Pros +
- Spacious room. We really loved the tatami Japanese-style room. Although the booking mentioned a shared bathroom, there was actually a private toilet and bathroom inside the room, which was a pleasant surprise. The indoor onsen is open 24 hours and is wonderful. The hotel is warm and cozy, perfect for colder weather.Guests can use the onsen facilities at other hotels within the same group (we didn’t end up using it, but it’s nice option)
- Location and value
- Spacious rooms, tattoo friendly onsen, spacious break room, kitchen amenities, accessible laundry, spacious heated drying area for snowboard gears.
Cons -
- The hotel looks a bit old, though it’s still well-maintained. No in-house restaurant, but this wasn’t an issue for us.The outdoor onsen is time-segregated for men and women, which can be inconvenient if you specifically prefer outdoor baths.
- Onsen could use some improvements, a bit old
- Photos make it look nicer than it is. I was a little misinformed because the reservation said private bathroom but when I arrived I learned that does not include a shower

Room and facilities were clean. The location was great

Great onsen.Large loungeVery clean
The hours of the open air onsen makes it so that you can't go in there on the afternoon if you are a man (reserved for women). Would be nice if they switched the hours around every other day, but that's just a personal preference.
My friend and I loved staying here. This hotel is part of a larger group of hotels, so you have access to those bath areas as well as part of an “onsen tour”. It’s very fun to walk around town and explore the different bath setups! The baths on-site are also well-maintained, and we were able to enjoy a bath while the snow fell. The hotel staff were also personable and helpful. They picked us up at the bus station, gave us local recommendations, and explained about the different hot springs. They even switched between Japanese and English depending on what we wanted to speak at the time. Our room was comfortable and surprisingly large, and warm despite the snow outside.Zao Onsen was an easy 45 minute bus ride from Yamagata City, and this hotel only a 10 minute walk from the bus station. My friend found it very straightforward to get to all the way from Tokyo. It’s also well-situated to walk all around town, whether you need to head up the mountain or down the mountain. We were there during the quiet season between autumn colors and ski season, so it was a tranquil experience.
No complaints! I do recommend calling for the pickup service when you first get in with your bags. The walk to the hotel is straightforward, but trickier in the dark and with extra weight.
Great location at Zao Onsen. Nice Onsen at hotel, public one down the street and a great one up the road in the woods ( Zao Onsen Rotemburo)
Facilities in good condition good relaxation room /onsen
Feel not a warm welcome, need service minded not only get job done
The room was spacious, clean and nice. The view from the window was charming. The onsens, both outdoor and indoor, were great, comfortable and nice. The whole hotel is a pleasant place to relax.
The onsen was spectacular after a day of skiing!
The walk up to the rope way was a bit longer than expected and uphill. Still very close just not quite as convenient as ski in/ski out.
Hotel did provide pick up service from bus terminal which is an advantage. Staff san was helpful. You can enjoy free onsen in other 7 hotels, just let the receptionist know you are hotel guest.
This is a very old hotel. The tap water took times to come out.
Room size great, short walk (150m to ski lift), large facilities, good car park
Good location
Over priced for hotel.. this may be a booking dot coms thing.Very tired, could do with a good clean and update
This hotel was great for our needs. Although a little far from the main town and icy to walk. The Onsens were great.
I felt the price was high considering shared bathroom facilities and distance to walk on icy roads to town.
Baths are great hotel location is great. Kitchen.and Communications need improvement
Not informed enough. Paid a heafty price . But still could not get enough info prior to stay.
The onsen was amazing!Large communal space with bag storage and room to change after skiing when we had checked out
It is a bit dated but we didn’t mind
Spectacular onsen! And just a short walk up to the ski field & rental shops. The staff are lovely and there’s a shuttle service to the lodge which helped when the snow was crazy. Lots of amenities.
Great location, only a short walk to the chair lifts and restaurants. The facilities were great, everything you needed was available in the communal area, and the staff was always available to help when required. The access and options for the onsen were amazing.
The only improvement would be to have some dining equipment (cups, plates, bowls, utensils) available in the individual rooms - for those who don't wish to eat in the communal area all the time.
Indoor and outdoor onset. Short walk to ski lift. Ryokan style family room.
No attached restaurant. Noisy tourists from china..
Great location and clean rooms. Good beds.
