Pros +
- Location, parking, staff , lovely common areas Balcony offered great views of the harbor and hillsides. Elevators were fast tho small
- Location was great
- The staff were amazing. Our son is unable to have dairy so we asked the reception to provide soya milk and margarine, this was available for us the next day. Really accommodating. One gripe was that the kids club was not open. This really should be advertised when/ if open prior to booking. Other than that, an excellent hotel and even better staff.
Cons -
- Rooms very dated with no working refrigerator or in room coffee. Bed quite uncomfortable. Told we had to wash our own dishes but no facilities to do so. Found dish detergent at nearby Mercado.
- Room was old , nothing upgraded,Old carpet , old bed, old bathroom, old furniture, I understand about vintage hotels , but this was not vintage, this was just old furniture in an old hotel unit . For the price that I paid I expected way more for my money , this is not a 4.5 star hotel , the only good is the location..
- Breakfast was disappointing, only one old toaster for hudreds of people up to a 15 minute wait for toast, most of the hot food was cold, had to wait several times for fresh eggs and hot coffee. Canteen staff(and I would call it a canteen) were pleasant but their prime objective seemed to be clearing plates to get people through as quick as possible, twice my plate was cleared before I had finished whilst I was away waiting for toast. The evening meal in the canteen as opposed to the a la carte restaurants was virtually inedible. The booking system for the a la carte restaurants is computerised and over complicated. We eventually mangaged get bookings but not for time slots that were good for us and based on the quality of the meal in the canteen on the first night we cancelled subsequent bookings in order not to risk further dissapointment and ate out; thus negating the price included meals at the hotel. The room was very nice but I tink the decor was very 80s and there were no plugs near the beds for charging devices (phone/headphone/comuputer etc. There was a whole small cateen area in the room ( a bit bizarre ) but no tea and coffee privided. In a hotel like this I would expect a decent cup of coffee first thing. Overall I would not stay here again. The whole thing seemed like a slightly upmarket Holiday camp and I did note that a lot of people were wearing all inclusve wrist bands. Finally the bathroom had an oldfashioned shower over bath( no use at all for my partner who has athritis and couldn't get into the bath to use the shower) and the sink tap was increadibly stiff and againg I had to set it for my arthritic partner pretty dissapoiting.

Location was pretty good, nice views from the room and faily near the main part of town and not far from the beach. Room was large and clean but dated. Impessive lobby and frontage, lovely gardens and nice pools.

The entrance of the hotel is promising, the new building is nice, there is also a billiard. The restaurants are okay, if you pay for half-board, you must go there instead of the buffet. Parking.
The buffet dinner and the buffet breakfast is very very bad and poor quality. The food were not tasteful and delicious. The staff literally do not know how to make an egg. The receptionist did not want to give us invoice, we needed a more than 1 hour long debate to do that. The kind of staffs are not allowed in this category.
The best bit about the property was the location. Walking distance to the centre. The room was clean and very comfortable. Only small niggle with it was that there were no sockets by the bed which was a bit annoying for phone charging etc. We found that there were a few hidden/unclear fees. The parking is 15 euro per day and the car park space is relatively small so not guaranteed to get a space there. There is also a charge for all drinks at the evening buffet, including water, which isn’t made clear at the restaurant until after you order and are about to leave. You can specify that would like tap water though which is free. We went half board but if were to do it again wouldn’t get the dinner, the breakfast was nice but the dinner food was average, can get higher quality, cheaper food at the many restaurants and cafes in town. Overall pleasant stay though.
The staff were unfailingly polite, friendly and helpful. The accommodation was spacious and comfortable and there were several shared spaces for reading. The bar by the swimming pool was very pleasant except when it rained.
Our accommodation was newly built and was not recognised by the booking system. It was a long walk to breakfast. It took several days to find our way around the complex. To
We truly enjoyed the location of the hotel, and the staff were the real highlight of our stay. From the reception to the breakfast, buffet, and restaurant teams, the staff were incredibly welcoming, understanding, and cordial. Their warmth and professionalism really stood out. In fact, I am tempted to return to this hotel just for the exceptional reception we received from the Miramar staff.
During my recent stay, I found the room in need of updating, as it had not been updated in at least 7-8 years. While there was a TV in the lounge area, there was none in the bedroom, which was a bit of an inconvenience. The food experience was a major disappointment. The breakfast lacked sufficient protein options, with no ham available, and the bacon was of poor quality. The cheese selection was limited, and while there was a large variety of breads, none were of good quality or particularly appealing. The juices tasted artificial and lacked freshness. The dinner options were equally underwhelming. In the buffet restaurant, the salads were stale and appeared to have been prepared days earlier. The overall quality of the food did not meet the standards I would expect from a 4-star hotel. However, we did enjoy our meals at the Adega and Miramar restaurants, which were much better in terms of quality Additionally, I found it disappointing that the half-board option did not include soft drinks, as they were charged separately.Overall, while the stay had its positives, there is significant room for improvement, particularly in terms of food quality and room updates.
