Pros +
- The hotel is in the historical fortress of the town and the location is good. The rooms have been newly renovated and the bed was comfortable. There was also a Nespresso machine in the room. The breakfast buffet was sufficiently generous as well.
- Modern room and very comfortable bed. Good restaurant with friendly service . A nice detail is the names and stories of former soldiers throughout the building.
- Very unique stay in a historical site.Rooms converted from old barracks.Dinner was excellent.Norway Royal family has visited and dined here in the past, so must be good.General Manager Glen Thomas was very good and informative.
Cons -
- The hotel is difficult to access without a car, as there is no public transportation that goes up to the fortress. The staff at the reception were not that forthcoming. The hotel was not able to provide a late check-out or room upgrade free of charge. The hotel restaurant was closed for a private event at dinner. There are no facilities available for guests in the hotel, such as a gym, pool or spa, which you would expect for a hotel at this price category.
- It is a small climb from the parking lot. On the plus side: no cars in the actual fortress
- Area itself is quite secluded and hard to get UBER. This is great for people who want to get away from everything.

As I ordered I wasn’t aware of that if was literally inside the fortress, so that was a nice surprise to me. Beautiful place, quiet and this part of Kongsvinger was a unknown gem to me. Please take the time to explore the place and the walls that surrounds the fortress, it’s also stalactites to find, and museum summertime. The rooms are beautiful, the bathrooms are glass boxes and I assume it’s like that to meet the limits it must be to create a hotel inside an old place.
Historical fort, with imitated facilities and staff including reception did not speak english
Limited facilities inside the hotel, also, food/breakfast served are not fresh (canned), less variety and low quality. additionally the staff did not speak English.
The location of the hotel is wonderful - in the middle of the historical fortress in the city of Kongsvinger, on a hill overlooking the valley of the river Glomma. The rooms are located in the restored building of the fortress, equipped with modern comfort, the room and its interior really liked. The bathroom is made originally, equipped with detergents, which is very convenient and practical. Lighting and heating can be adjusted individually.
The organization of the staff was surprising. The reception was closed, there was no one there. There was only a piece of paper with a phone number on the door, which we called and learned that we needed to go find the door, under the entrance mat under this door there were envelopes on the ground with cards from the booked room inserted. Then we needed to go find the hotel building. When we tried to open the room with a card, the door did not open. We needed to call the employee's number again, 10 minutes later he arrived in a car, opened our room with another card and left. In the morning it was unclear in which building breakfast was and at what time. Breakfast does not correspond to the price for the room. Despite the information about the presence of a restaurant at the hotel, there was no restaurant or dinner there.
An interesting place to stay - in the old barracks block of a hilltop fortress. Great views from the grounds.Friendly welcome, spotlessly clean room, good facilities.
Breakfast a bit simple. No-one to welcome us to breakfast, no-one to ask when we ran out of things, no fresh fruit. Great decor, though.
Amazing building. The place is marvelous. Really fantastic. But I guess the room was clean more thourully after I left...
I needed to pay 500 NOK for having a dog overnight. I was really surprised with this amount - would like to be informed about it, when I called to secure a room with this possibility (I wrote several messeges that I didn't get an answer to) - not only heard an information "some additional payment". But ok - understood. And then in the bathroom I found hair which wasn't cleaned after previous guests. The room was really clean but this made me doubt why I needed to pay so much for the dog if even I didn't get wholy cleaned room in the first place. I didn't inform personel, because they weren't easy available by the desk when I came to eat breakfast.
Nice location on top of a hill with a view.
No signs outside for the hotel.Bathroom is weird glass box. Minimal breakfast.
Room was modern and comfortable
This was the most expensive hotel of a two week motorcycle trip to Norway and the most disappointing. Long wait to check in. Staff allowed other guests to barge in. Building works all around my room. Restaurant closed when we were there (Monday) and long walk/expensive taxi into town. Breakfast very poor and limited. No orange juice despite staff being asked several times. WiFi terrible.
Location
The restarant was closed. We prebooked a table over the phone, but were not told this then.
A beautiful hotel undergoing conversion from a military barracks within the castle grounds.Staff were very helpful and friendly and we ate at the resort in the evening and the food was excellent.Would recommend and I'm sure will only get better as the conversion completes
On arrival there was a distinct lack of signage, so it took a bit of sorting where to go.Parking is outside the fortress so if you have heavy bags it is a bit of a trek. The room we had was a suite and was very nice, although the lighting is over complicated and doesn't work effectively.A lack of hooks or hanging in the bathroom meant there was no where to hang towels
The bed and the Room size its so spacious
The breakfast its quite poor. Breakfast serves from 7:30 -10:00 , but when we Get There at 08.30 , it was literally just 4 pcs og bacon, 5 slices of cheese , no fruits and not even paprika and cucumber for bfast. No Staff come and check the bfast buffet and refill it. No restaurant open or Even simple bar on weekday period so we had to drive down a bit to sentrum for our dinner. We paid 2700 kr for one night and not Even a bottle of water complimentary avaiøable in the Room. Not mentioned small glasses in the room ?
This was a hotel where location meant everything, with a splendid view of the Glomma valley. There was also nice to walk in the old town right by the castle.
This hotel is advertised as a spa hotel, but there was nothing of a spa when we arrived. It was also a hotel where dinner was advertised, but no kitchen was open when we were there. The list could go on, about what was not there. There were no clear signs showing us where to find a reception, and one could also add that there were no staff around. I had to search for someone when checking in, and we spotted one at breakfast. Apart from that we were left on our own, which was a bit odd as there was a loud show outside about ten in the evening; we were not informed! The rooms were okay - apart from the messy shower - but with the price we paid, along with the advertising about the splendid view, we were not expecting our window to face right into a scaffolding and building site. This was not what we expected, especially at the price we paid!
The hotel located in very nice place. It is old fortress with nice view to the river. My kids were happy to stay there. High quality equipment and true wooden floor in the room.
The room was a little stuffy at night, which affected the quality of sleep. The hotel is located on a mountain and far from shops. This is a small test for a person to go down 1 km from the hotel without a car to the store and move back. Breakfast at the hotel from 8 to 11 am. We left the hotel at 7am and were not offered an early breakfast.
Beautiful location inside the fortress of Kongsvinger . Clean, comfortable room.Helpful and professional staffGood breakfastFast Wi-Fi
Very nice location!
We heard the person in the room next door coughing. It wasn't as soundproof as we expected.
Excellent rooms in beautiful location. Good restaurant. Friendly and professional staff. Fantastic terrace for a beer with a view.
Very unique. Location was superb
Finding it was a problem, finding the reception was also a problem.
The breakfast was great in a beautiful dining room setting. This was probably the quietest hotel we have ever stayed at. The only complaint is that it wasn't clear in the booking process and documents that the hotel was inside the fortress and local signage was poor for locating it.
There was no signage to direct us to the right location.
