    Pros +

    • Amazing historical place with professional staff working for mny years there. Best money for value. Big infrastructure
    • Are you a senior citizen who wants to stay at a hotel in a time warp? Old mildewy carpets, hard beds, flat lumpy pillows, loud doors, impersonal butlers hovering all around, away from the real feel of old town Funchal? This is the place for you. If you are anyone else.. stay in the other area of Funchal which is a 10-15 minute drive away. This hotel has so much potential. It has old school charm but is desperately needing some TLC. The fast talking front desk guy was helpful and the most normal employee. The few cats were cute but when I asked someone about them I was told they were going to be removed. Sadly they were my favorite part of the property. Save the cats.
    • The highlight were the staff. Very friendly and accomodating

    Cons -

    • I was disappointed about the quality of the room and furnishings given the price - it did not feel like a 5 star hotel to me. Our bathroom toilet was broken, shower was tricky with the bar in it. And the air conditioning did not work. Breakfast was good - had better quality products but was similar to other hotels of lesser quality on the island. We were left wondering what we were paying more money for. A good hotel but not good value for money or up to date with what we would want at that price
    • Value for moneyGardens need a lot of upkeepEating out not easy without at least taxi rides
    • The pool was cold, and the hot tub had to be upon request

The staff were exceptional to a person. Friendly, informative and helpful when needed. The hotel has a very peaceful, colonial feel to it; a haven of peace.

The quinta is beautiful, the pool area is amazing abd the breakfast was really good.

The hotel offers a stunning view, which is definately its highlight. It's surrended by the garden, which is beautiful, but needs a little more care. The staff was very helpful. During the breakfast you can order eggs prepared especially for you, which is good alternative to bufet served dishes.

However, the room definately is in need of renovation and lack essential amenities, e.g. lack of contact in bathroom to charge the teethbrush and shelf to put your cosmetics and laundry bag, drawers in the only waredrobe in the room were unusable, despite being lined with paper - bad smell, what made us keep our clothes in the suitcases during whole stay, damp smell in the hallway (our room was located not in main, but additional building), contact near bed situated not over the nightstands, but just above the floor, what was uncomfortable. The staff which is responsible for swimming pool maintenance did it during swimmimg pool open hours: mowing the grass, preparing the sunbeds (every day only few of them was covered by the mattresses and with towels, so ready to use, the others remains unprepared until you asked about it). Additionally, the location is quite far from the city center, making it necessary to use a car to get around. While the scenery and garden is beautiful, the overall experience could be improved with some updates and better facilities.

Beautiful property and ambience.Excellent service; professional and friendly staff.Superb cuisine.

The facilities were excellent, but what truly stood out for us was the staff. Everyone was exceptional—helpful, attentive, and always in good spirits. The pool was well-maintained, with towels and deckchairs readily available at any time of day. We also had access to the sauna. The hotel is situated away from the town center, making it peaceful and quiet. We loved the garden as well!

We loved everything, but if we had to be critical, we would mention the small water glasses at breakfast (about 150ml). We found ourselves needing to refill our water quite frequently during the meal.

Very nice gardens, feels like a little oasis

You need to walk long distances depending on the room location :) no elevators for luggage

It is a nicely located in a garden of previous quinta that serves as a la carte restaurant and bar. Quinta is the most memorable structure in the property. Furnished with old furniture and feels like an old house. Staff is nice and friendly. Rooms are spacious. Ours had gorgeous view over garden, Funchal and cliffs beyond with sunrise.

The hotel is built around the old quinta, probably in the eighties and needs serious upgrades to maintain its 5stars. Rooms and upholstered furniture seem really dated and old fashioned not in a good way. Breakfast buffet seems to be more at home in a three star hotel. Staff tries to do their best but also their service is a bit rusty. Pool area is really bad, they need a new pool, gym and sauna at least. Gardens are not well maintained, seem overgrown with dry trees…

Beautiful scenery, clean room and fantastic service - would highly recommend!

The hotel has a beautiful garden which stretches all around the property. Very well maintained with lots of different plants, trees and flowers. The swimming pool is also surrounded by nature and ends with a nice view over the sea. The bar by the pool is a pleasant spot to have a drink. Overall it looks really nice from the outside. It is also very quiet. Good place to relax. Bonus point for the lovely cat called Blackie.

The hotel is quite outdated, especially the rooms, which are not so big and with few old pieces of forniture. I get that the style of the hotel is antique and that’s fine but they should do something to enrich the rooms because they look quite dull. The staff really depends on the person. At the reception and at the pool they were all friendly and helpful. Some of the waiters were very nice and polite, others seemed a bit grumpy and irritated. On one occasion we were told to change clothes and dress more appropriately to dine at their restaurant (we were wearing shorts), which I would have even understood if the restaurant was particularly fancy and of high quality, however it turned out to be a small room that looked like the rest of the hotel (nothing special) and food was embarrassing, especially after being asked to dress appropriately, very low standards. We had fish risotto and soup. The soup was okay but the rice was severely overcooked, not creamy at all, watery and octopus was gummy. For that price and the standard they like to preach I would have expected a chef who knows basic rules of risotto and octopus. The following day I had a mushroom risotto, again overcooked and watery. Breakfast was okay but too little choice for a 5 stars hotel. The average age of guests is quite old, around 60 I would say. Many are habitual clients that come every year to relax. It looked more like a retirement home than a hotel at times. The area outside the hotel is dodgy and not so charming. Overall it was okay but not worth the money.

very friendly accommodating people , good foodnice views. Clean comfortable room.

    too far from centre

    7AlisonPosted on: 3-6-2024

Beautiful peaceful grounds. Old fashioned elegant service. Terrific buffet breakfast. Extremely pleasant helpful staff

Evening meals were poor value, food disappointed in flavour and texture. Irregular paths round garden and between main house and annexe with modern bathrooms might challenge some guests with mobility issues, as might lack of handrail on 3 stone steps up to reception and 4 wooden steps down to breakfast room.

    9AlisonPosted on: 2-28-2024

The peace and tranquility with comfortable surrounds. The cleanliness and the lovely well maintained gardens and pool area.

    10SusanPosted on: 1-11-2024

Beautiful residence and beautiful gardens with truly amazing staff

The pathways were a little difficult to walk along because of the cobblestone. It would be quite hard going for people who have mobility difficulties.

All staff were welcoming and excellent and went out of way to please. Evening dinner very pleasant and good quality

Hotel is a bit faded and could do with a touch up - but not a rejuvination.

    9ReginaPosted on: 12-11-2023

The restraunts were excellent with a variety of formality to accommodate everyone. Staff was very personable. Grounds and views were beautiful.

The pool was undergoing repairs which they said would be only 2 days but was unavailable our entire stay. They said they would make arrangements at one of the community spas but they weren’t very convenient.

    10MaryPosted on: 11-16-2023

Loved the pool area although it could look a bit more welcoming and tropical around the cafe and bar.

The pillows! They were old and awful. Decor somewhat dated
