- Been coming here for years.Great location- by the beautiful Tweed river. Helpful reception staff. Decent rooms if renovated which most seem to be now.Carol does a good job of looking after you in the Dining Room. Wholesome breakfast .You do need to be aware of the full on coach parties who use the hotel. Early breakfasts equals early noise near the Dining room. And a busy eating experience with a full room.
- Booked a one night stay for one person, as it was close to the location i needed to be at, reception staff was very friendly, the room was a bit dated and small, but to be fair i think this hotel is more for older guests, i would stay again if i was back at the location i was attending i think £95 was a bit steep for one night, but like i say the location was perfect for (the tempest brewery tap room) where i was attending, the bus that pulled in at 6.30am on a sunday morning was right outside my window, but all in all, yes i would return
- Bad
Cons -
- With coach party use- it’s a bit overpowering for the private guests. Noisy and packed dining room. Reminds me of school dinners ( a long time ago mind!).
- complaining about the hotel. 10 minutes we waited before someone came to the desk to check us in. Whilst I have no complaints about the bedding the rooms are tired and dated with stained carpets. We complained about the non existent hot water and were told to run it for 5 min before hot water would appear. After 5 min all we got was luke warm water at best . As I booked with you it is your responsibility as the booking agent to address the issue . £105 for a very substandard room is not acceptable and I would like compensation please . A 5hr drive to be met with such conditions is not acceptable
- Bus parties ! There were at least 5 coaches in the hotel the night we stayed. The whole hotel is geared to them. Activity boards in foyer , bus company merchandise for sale. Had we known this, we would never have stayed there. Breakfast was extremely limited , only on for 1 hour and geared to mass catering with limited choice. We went out to dinner as the £20 dinner menu was again extremely limited for the same reasons. The room was also not very clean, badly stained carpet and tired bathroom. There was a lot of noise in the hotel in general.

Location was great. Impressive building , lovely grounds. Very nice staff. The price was good.

Staff were brilliant
It needed a bit of investment and a good clean. Also sound proofing as it was very noisy
Ample parkingBreakfast was well organised, tasty and fillingFriendly staff.
The room didn't have an aerial socket, therefore no TV. The shower had the lowest water pressure I've ever experienced. Not easy to have a shower when the flow from the shower head is a trickle. The decor is very tired but it's understood that it would take significant investment to turn it around and not sure that the footfall visiting Melrose would warrant that amount of money.
A poor experience, poor décor, not worth the money, staff were ok! The diner was cold.
The quality of the room was poor. There was no hot water running at 8pm in the evening to shower after work. The Shower did provide hot water in the morning with a trickle of water. The room décor is tired and dated.
The hotel feels that it is undergoing updating, in a while it will be excellent, there was nothing wrong, the only thing was there was poor water pressure in the room.
I thought this hotel was significantly better than the ratings suggested. It's in a nice setting within walking distance of Tweedbank station and the River Tweed, and whilst the room was not large and the bathroom even smaller, it was perfectly adequate for a short stay. Staff were helpful and the evening meal was also very good value for money.
The electrical cable strung across the corridor that was getting trapped in the fire door.
Friendly, clean and comfortable
The woman at reception when we arrived was nice. And we bumped into a friendly bartender in the hallway who said 'Welcome to the Waverley Castle Hotel." (we didn't go to the bar). Everything else was not at all what you would expect for the price.
Hot water for shower and also in the wash basin only got mildly warm, even though there were signs warning of very hot water. Even to get it to 'warm' took 5+ minutes. No electricity attached to the Towel rail so couldn’t dry the towel! (even though the instructions were to 'boost' the towel rail as needed. Bath wasn’t clean and also the area around the door handle in the bathroom needed cleaning. Paid for breakfast but when we turned up the waitress ignored us until we called her attention. She greeted us with “Did you pay for breakfast?!!” in an abrupt way. Took ages for her to confirm that we did pay for breakfast and should be given a table. Huge dining room, only 2 other people there and she wanted to sit us at a cramped table in the middle of the room until we asked to sit in another set table by the window. The food was OK when it arrived, but not worth what we paid for it.
The fact I was only there for a single night which felt like an eternity.
Mostly the fact I had booked it based upon misleading deliberately false advertising and its incredibly rude staff, which would coupled with the abundance sub standard cleanliness didn't save much to like in fairness
The lady that checked me in was very helpful
My door wouldn’t close so had to put my chair behind the doorThe bathroom was freezingThe towel for the floor when getting out the shower was wet so obviously being reused from the previous guestsThe tv only had bbc channels The was a gap between the windows and the outside that I could see through
Location
Dated, cold rooms, no dinner served
Parking.
Set meals only and had to book a slot. No bar food so I went to the McDonald’s 3 miles away. Breakfast only after 8:00am.
Stayed at Waverley a number of times, when in the area always check first for availability. I just feel at home staying there.
Very small breakfast due to new owners I would say child portions, not what it used to be.
Breakfast is decent but avoid the scrambled eggs
Radiators in room 110 did not have valves so couldn't turn them off. Seems relatively simple to have a decent plumber sort this out even on the traditional cast iron radiators they had.
Although the hotel is old it is kept very nice and clean. We booked a superior double and were impressed with the size. It was great to have the sofa area, the make up area, the fridge and coffee facilities and another sitting area by the window. Although we never had time to use the restaurant or bar it was good to see them open and functioning. We had a car and were staying for an event in Tweedbank, we also enjoyed visiting Melrose for an early dinner. We could have stayed for many more nights quite comfortably. It was also nice and warm, the heating clicked on at a reasonable time (I was up at 6 and it was ok) and the duvet was very warm too. The TV had access to Netflix and Amazon prime so we enjoyed a film in bed.
Location was good. Breakfast was awful - clearly it was not freshly cooked! The bacon was grey. The egg yolk was not runny. The scrambled eggs were watery.
Breakfast needs to be majorly improved. The room windows were covered in condensation in the morning... no wonder the paint on the window frames is peeling and flaking! When we checked in, the receptionist said we had a lovely room with a garden view... we had to laugh at the view of the carpark!
the location only
it's was very run down curtains fell off the rail the place was just shabby breakfast was nice didn't have any other meals there.
