    • Dinner was excellent.
    • The dinner was fabulous! Breakfast very good spread of fruits and cheeses. A decent coffee making machine is available for a selection of coffees. The room is spacious and the balcony fabulous. A pod coffee machine is also available in the room.
    • Historic hotel in a unique location. The room was large and airy with a verandah overlooking the train station. Wifi was strong. We spent some time by the hotel pool, but didn’t venture in as the water did not seem overly clean. The pool itself was quite a walk from the hotel through pleasant extensive gardens and across a dry river bed, so may not be suitable for those with mobility issues. The pub next door to the hotel was cute and had a saloon feel. Drinks prices were reasonable, but service was difficult to obtain (the staff kept wandering off and didn't seem to want to man the bar).Dinner in the evening was tasty but, again, service was hit and miss. Breakfast was very pleasant with a good continental selection and a compact menu of hot items available to order.

    Cons -

    • Room was too warm for me, and while the fan helped, aircon would have been appreciated.
    • Nothing that warrants a negative response.
    • Whilst I appreciate that the hotel is historic, it has not been maintained to a high standard. Parts of the bedroom were shabby, and the bathroom in particular was desperate for an update (cracked tiles/mould in places). The verandah was in very poor repair and didn't feel overly safe.Whilst staying in Matjiesfontein is a novelty, in reality there is very little to see or do, so one night is more than adequate.

We loved the tranquility of the hotel and the area. The bus tour, with the humorous commentary from the guide, was so enjoyable .

everything was as expected. I will stay at the Hotel anytime again.Breakfast, dinner and rooms very good.

What a wonderful, quirky old hotel! When we first arrived, we were disappointed that our large and seemingly well appointed room had a run down bathroom, a clogged sink, and no soap or shampoo provided. When we returned to the desk to alert them about the sunk, we were immediately and graciously upgraded to a beautiful room. Great, warm, jolly staff.

As mentioned above, certain rooms may need attention. Once our issue was addressed, all was well! Hotel is old and charming, as long as things are functioning, I wouldn’t change a thing!

Amazing ambience. It felt like going back in time. I read somewhere that the air out there in the Karoo is like dry champagne and it’s true. It was an absolutely magical stay. The hotel was beautiful! The staff were exceptional. They were jovial and upbeat. Nothing was too much trouble for these wonderful people. The stay at the Lord Milner will forever stay in my memory as one of the best getaways I’ve had in a very long time. The dining room is exquisite and the food was absolutely mind blowing. I feel like I could just go on and on about how wonderful that place is.

The hotel has a lot of character; the staff were friendly and helpful. The highlight of our stay was the 10min tour on the red bus through the town, the staff member who narrated the tour was very funny and made it memorable. We also arrived just before the Rovos train pulled into the station, which added a bit of excitement. Breakfast was lovely with a full spread and the omelet they made for me was amazing, one of the best I have had in a long time.

The hotel moved us into the main hotel instead of the rooms we booked in the cottages, although my mother-in-law loved the old school charm, we found the facilities lacking in comfort. My husband is over 6' and we had to squeeze into a double bed with wrought iron work at the top and bottom, needless to say, it was an extremely uncomfortable night for both of us. The hotel and rooms are seriously jaded and in need of some TLC, the windowpanes rattled in the breeze (if you could get your window open), the birds were nesting in the roof and light shone through the ceiling timber slats. I think the 3 star rating needs to be reviewed again.

The history of the place is interesting, and the proximity to Cape Town is a big plus

We had visited the hotel years ago when it was in its heyday and unfortunately it has really deteriorated substantially since then, it is in serious need of an upgrade - from the carpets to the bathrooms , a lot of aspects are not up to standard at all anymore - great pity in my opinion

An interesting historical town with a hotel keep in that time. The restaurant was excellent and both dinner and breakfast were superb. We were lucky as the Blue Train had arrived that evening and stayed there until about 8:00am the next day.

Cleanliness of the hotel and other facilities (especially the Transport Museum and the old English bus) were rather dirty. There was no water in our room and when we reported this it took over an hour before the water was restored.

    Breakfast was good, Location great

The radio in the room didn't work. If it had, it would have been really cool!

Restaurant and meals really good. Staff friendly. Great place for one night stay over.

We stayed in outside courtyard rooms. Rooms could use some extra care. Bathroom needs maintenance and a good cleanup.

Dinner - delicious food and amazing service!

Would have liked a hair dryer in the room

Old worlde charm - the manor of the Main Street! Delicious dinner. Friendly staff. Amazing museums.

Starting to feel tired and a bit neglected. Simple cosmetic touchups would do it great justice.

Location, Shortest Bus tour in world. Staff were outstanding

Dinner were really poor, steak and T bone were off. and pricey. Rooms big with alittle upgrade will look like the Lord Milner of olds.

Excellent stay in very clean and comfortable room. We travelled to many places in SA and Matjiesfontein and Lord Milner Hotel was the only place were we could see improvements made. The staff was super friendly and both dinner and breakfast excellent!!!! Please keep this "old world charm" for future generations to experience also!

The breakfast was the best we have had at a hotel. The pub lunch was good value for moneyThe gardens were very well kept and the pool was spotlessThe evening bus ride was an unexpected pleasure. The curtains in the bedroom were excellent as we like a dark room at night.

Very friendly staff we were surprised with an upgrade room. Food was delicious and the great choice of breakfast was included in the room rate. Very interesting museum and a delightful informative short trip in a double decker bus.. A step back into time. Really enjoyed our stay.

Realisation of a lifelong dream to stay in Matjiesfontein. The hotel is old and in need of a gentle revamp, but the history is everywhere which is a special experience. Particularly enjoy the cavernous dining room. Serving staff were very friendly and attentive. We had dinner and breakfast there which were tasty and well prepared.

The accomodation has seen better days and is a bit threadbare, particularly considering the daily rate. The bath and shower arrangement definitely not up to standard expected. The reception staff were not at all welcoming. At the price, more needs to be done to match the standard of accommodation with the historic charm of the town.
