About
The Schooner Hotel is a heritage-listed 17th-century inn in the picturesque coastal village of Alnmouth, Northumberland. Next to a sandy beach in central Alnwick, the castle is close by. The hotel is easily accessible from highway A1 and just one mile from Alnmouth’s East Coast Train Station. Newcastle and the Metro Centre are a 40 minute drive away. The hotel is surrounded by beautiful countryside, perfect for walking, and there are several golf courses in the area. The Schooner has 2 cozy bars, dining facilities and an Indian restaurant. The rooms with private bathrooms have free Wi-Fi, TVs and tea/coffee making facilities. The Schooner is rumored to be haunted and has regular paranormal investigation evenings for guests. The Schooner has a rich history, with famous figures such as Charles Dickens, John Wesley, Basil Rathbone and King George III all said to have stayed there.

- The hotel was closed with no staff on site and no other guests present. On the day of our stay, we were given a door code to access the front entrance.Upon entering, it was immediately clear that the property was unsafe. There were missing floorboards, exposed wiring hanging from the ceiling, and multiple serious health and safety hazards throughout the building.Due to these conditions, we refused to stay.Further research suggests the hotel has been closed for some time, the operating company has gone into liquidation, and there are outstanding court orders against the owners. There have also been previous reports of rat infestations and long-standing health and safety issues.Despite this, the owners have refused to issue any refund. Do not stay here.
- The staff member who dealt with us was friendly and helpful. The bed was comfortable and clean. The location was beautifull and we had a sea view from room 3. Unfortunately the general condition of the hotel was a bit shabby and could do with a full redecorate.Couldn't complain as heating was on full and room was warm.
Cons -
- Rooms very grim and resembled very little like the photos , evening meals ONLY INDIAN FOOD served during the week so if you’re not into this food it’s not good should clearly state this when booking. Charged £20 per night for my small dog .🐕
- It's a dump and dangerous with it. Electric socket hanging off wall. Tv hanging off wall. Loose wire in new bathroom.New shower not connected properly with extremely hot water - dangerous. Couldn't use shower because of it. Decided not to eat there.
- Hotel was redundant/ derelict and CLOSED. No floorboards boards , wires having from ceilings, and tripping hazards. Work looks like it’s either being carried out. No staff. No other guests. Hotel was closed and health and safety hazards. Do not stay. Clearly just take money.

Walls could do with a lick of paint and just a general overhaul of carpets
Staff were friendly, it was clean, it was being renovated when we were there, so We didn't see it at it's best,But we enjoyed it.
Has always been a hotel I wanted to stay at and was highly disappointed with the hotel and lack of restaurant. Staff member wasn’t helpful either glad we didn’t stay longer
Everything the smell of gas how unclean the building was. The pictures on booking.com do not reflect the building at all. As a whole didn’t meet expectations at all
It was comfotable
I arrived, but could not access the property, fortunately a fellow guess told me I need to phone them. This requirement was not made clear by Booking.com or the hotel.
Friendly staff, good parking space, clean warm room for a cold November night, lovely cooked breakfast in the morning, great value
Nothing too dislike
Nice location
Very damp room shower didn’t work. quite tired and run down
Value for price. Warm cosy room looked newly decorated. Tiled shower room. Room with a view over roof tops to the river and fields.
The location is very good and the cooked breakfast was fine.
We had the feeling the staff were not used to running a hotel. We don't want people to be obsequious, but they were not very friendly. The cooked part of the breakfast was fine, but the rest was poor/spartan, for example there was no fruit, limited choice of tea etc. We were also not impressed with the one evening meal we had there.
Had a really good time.Staff were really friendly and helpful hotel was clean and comfortable. Would stay again
Great sea view, friendly staff, comfy bed, Good shower
Very dated
The staff were friendly and we had a sizeable room.
Unfortunately the room and the beds were full of bed bugs!
Location was excellent. Staff were excellent. The property requires further renovation.
The drain in the shower was disgusting and looked like it had not been cleaned for some time. Cleaning staff require more training. However, the bedroom and bathroom were very clean. Bedding was new and spotless.
Location
Dirty and shabby DIY used very dated
Well situated. Lovely room. Really helpful and friendly staff.
The shower was hot and the beds very comfortable
The curry on the first night was not good and the breakfasts were poor with undrinkable coffee.
The hotels location is close to the beach, golf club and on the street where all the pubs and restaurants are in Alnmouth. Although dated and in need of TLC the room was spacious, spotless and warm. The shower was hot and powerful; I've made this point as on some reviews there is some criticism. We had a meal in the interior Indian restaurant and it was surprisingly good although there were only 5 others dining. All in all we really enjoyed our stay.
The Schooner just needs a bit of TLC.
Staff were very welcoming and the beds and pillows were very comfortable.
The room needs a deep clean, coffee over the bathroom door and marks on walls, looks shabby and needs some TLC. Downstairs is more restuarant than anything else so you don't feel like you can have a drink in comfort, a missed opportunity as the restuarant was empty.
