldn't recommend this place. Room and deck seemed run down and staff quite rude.We weren't told anything about the facilities at check-in but it turns out the bar and restaurant on site doesn't open until 1pm so we were unable to get any food or drink in the morning. Luckily we had some water with us because the only bottle that was provided we had used to fill the coffee machine. My partner went in search of a coffee in the morning because our coffee machine in the room didn't work (mentioned to the girl on the desk but nothing got done about it) but because of the location being so far out of town there was nothing easily accessible and after 10 minutes of walking around he finally found a hotel that allowed him to buy a coffee there. There are no staff working after 9pm and until 9am which means there's no one to ask questions to (like where to buy food, coffee or water - or for any extras needed) and we were only provided with half a toilet roll so when that ran out we had to go and take sheets out of the common area toilet. We're not fussy people and are totally okay living with basic (we stayed in a no AC, no running water beach hut before moving to this place) but when you pay this sort of price you except a certain level of service and standard that we just didn't receive. Some useful info to note on the rooms (we stayed in Fuscia) - the outside terrace is shared with the next door room with only a planter to separate you. There is no drawers or wardrobe in the room (wasn't an issue for 2 nights but any more than that I like to be able to unpack!).
Beautiful location. Friendly staff.
Room was on the small side.
The incredible location of El Búho almost makes up for its shortcomings. Great lounge areas on the grounds and really versatile dock on the lagoon with breathtaking views. Without a doubt, the highlight of El Búho.Some advice, take the hour kayak rental over breakfast as the options are bland and boring. You can kayak to some really beautiful spots first in the morning, then get a real breakfast in town. The restaurant does have good (Italian) food for lunch/dinner and plenty of drink options. All the staff, from the hotel to the restaurant, were very friendly and helpful. Expect to be charged for everything extra (management).
Loud inescapable pop/edm music is played from speakers in every corner of the property from noon to 8pm. This degree of audible stimulus will transform any experience, so prepare yourself for top 40s dance hit to drown out any sounds of birds and waves. Be advised: the A-frame rooms do not have any bathroom separation. As absurd as it sounds, you practically use the toilet for a bedside table. Zero privacy. Also, the hot water never arrived. We would not stay there again.
It had wifi and was in Bacalar
Honestly I left a review on trip advisor too. I got into town a day early so I tried out another hotel in town on the water for half the price. If they’d had space I’d have gone back there even with the non refundable room fee because the difference was so big. The breakfast was halfassedThe bedroom was live laugh love by Lisa Frank with institutional lighting and a weird entry exist system with a bed that made noise and moved all night Despite my telling them in both Spanish ms English in writing and in person it was my birthday during the 3 night stay they didn’t care enough to wish me a happy birthday This is my least favourite place I’ve stayed of my so far three weeks in Mexico
Nice location directly on the lagoon with seating areas at the lagoon plus some swings and hammocks over the lagoon.Kayak rental for guests free of charge.
The Rooms interior is very simple, very limited place for clothes, backpack etc.Furthermore the rooms are not really nice and comfortable. The Wifi connection in the Room is very bad, it works only on some position with very bad performance. They advertise that there is a restaurant which is open every day till 9pm. When I'm arrived at 8pm it was already closed for food. The next Days the Restaurant and Bar just closed, probably because of not so nice weather. However it is not nice when it is advertised and you are not able to get any drinks when you are relaxing at the lagoon.Furthermore they forbid to being own drinks to the room which is from my perspective unacceptable.Very bad price/performance ratio..
Location
Terrible service, no WiFi.We were badly welcomed,The staff was rude and incompetent We had to pay twice for a tab because they forgot we “paid” directly the night before and wouldn’t let us goThe “included” courtesy breakfast starts from 9 to 11 but at 9.30 they already ran out of half of the buffet We couldn’t leave our luggage at the reception after check inWe paid our room 200€ the night but couldn’t enjoy the beds of the sundeck neither kayak/paddle, you had to pay for this!!!
Decent location
This property is not as advertised. While it’s on the beach, the property owners treat the hotel, like a hostel. In the name of environment, charged extra for towels- not even providing hand towels. At breakfast each person was limit to a price of bread and a box of cereal. No where was this disclosed in the property description.
The deck and the lake view rooms are really nice
I have stayed in several other properties in Bacalar and they include their kayaks in your stay, here they don’t. I mean we paid 10k pesos for 2 nights and having them said you have to pay for kayaks it’s just too cheap . Breakfast is included BUT only one piece of bread per person (what?) And what really left a bad taste is that we checked out at 12, wanted to stay 2 more hours, eat at their restaurant and leave, and they made us pay a day pass to stay that extra time. Ridiculous! Also we are from Argentina and drink mate, so occasionally we would ask if they could give us hot water, they did twice the first day. The second day they told us “they didnt have water” but the restaurant was functioning no problem. Also the deck needs some love. It’s a really nice amenity but it’s looking worn and torn .Overall it’s a good location. But for the price you pay for the nights, having to constantly pay for something extra is just stupid. Even in camping sites the kayaks are included! Again, I have stayed in several other properties and I probably won’t stay here again because of that mentality
I won't stay there in a feature trip.
We didn't have hot water for a shower. The host didn't response our call about it. The cost vs experience is very bad. The lunch was very bad too.
Amazing location right by the Lagoon( I wouldn’t take another road acomodation when in Bacalar, must be waterfront!!).This property has really nice structure to enjoy the lagoon, and we absolutely loved it!Breakfast also a plus, simple but quality yogurt and granola, really enjoyed it too!Friendly staff, let us use the outside showers after check out. The restaurant had amazing pastas and risotto as well.
In my entire trip, that was the only place where I was charged a different price than what was written @ booking. Apparently they have different rules you should be paying attention before. Still, was worth every penny!Ah, and be careful not leaving your card inside, won’t be able to get back in unless call for help, as they’re not there 24hs
