We loved the hotel’s rural setting, high above Funchal, its old world luxury, and the quality of service offered by the staff. Best of all was the direct access to the extraordinary adjacent Palheiro garden. A very special hotel.

Location, range of rooms to sit in, friendliness of the staff

Food was expensive and a bit over-complicated, golf was expensive and clubs not very good. Show ran very hot every now and then.

This is a gorgeous, high end property. The staff was absolutely superb and treated us with the utmost respect and friendliness in spite of showing up in our hiking clothes. The history of the place is so interesting. We even saw Christina Blandy and her 2 dogs on the property. Wish we had stayed at least 2 nights.

Nice freshly renovated room, beautiful lobby and marvellous breakfast seating outside in the morning. Next to the beautiful garden and golf. Small Madeira wine tasting. Guided tour over the property with the owner.

Breakfast is a bit limited, especially at peak times.Total failure to organise golf experience, likely the hotel staff and the golf club staff do not “speak” the same language.

The air condition in the room was not efficient ,we could not sleep as the temperature was too high.This was reported to the reception but nothing could be done about it.The breakfast buffet was very poor.The choice of wines in the hotel restaurant was average.The pool was not heated.

Friendliness of the staff, location (quiet and tranquil but only a short drive to Funchal), food and gardens. Rooms very spacious and well appointed. Very clean.

Wonderful locally sourced food at breakfast and dinner - light, creative and great quality. Excellent wines through links with the Blandys wine estate.Helpful and knowledgable staff with deep knowledge of local attractions, who could help book a taxi for us when we were stranded and even gave accurate estimates of how long it would take us to walk to the pickup point.Large and well equipped rooms with air conditioning and Molton Brown toiletries. Excellent location near Funchal, located on a large and beautiful estate that is wonderful for walks. Tea house (linked to the related botanic gardens) on site, along with a wonderful restaurant and second restaurant at the golf course clubhouse.

Minor points only - liquid hand soap and separate body wash could have been provided instead of bar soap. Gym could also have been a slight bit larger. Again very minor points.

Mr. luis, I think F&B manager is the best smile, courtesy, service and recommendations where to go…most accommodating for whatever you ask for …The landscape is breathtaking.Extreme greenery & Nature & beauty. Sipping a cocktail before dinner and after outdoor is memorable

The breakfast was extremely good and the grounds lovely including the garden and the pool.

The treatments at the spa were very expensive.

Breakfast was great, the manor and the gardens are wonderful to roam around. There is a old-fashioned snooker/billiards table which is fun.

The location is a little off, so a bit out of the way, but if you are playing golf there every day, then it's perfect.
