    Pros +

    • I loved the bath, the complementry wine and the garnduer of the place. The espresso coffee first thing in the morning was great and drinking it while watching the balloons go up.
    • The place was clean, tidy, beds comfy. Staff were very helpful and friendly.Free bottle of wine, choc bics, water plus tea, coffee were very nice. Plus the wine tasting of village wines at the station.
    • The rooms need bigger TV's, and fly shutter so at night you can have balcony doors open for fresh air.

    Cons -

    • The room and outlook were lovely. However, the upstairs visitors were extremely noisy, they sounded like elephants running around the room. Unfortunately, I stayed on a night when the restaurant was closed.
    • The curtains did not shut properly maybe needed attention and TV did not work plus No slippers or dressing gowns
    • TV was the size of a little lap top poor

Spacious grounds and old world charm

Not kept up on the exterior and no pool

Love the location and the gracious style of the building and furnishings.

Since our visit last year the dining experience has deteriorated markedly. Guests were surprised to discover that meals were unavailable on some nights during our stay and, even then, the offering was very limited and over-priced. Breakfast was a set price of $35 a head, for which you received one dish, juice and one hot drink. Last year we were offered the full breakfast range with toast and jams, honey and other spreads, as well as additional tea or coffee. A tiny bowl of muesli and two cups of coffee cost our friend $41.50; which convinced us to travel into Yarra Glen for an alternative start to each morning. Staff cut-backs meant that the reception desk was unmanned after 5 p.m. which caused bother to a number of guests.

    Location and garden space

Had a strong stale smell as u enter the room and room was full of ants … charging mobile device was hard as access to a power point unit was very limited,

Beautiful setting and historic building, feels like living in a different era. Very relaxing.

The hotel is outdated and would benefit from a good refurbishment. Staff is kind and welcoming but opening hours are reduced (it is an issue in the valley in general), the restaurant was not open during our stay due to weekly closure. Cleanliness can be very much improved.

    Great service by reception staff

Buildings needed general tidy up, lotsa dust and cobwebs Garden was bit overgrown. Just saw one gardener unsure how they were to manage the whole garden

    Bathroom lovely, beds comfortable

Curtain fell down behind bed on 1st night. Rang after hours, said someone would come and attend. Not attended to until house keeping came next day.

    Old world charm

Bed too soft and rooms were too warm

Great staff. Nice old property. Good size rooms and bathroom. Great shower and bath.

Air con wasn’t cold enough. Tv was tiny as could be and in a cupboard. So couldn’t watch in bed if you wanted. Long way to carry bags to our room and no staff or trolley available at the time to help. No lift to upstairs rooms. A lot of bare land. Boring to look at. Needs more nice gardens. There were some garden areas nice but other parts bare.

    Location & ambience.

Amenities, ie no milk in fridge for tea/coffee. Noting hotel room had a kettle, cups & saucers for such. Selection of soft drinks, milk, or items found in hotels today, were non existent. Gardens in neglected state. Memories of a beautiful prior stay & different experience this time. Staff were excellent.

    Location Great. Didnt do breakfast

Distance from carpark to room very difficult especially for me with a leg in a cast

    The staff and the grounds

Expensive breakfast and the property grounds need upgrading.

    8LynnPosted on: 1-27-2026

We had a great stay and we personally liked the more old fashioned feeling of the place. It was quiet and we were able to sit out on the balcony and drink our wine or tea. The staff were lovely and always helpful. It was nice to have a restaurant on site and lovely to have the complimentary wine in the room on our arrival. Great location near wineries.

We were unable to book the restaurant at the same time as the hotel as no-one responded to our messages, even though we made clear it was for a 60th birthday so it was quite important. We ended up having to book the restaurant separately via a different website so possibly the communication could be better. The spa bath needed to be cleaned of ants before we could use it, but this was attended to quickly. The restaurant could be improved. The TVs are from the 1980's.

Traditional setting and style, convenient breakfast and dinner

Pool is under maintenance. Air conditioning facilities poor. Dim lighting in room. The grounds looked neat but lacked the original maintenance of the property.

    7BrianPosted on: 1-26-2026

    Great location in Yarra Valley

Food in restaurant only average, my wife’s meal was barely warm, not good enough for the price charged. Suggest you eat out at other restaurants nearby for much better quality food.

Best nights sleep I had had in weeks. Quietness and comfort of beds and pillows. Always enjoy Sweetwater cafe for breakfast. Friendly and welcoming staff added to the experience.

Pool not in operation. Christmas Day lunch unfortunately cancelled at late notice requiring alternative arrangements having to be made.

Beautiful place. Huge rooms, gorgeous bathrooms, very private and quiet. Comfortable beds and bedding.

The staff were not around when we wanted to ask them something. There was rarely anyone around. Very impersonal when we did have contact. No ‘Where are you from?’ or ‘have you enjoyed your stay?’
