    Pros +

    • Breakfast very good beautiful lication
    • Food was amazing.Would have liked granola on offer though
    • I liked the initial greeting by the reception supervisor. Sadly that warmth did not last.

    Cons -

    • First room absolutely tiny far too small. Second night booked superior courtyard. Absolutely disgraceful for the money over £230 for one night room definitely not up to standard for that kind of money. Also the room smelt of dogs. We were moved later in the day after complaining. But still rooms very expensive for what you get. I have definitely stayed in better.
    • Room was lovely but not very practical. No hooks to hang damp towels or shelves to put anything on. Mostly all our belongings ended up having to be put on the floor. The tea/kettle/coffee machine in wardrobe was odd as nowhere else to put it but there was no light so had to use our own key torch. Also the steam from kettle moistened our clothes.
    • Not sure where to start, the fire alarm went off at 5.30 in the morning. No staff were available at that time, so about a dozen guests came to reception for assistance.A male staff member then came out and shouted (literally shouted) at the guests to get back to their rooms. I cancelled the rest of my trip as the holiday and the visit to my family was ruined and the entire holiday was cut short.I was not offered any monetary refund for the inconvenience. The reception supervisor was cold and dismissive.I will never stay here again. Be aware.

The room was incredible. The boho vibe in the room was absolutely stunning. The exposed wood panels and little touches like a vanity within the room were exceptional. The on site restaurant served incredible food too. The hot tub was perfectly placed with a view of the country and also of the clear sky, perfect for some stargazing! Staff too were extremely attentive and additions of bottles of Prosecco for celebrating our anniversary went that extra mile - it made our stay extra special.

Nothing at all. It was perfect

The room is absoloutley amazing. Netflix on the tv. Bath was amazing. Toiletries and towels all fab. The interior is beautiful

The wind kept us up all night, which I know is not the properties fault, but we assume it is because of a thatched roof, all we heard was creaking and blowing all night, we were up every hour because of the noise blowing through the property. We went on a Sunday night & they had ran out of half the items on the food menu which we were gutted about! The food we had was very average

We absolutely loved the decor and feel of the place from the moment we got there. Every member of staff were also very attentive. There was a minor issue on arrival and we were upgraded to the farm house suite for the inconvenience. This was an amazing gesture and we were blown away when we saw it. Beautiful place to stay.

    Nothing!

Very clean, very cosy and stylish. I would love to try a room with a hot tub in future.

The pillows were very hard to sleep on. When we arrived there was no one on reception to check us in, me and partner looked around and managed to track someone down 10 minutes later.

Clean and modern room, bath was great and lovely food.

The bed was very uncomfortable, the mattress was hard.

Private hot tub just outside the room overlooking the field. We overlooked the sunset, then once it got dark and turned the garden lights off, we were enveloped by a starry sky. I saw a shooting star! it was just incredible.Moody room with dimmable lighting throughout was so nice, the best decor I've ever seen in British accommodation.Proximity to the restaurant. We wanted somewhere with a hot tub but not self-catered and not a driving distance to a restaurant. the restaurant was a few seconds walk away from our room. Just perfect! We spent most of our stay in the hot tub and it was so relaxing. The hot tub was ready to go in and was very clean! Optimal temp too. Complemented the cold February air very well.

No lighting over the dressing table, and there were 3 pods of coffee instead of 4 pods like it was meant to be. Very minor though, not something that ruined anything about our stay. Just something to bear in mind. We brought our own bottles of wine to drink in the room as the restaurant drinks were very expensive.

The property and decor are stunning. The location is wonderful.

The room had a leaking radiator and tap in the bathroom. Upon moving a chair to see the view/television we discovered nail clippings and rose petals with a mass of dust. The room was cold and terribly noisy from the adjoining rooms bathroom (you could hear everything). At dinner we ordered focaccia which was served to us toasted bread which turned out to be fully mouldy, we advised the staff. The restaurant wasn’t able to fulfil my order for main and I accepted an alternative. The female mature member of staff was quite blunt and unwelcoming whereas the younger female waitress was wonderfully friendly and attentive. Disappointing as we had really looked forward to this stay and was in excess of £200 including breakfast.

The interior design of the property was beautiful. The rooms, bathrooms and the Smithy were all beautifully designed and had a very Mediterranean feel. Loved how private the hot tub was and how close the Smithy was to the rooms so you didn’t have to go far if you needed anything. The waiters at the restaurant went out of their way to be lovely and make you feel welcome and accommodated.

