Pros +
- Beautiful facility and rooms. Location overlooking the dunes is amazing.
- Great food and lots of choices, excellent staff that always has a smile and is proactive. Rooms are spacious, modern and clean. Great rain shower. All facilities are well maintained. Views of the dunes are stunning and were our go to place several times during the trip.
- The reception staff was very friendly and helpful, the room itself was very nice, and the room cleaning was excellent. The food selection was also great, and when dining on time, the meals were very delicious
Cons -
- Instant coffee in the room ! Even cheap hotels have a coffee maker or espresso machine !
- To be honest - it simply lacks “vibes”. The pool area is spacious but we found it boring after a day. No music, sunbed after sunbed and a pool (actually two) that are only 1.10m deep. For an adult only hotel this is quite underwhelming and disappointing to be honest. After 2-3 days we skipped to hotel pool and went to some local beach clubs with some music and direct beach access. Later one is technically there at the hotel as well, but you have to walk through the scorching hot dunes.Last but not least: the hotel advertises their two restaurants which are supposed to give you some exclusivity and a different palette of food. Honestly, the buffet was the better option for us as the difference was not really noticeable.
- There was a noticeable lack of attention to detail; for example, at check-out, there was no inquiry about my stay, no offer to store luggage, and no assistance with a taxi—just a quick goodbye. I also experienced issues when dining late (one hour before closing). The staff was already stripping the tables and preparing for the next day's breakfast, so there were no tables set for dinner. It took quite a while just to get a fork and knife. Furthermore, some food stations had already been shut down or were no longer being replenished, despite the restaurant technically being open for another hour. It feels uninviting for guests to find the service winding down around them. Why not keep some tables set up for late arrivals?Gym is a joke. I knew it was bad but that was the worst gym I have seen in larger 5 star hotels by far. Finally, the direct entrance to the beach was blocked during my stay. This required a significant detour; what is usually a 15-minute walk became a 30-minute trek to get to the water (heading towards the lighthouse).Note to future guests: The clientele here tends to be predominantly 60+. This didn’t impact my rating, but it is worth noting for younger travelers looking for a specific atmosphere.

The buffet meals from breakfast to dinner has the most extensive range every single night. The two pools are great with plenty of sunbeds. Cleanliness throughout is exceptional. Special mention to Ruben in the dining room and Gabriella the pool server who have been at the hotel a few years and are a credit to the organisation.
Actually nothing quite frankly. I have very high standards so that says something.
Lovely breakfast and generally the members of the team were very helpfulI think you will always get a few that just don't want to be thereBut the other members made up for their shortfalls
Reception Team were generally helpful apart from a chap called Enelido who was very rude and abrupt,Again, a shame because he lets his Team down because they are so polite and courteous
Great location, amazing food, friendly staff, very clean
Spa / gym area quite small
The property is extremely well kept, spotless even. Looks like a brand new hotel despite its age. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly.I spoke to the Manager and told her it was one of the top 5 hotels we’ve stayed in and we have visited 50 countries. The food in restaurant was first class.
I think for the money spent that water and coffee should not be charged for at supper. You provide it at breakfast, do the same at supper.
The breakfast and dinner offerings were excellent , great value for money. Facilities are great , and the location is unbeatable. It was our second stay , I highly recommend this hotel.
It’s impossible to say what I liked the most. Everything about this hotel was absolute perfection. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, the hotel blew my expectations out of the park. The rooms are huge, the bathroom is spotless. The pressure for the shower is excellent. The beds are ridiculously comfortable. The food is 10/10. I loved the selection in the buffet it was top class. I had a sea view which was beautiful. The dunes make you feel like you’re in the Sahara. I got my value for money staying here. I will most definitely be back, I absolutely loved it.
There is nothing I didn’t like. If I was to be picky I would say the parking is 9/10. Only roughly 20 spots but loads of street parking available.
Clean lots of space the staff are lovely friendly and helpful the food choices were fantastic plenty of sun beds two great pools plus entertainment in the evening with a couple of drinks after dinner perfect
Can’t help with this one
- very nice facility- great view to dunes- good food- enough space and sunbeds by the pool- spacious rooms
- rather expensive- breakfast finishes at 10.30 AM
Excellent breakfast and dinner and superb staff
The immediately surrounding area (other than dunes and beach) wasn't to our taste.
