    Pros +

    • Friendly staff, easy check in, easy parking, amazing room, easy to use/find services like washer machine
    • We had such a lovely stay at Kiso Mikawaya. The room was clean, cosy, and very comfortable, and the atmosphere was incredibly peaceful. The absolute highlight was the onsen overlooking the mountains — it felt so relaxing and special, especially after a day of travelling. The whole place had a warm, welcoming feel that made it really memorable.
    • We really liked the room. It was very spacious and the onsen were great after walking part of the Nakasendo trail!

    Cons -

    • Nothing — everything was fantastic.
    • Very utilitarian-just what is needed. A window in my room with no bathroom would have been nice. The rooms and hallways have minimal decor/ambiance.It was hard to find-a long walk from the station after hiking the Nakasendo trail-but you can't do much about that.
    • Nothing! It was great!

this hotel is very well located, close to some restaurants and in a very quiet area. The rooms are quite big and the bed is very comfortable and the view on the river is breathtaking

The breakfast buffet and dinner was good with local pickles and a range of foods. The facility was very clean.

We were very happy with the facilities, the meals, the staff and the location. It was all we hoped for. We especially enjoyed the onsen.

Amazing little village, clean and comfortable hotel. The breakfast was great, with a nice view.

    Nothing! It was great!

    9LucasPosted on: 11-18-2025

The staff were incredibly friendly, and both dinner and breakfast were outstanding. The room was a traditional Japanese-style space with tatami mats, and mine had a beautiful view of the river. Everything was spotless and very cozy. Overall, a really pleasant and comfortable stay.

The only issue was that the room got quite chilly and a bit drafty. There was a heater, which helped, but without it the room cooled down quickly. Otherwise, nothing to complain about.

I really enjoyed my time here (and in Kiso Fukushima in general!). Perfect as a home base while doing the local Nakasendo treks. This hotel, while a bit farther than some from the train station, is right near everything else worth seeing - the public footbath, old town, some scenic bridges, Kozenji temple, and the trailhead to the underrated Joyama Nature Promenade. Staff were really lovely and friendly, and there were free coffee/tea/drinks on demand. I liked the baths here too, good sized pool and very clean. They also had a whole library to borrow if you can read Japanese and plush couches to read on in the lobby.

I didn't have a dinner plan here so can't speak to that, but at breakfast it seemed like they were a little unprepared for the busy hours. When I went down, most of the hot food dishes were empty. My room was small and had no window so got a little stuffy and dark, but wasn't bad if you ran the air conditioner to circulate.

The room, the hotel itself is very spacious. The staff is very polite and speak good english. The beds are very comfortable and the views to the kiso river is awesome

    Location and staff

There was a funky smell on the room, the bed made noises and was quite hard

    9JingPosted on: 11-1-2025

The onsen was very nice and the buffet breakfast was good.

Some areas were dusty and the shared bathrooms were a bit inconvenient.

    8MeghanaPosted on: 11-1-2025

Clean, comfy and friendly staff. Onsen was nice after a long day of hiking.

A bit pricey but breakfast was available. Nothing fancy but it was decent. Had plenty of herbal tea and coffee. A bit of a walk from the station but not bad. If you have large luggage, you will need a taxi.

Staff was super helpful, the back door of our room was faulty but they fixed it and offered a different room instead. The public bath was ok too.

    Coffee from machine

We were very happy with our spacious, comfortable room next to the river with views of the town and mountains. A good buffet breakfast was included in the price and we also opted for dinner there which was convenient and inexpensive but quality could have been better. Kiso-Fukushima is a great town on the Nakasendo Trail and there is alot to see.

    8MonikaPosted on: 10-27-2025

This building is not attractive from the outside, but don't be put off as the rooms are quite lovely! Although a little worn, the rooms are spacious and comfortable, and have a large floor to ceiling window where you can sit and enjoy the sound of the river flowing right next to you, views of the town and mountains in the distance. Kiso-Fukushima is a great town with lots to explore and see. Don't miss the public footbath! Buffet breakfast included in price.

Gozen plan dinner was convenient and good value but food only so-so.

Great location- walkable to the town and along the river. On site onsen with extended hours. Breakfast buffet included. Friendly and helpful staff

    8Lee-AnnPosted on: 10-8-2025

Nice bathing facility, relatively large rooms with comfortable beds. The buffet breakfast served mainly Japanese food options and a good selection of Japanese dinner set options to choose from.Yes the place is old but that was ok for us as part of the overall experience. Our room looked over the river which was great for some fresh air. And the Inn is located close to the free outdoor hot water foot bathing stop near the river. A favourite part of our trip.

It was a little hard to communicate with the staff in English. Not a criticism of the staff just letting other travellers know that you need to be aware.

Wonderful little hostel in Magome! They offer breakfast and dinner, which I highly recommend—truly some of the best food I had on my entire trip to Japan. The staff spoke English well and were incredibly generous; I didn’t have enough cash to pay upfront, and they trusted me to pay in the morning once the nearest ATM opened. The facilities are clean and peaceful, and I had no issues sleeping in the dorm room—it was quiet, like the rest of the Nakasendo Trail. A little oasis in Japan!

The bed and pillow were not the most comfortable but I had just walked about 20 miles (32km) so that might have had something to do with the soreness in the morning.

Nice quiet location yet walking distance to train station.

    Dated feel.