The rooms could have been cleaner, there was mould around the shower doors, marks on the dresser as if spillages had happened and a wet shower still as we entered the room. There was a cat in the restaurant on our table as we entered for our reservation; my boyfriend is allergic so this isn’t exactly ideal for a restaurant to have a cat roaming around. We were also told we would be welcomed with a glass of bubbly due to it being my boyfriends birthday when we stayed, however this wasn’t mentioned until the end of the meal when we came to pay and then wasn’t offered to us, rather “did you not get it?”. There was also a dressing table but no chair, and with the only other mirrors being above the toilet and in a wardrobe door this made it difficult to get ready. These things did not affect our stay too much but worth mentioning to be improved on! Overall we did have a really lovely stay and would definitely return.

Location was convenient for us. The room was as described

We booked the room specifically for the hot tub but without a cover over in the rain, it was not pleasant to sit in. The room was very cold as the radiators hadn’t been turned on and took several hours together with the hairdryer left running on the floor for the room to become warmish. The restaurant looked promising but was, in our opinion, overpriced pub food

The room we had was really nice and well decorated. Felt really cosy and there was a decent amount of space for two. The bathroom was lovely too. We had the room with a hot tub which was an added bonus for us and it faced onto a field where we could watch the sunset. We went for a meal at the restaurant on site and it was great, the breakfast the following morning was also included and had some really good options.

There wasn’t anything we didn’t like but we found on two occasions when using the hot tub it was very hot, to the point where you couldn’t really sit in it comfortably but we weren’t sure as if it was because it was so cold outside.

The building was beautiful and very empty car park

The bed covers were very smelly especially the pillows we had to put them on the floor then woke up with a stiff neck Hotel Manager very unsympathetic- offered £10 discount - not acceptable. Pity as it is a lovely place

    6LawrencePosted on: 2-3-2025

The location of the property is excellent. Loved the hot tub.

Alarm activation in the early hours of the morning. The reception was not manned and the out of hours mobile number not answered . The person in charge was panicked and unsure how to mange the alarm activation. However after a while he resolved the matter. No fire plan in the room. No instructions about meeting point. Requested a room service menu but was requested by staff not to order food until 19:30 hours which would assist staff on duty ( busy in restaurant) this is should not be a customer issue. When room service was ordered it was not placed on a tray or food placed under a cloche .

Gorgeous facilities - very clean, comfortable and well-furnished. The staff were very welcoming on arrival. Very nice hotel - would highly recommend. Good value for money.

I didn't like the £50 upfront security deposit as well as paying for the room upfront. No take out coffee cups available which on a Sunday morning would have been appreciated as no other shops were open.

    9AlisonPosted on: 1-21-2025

Lovely friendly welcome on arrival, very good service received from restaurant and bar staff both in the evening and at breakfast which was delicious. Super comfy beds, would definitely recommend and would definitely be back!

    Absolutely nothing

It was in a lovely location, just outside Barnard Castle. The receptionist on duty was really helpful and welcoming, and indeed all the staff were just the same - nothing was too much trouble. We had an evening meal, which was really good (though the wine was very expensive for what it was, but that's a minor complaint), and the breakfast was excellent too. (Well done on the Eggs Benedict!). I think the room we had, which was one up from the smallest, was pretty small and perhaps a little dark, but it was great to have proper towels - not tea cloths - and a really good shower, which made all the difference. And to have an ironing board and iron in place was good too. We really shouldn't complain, as it was all very nice and welcoming, and we would have stayed another night, but they had a wedding so it was all booked up.

As I mentioned, the room was a bit smaller than expected and quite dark. We could have done with slightly brighter bulbs, perhaps? Wine quite expensive. Also, there were no dog treats in a dog-friendly room, but our dog didn't notice ;). That's kind of all I have to say on what we didn't like!

Disappointing, cold, dingy. Not value for money.

The room was dingy and absolutely tiny. In my opinion should not be classed as a double. Absolutely freezing, with winds blowing outside and window had been left open. The main radiator did not warm up at all. Elderly parents were left freezing. They checked out as soon as possible in the morning. Very disappointing. Not value for money either.

Stayed here for NYE for a short getaway and it was gorgeous! Very Ibiza style bohemian getaway which is right up our street. Gorgeous rooms & I paid for a cocktail making kit on arrival which was so much fun and delicious! We explored Raby Castle which is also only a short 20 minute drive away and spectacular grounds.