Decent infrastructure, swimming pool and great location
While the hotel’s infrastructure is decent and the facilities meet expectations for a resort of this category, my overall experience was completely overshadowed by the poor service and discriminatory behavior I encountered — something no guest should ever have to experience, especially at a hotel of this standard. As a Black guest, I felt repeatedly singled out and treated with suspicion throughout my stay. On multiple occasions, when trying to access my own room, I was stopped by reception staff and questioned about where I was going — as if I was an intruder rather than a paying guest. This was deeply humiliating and made me feel completely unwelcome. When I called the reception to raise this concern and simply asked that their team stop singling me out, I was met with shocking dismissiveness and rudeness. Instead of listening and taking accountability, the staff member insisted that "we don’t discriminate at Hotel Riu" — implying I was lying or overreacting — and then proceeded to cut the call without offering any solution or empathy. This response was completely unprofessional and unacceptable.Unfortunately, this lack of service orientation at the reception desk ruined what should have been a relaxing holiday. I have stayed at many hotels around the world, including in Gran Canaria, and I have never been made to feel so unwelcome or disrespected. It’s disappointing because the hotel itself has potential — good infrastructure, nice pool areas, and a pleasant location — but none of that matters when basic decency and respect for guests is absent.I sincerely hope Hotel Riu Maspalomas takes this feedback seriously and invests in proper service training for its staff — particularly around cultural sensitivity and handling guest concerns. No guest should have to experience what I went through.
Lovely hotel. Excellent customer service from all the staff who were very friendly and helpful - nothing was too much trouble. Excellent food served in the main dinning area. Bedrooms immaculate with fresh towels everyday. Outstanding location facing the Dunes. Highly recommend.
Perfect location.Attentive and ample staff.Beautifully maintained property.
Lovely pool areas, great breakfast. Great views. Appreciate the no children policy and so it was quiet. Shame about the repetitive dinner choices and the ‘gourmet’ restaurants were far from. The area was not nice enough to go out of the hotel to eat close by. Staff were nice enough but didn’t ask if we’d enjoyed our stay when we left which was odd. The cleaning staff were lovely but one day we had cockroaches in the room. I managed to catch two and throw them out of the door (nice!) I guess it happens and I let the cleaners know (I didn’t complain) but we were just left a spray of bug killer to deal with the issue ourselves rather than a deep clean (the cleaners saw the roaches I had thrown out and I had a photo of them in the room) and no one asked us if we had any further issue with them after that day or checked with us again. The singers in the bar on an evening were mostly truly terrible!
All contained in my above comments
Clean, tidy and the team were highly hospitable
The hotel was absolutely beautiful, comfortable and the staff went above and beyond to look after you. They were always smiley, pleasant, helpful and made you feel very welcome. The food was gorgeous and not the same every night, lots of opportunity to try different things, a true highlight. Our room was roomy and very comfortable with a great view of the sea and sand dunes. Two pools, gorgeous, spotless. Always enough sun beds, no need for placing towels at 6am! Lots of space in the hotel so didn’t feel squashed in. This is a true 5 star+ hotel.
The quality of the hotel was such that you didn’t need to go elsewhere but you could walk to Playa del Ingles but didn’t seem to be much there except a great market Wednesday and Saturday. However, most of the acts on at the hotel could be better. , first act ‘Frequencies’ was very good but after that they could be improved.
Great selection of food plus plenty of my favourite fruits. Should suit everyone’s tastes and dietary requirements. We sat outside everyday and the heaters made it comfortable when there was a slight chill in the morning
I can not think of anything although nothing can be perfect
The location is great, the room was nice. They have a changing and shower room if you arrive early or have a late departure, you get a welcome drink. And this is where the upsides of the stay come to an end.
The pool restaurant serves very overpriced and bland food. The absolute worst caesar salad I ever tried in my life. The chicken was super dry and felt store-bought & ready-made, no taste, tons of mayonnaise and cheese. The neighboring table also couldn’t eat theirs. The staff was fairly nice about it tho and we did not have to pay for it. Breakfast was ok, but I was very disappointed with the fact that no coffee option with non-dairy milk alternatives could be served. From an establishment like this, I would expect more than a fully automated coffee machine. Now to the worst part: Never have I ever gotten so insulted by staff. We stayed here one night for my 33rd birthday. We wanted to make it special and had requested whether the Hotel would potentially be able to prepare something for the occasion. We would not have minded to pay for it either, we just wanted a nice time. Via mail/booking we were informed that: “We will notify our team so that they can prepare something special for your stay.”Upon arrival nothing was prepared, which is not that big of a deal, but when my partner and I asked at the reception we were treated with biggest contempt by a senior staff member. What were we expecting? To get something for free? The audacity to even request such a thing, particularly (and this part was extremely ridiculous) since my birthday was not on the exact day of our stay. My birthday was on Tuesday (working week), the trip was on the weekend of the same week. Like mentioned before, we would not have had any issues with paying for the service. All we wanted was a memorable weekend. In the end that’s what we got - the attendant succeeded. We will definitely not be staying here again and we do not recommend it either. This staff member’s attitude was beyond unacceptable anywhere, but particularly for a 5* establishment.
