    Pros +

    • comfortable beds. Nice hot shower.
    • The hostel is pretty. Also for easy parking, the street is in pink area meaning that full day parking cost around 4$NZ, much cheaper than the 15 asked by the hostel.
    • Nice location with the basic amenities for a comfortable stay. Quiet, especially given that it’s a hostel. Laundry and kitchen on-site were wonderful.

    Cons -

    • size
    • The bunk beds were pretty small: I'm less than 1m90 and yet I touched both extremities whilst laying flat. Also one or two more fridges would be welcome as it was not easy to find room in it.
    • Note that there is no AC, so the room can get warm during the day in the summer. It felt wonderful at night with the windows open, but beware of bugs!

    Location, free parking

Bathroom ceiling has mould growing on it…

    7LiliPosted on: 2-18-2026

    The location was great!

When a bus of high school kids took over the place, they were slamming doors and the bathrooms became terribly dirty. The women's bathroom on the second floor wasn't even available for the second night of our stay.

    Good location.

Room was very tiny, without proper airconditioning or airflow for a room where multiple people sleep. Facilities such as kitchen and bathroom were not cleaned daily as claimed by the organization, and were in general not cleaned properly.

    Disappointing

It was really hot in the rooms, no air conditioning, extremely loud, not really clean, the smell in the bathrooms…

Haka House Rotorua is a modern hostel with clean rooms and a great location. The room was light and the bed was excellent. Parking is available on the street, but for a small fee you can park across the street in a more secure parking.

    Disappointing

We booked Haka House a week in advance because my partner and I were very excited to stay there. We saw it featured in a vlog by a YouTuber we follow, and it had high ratings, so we were expecting to experience great service and a comfortable stay. Since it was summer in Rotorua, we chose Haka House over other accommodations that were much cheaper, believing the higher price would reflect better comfort and amenities. We booked one night for $189, which included one parking slot. However, when we checked in around 3:30 PM and entered our room, it was extremely hot. The first thing we looked for was a fan, but there wasn’t one. We went downstairs to ask the receptionist, only to be told that no fans were available as they were all already in use. Unfortunately, this meant we couldn’t properly rest after spending the whole day exploring in the heat. The room was so warm that we ended up going out again just to cool down and rest elsewhere.Additionally, the parking slot included in our booking was not available because the parking area at the back was already full when we came back at night. We had to park on the street directly in front of the hostel. This made us feel uneasy, especially since there were several intoxicated individuals being loud and lingering near our car. Our room was located at the front of the property, and because there was no fan, we had to keep all the windows wide open for ventilation — which made the noise even more noticeable. We stayed in Rotorua for 3 nights and 4 days, but we decided to return to our previous accommodation, Rock Solid Backpackers, which was $60 cheaper and exceeded our expectations. As a bonus, the reception staff there were very accommodating and welcoming throughout our stay.Overall, we were disappointed because we had high expectations based on reviews and recommendations. We hope management can address these issues, especially during the summer season, to improve future guests’ experiences.

Good location in Rotorua close to the park with the hot pools and not too far from the lake

The common room and kitchen were kind of a mess and really busy. The bathroom was dirty with wet paper everywhere on the floor. The twin rooms are too expensive given the service and accommodations. Also, side note, why was everyone so young? I know I am getting older but I am just 30 and I felt like all the other guests were barely 18 and all in groups, that was a weird atmosphere. Felt more like a high school than a hostel.

Clean rooms, comfy beds, probably good if you’re a couple

6 bed rooms were tiny and not big enough, hostel looked like a hotel but extremely quiet and antisocial even in peak season. I ended up moving to rock solid and the vibe were much better. Even though rotorua is a small town and only took 10 mins to walk to from bars / pak n save, it felt a bit odd walking back at night as the town gets SO quiet

It was clean and had updated facilities.

The staff was dismissive. The rooms were hot and no fans were provided. Needless to say we all slept terribly.

Middle of town, very close to everything you would want to see.Very clean and well maintained

Room wasn't well ventilated and got really hot at night.Bathroom was tiny, barely enough room to move around

Clean, safe atmosphere and good location

Staff had poor knowledge of events in area. We wanted transport to Hells Gate. Staff said we need taxi. We were able to get free shuttle from the hostel. Staff needs to know that. We want to save money when able.

Lovely clean very basic modern private room.

Needs aircon of some kind, it was very hot

    8ChristinePosted on: 2-9-2026

The beds were comfortable with charging available at the bedside and the location was good. Only knew since we stayed at the Haka house in Auckland city that you need to rent a towel (2 dollars).

When comparing to the Haka House in Auckland city, this one lacked amenities such as shampoo, body wash and a towel for the sink. There was quite some noise in the evening, but I think it was because a schoolgroup was checking in the evening.

Good location, nice staff, good facilities

    7AmitashuriPosted on: 2-5-2026

Comfortable.Staff helpful, even when they had closed Reception by 6pm, without any notice, but came to help me get in at 6:30 pm

A large tour group arrived late and made lots of noise, then again in the morning. I would have appreciated some consideration for other guests.A chair in the accessible room would be helpful.

    Nice communal area

Very small rooms, no place for the luggage

    6DanielPosted on: 2-2-2026

Good location. Room was okay, bed was comfortable.

Bathroom worked so does the job but did notice a smell linger from the toilet, had to close the seat to avoid it spreading.