Property looks great from the outside and the staff is friendly
Rooms are very dated , spa area of poor quality and not at the level of a 4 stars. Food was low quality and the chef did not even know the ingredients of some dishes
Central location opposite the famous Reid Hotel. In particular the old part of the hotel and the rooms are beautiful. The staff is very accommodating.
Mostly visitors from travel agencies such as TUI, etc., very little privacy at breakfast and dinner buffet.
Comfortable room, lovely pools, nice food and entertainment (I loved the folklore dancers), polite staff, car parks available, good location. No nonsense with reserved sun loungers by the pool in the mornings. You could always find some available and the staff would come and adjust the umbrella for you.
They charged extra for water at dinner - we paid for breakfast and dinner option, so such a basic thing as water should have been included.
Great established beautiful hotel and location. Choice of pools. Jacuzzi. Sauna. Massage. Indoor pool. Great food and staff. Spotlessly clean. Great location in funchal. Beautiful gardens.
No tea or coffee or water provided complimentary in room. No shaving mirror in bathroom tricky sorting contacts in eyes a doing make up. Phone by bed didnt work.
Friendly staff and wide food service
Rooms could be cleaned better each day
Nice hotel in a good location, nice swimming pools, really great size room
The food wasn’t great at all, warm milk, things were always a little bit stale and really strange choices, bean sprouts and vegetables at breakfast!! Not a great choice in the evenings and children weren’t catered for at all, we had paid for half board and ended up eating out every night!!
We had a lovely 1 night stay here with half pension and a lot of support from Fransisco Coelho with guidance not only about hotel but also what to do in madeira on that day.
Indoor pool is cold, jacuzzi wasn’t on and had no bubbles. In general indoor facility is old
A very well designed hotel with beautiful spaces and swimming pools to relax. The food carefully prepared and delicious. Enjoyed every minute of our 1 week stay.
Our bedroom was very comfortable with a balcony and view of the mountains. The bathroom had some wear and tare, but overall satisfactory
Good location, very close to the city center. Calm.Very friendly stuff at the reception, I initially requested an earlier check-in due to my morning flight and they could make it happen.Clean rooms and friendly cleaning stuff.Comfortable rooms and nice balcony.
Although the rooms are comfy and clean, the furniture is old and there is a smell in the room from them. The smell remains on the clothes.Half-board does not make sense. Take breakfast to have something to start your day with.Food in the buffet is not tasty with little variety (in addition, dirty dishes and pigeons flying over your food in the restaurant - doors are widely opened for them to fly in). For breakfast, if you are coming late, don't expect much food to be left. The earlier, the better because many things are not refilled. For the overall class and price of the hotel there should have been a broader choice. If you order drinks, the restaurant stuff will be running after you until you pay at once for whatever you have ordered (they could do it in a friendlier manner). This is the usual policy in the hotel as it seems they don't trust you have the means to pay your bills. The restaurant stuff cannot be blamed for the attitude, they just adhere to what their employer asks them to do. Not a big deal as such you might think at first but leaves an unpleasant impression of how you as traveller and visitor are seen by the hotel management. Why you cannot pay such small bills during check-out, I was not explained.Overall, would not come again.
Fantastic pools to swim, outdoor and indoor, also spa, jacuzzis, sauna, steam. Very good location, relatively close to city center. Very quiet, no road traffic noise - this is very rare in Funchal! Nice restaurants with various food options. VEry friendly reception and staff - they allowed us to stay in the pool and spa even after checkout, on the last day! Beautiful garden, plans, palm trees, and grass - nice sunbeds around the two pools. Very relaxing place. Strongly recommended!
We did not like that we have to pay for all the drinks at the prepaid buffet dinner, even for some water (5 EUR!). It would have been cheaper to eat out elsewhere (there are quite a few restaurants within 100 meters!) and even opt in for the dinner at the hotel on the spot would be the same price. Thus, prepaid half board is not necessarily a good idea - not even mentioning over-eating ourselves at the nice buffet... :) but the food was excellent, no question about it.
Reception staff, view from our room and quietness
The food was good in the restaurants but poor in the buffet
mostly friendly staff
Some gym equipment needs repair-rowing machine Would have liked option of bed and breakfast as apposed tohalf board
