About

This former Victorian sporting lodge is set in the village of Tongue in the North Highlands. Overlooking the beautiful Kyle of Tongue, Ben Loyal, Ben Hope and the ruin of Castle Varrich, it offers luxurious rooms, a cozy bar and restaurant and traditional Scottish breakfasts. Rooms at The Tongue Hotel, by Highland Coast Hotels are individually designed with period features such as wood paneling, open fires and antique furniture. Each includes a decanter of sherry, sweets, as well as a TV, tea and coffee making facilities and Gilchrist and Soames toiletries. The Tongue serves an extensive breakfast menu. Porridge, fruit, cereals and yogurts are followed by a choice of cooked Scottish breakfasts. Ingredients are locally sourced and guests can enjoy snacks and bar meals or more formal meals in the dining room, served with varied whiskey and wine menus. The area is ideal for hiking, angling and climbing in the nearby Loch Fleet and Knockan Crag National Nature Reserves. Pros +

    • The place was quaint and cozy, stuffed with super friendly and helpful people, and the restaurant served delicious meals.
    • Convenient location for the NC500 but nothing particularly special.
    • Friendly staff Nice if you want a bar and restaurant on-site Breakfast is good with cooked and continental options

    Cons -

    • While some of the decor had been recently upgraded, the lounge bar area was shabby and probably dirty. The menu was very similar to that of their sister hotel in Brora. For a one-off visit this is OK but if you’re doing the NC 500 it’s a bit of a disappointment.
    • It's an old hunting lodge. Windows are draughty and rooms are small. Had to ask for extra bedding because the room was cold. We were there during a storm and couldn't get TV reception in our room. We felt it was overpriced compared to other places on our route, even the remote ones.
    • Would have been better with more draught beer choicesDuvet was too warm for the time of year

    Food not excellent.

    Wonderful breakfast.

We booked and paid for a superior room and were given a double bed. Since they were fully booked, they did not have a room with a queen bed. At this time, we have not received compensation. The only roads into Tongue are single track so that made getting anywhere difficult. They say they are the only restaurant in the area but just around the corner is another hotel with food just as delicious. We paid £90 for dinner and we had an entree and dessert but no drinks. So very expensive and they have you at their mercy. While a beautiful bathroom, it was not well thought through. The bathroom did not have enough room for towels to dry; it was almost like it was intended for a single occupant. The only hook was behind the door so the towel we hung there never dried. The shower did not have anyplace to put cosmetics other than on the floor of the shower.

Location was good. Food was excellent Staff friendly and welcoming. Room was large and comfortable. The bathroom was big with plenty of room to move around. Locals drank in the bar and were also friendly. The recommended dark beer was very good too.

    Nothing really.

Beautiful location. Very nice property. Breakfast was wonderful. Well appointed dining area. Friendly service staff at breakfast.

Limited dinner options, set menu, over priced. Not many other dining option near by. Small room, small shower. Front manager more formal than friendly.

Great room, bed, bath AND shower. Excellent evening meal and good breakfast

Buffet part of breakfast a little thin. Cooked part excellent

Well presented, clean and tidy, good location. Good restaurant

Did not get a rebate for a breakfast as I can not eat, I live on a liquid diet that goes through a tube in my stomach so carry my own food.

The view from the room was beautiful, overlooking a castle. The overall decor and property was very nice too.

The service and overall attitude was just not at the level of a 4-star, or even a well run bed & breakfast. We arrived earlier than check-in time, and the person at the reception was almost annoyed by our presence. Nobody explained anything about the building the location, activities, services. We stayed two nights, and the room was prepped (with beds and new water) but the bathroom never cleaned. In the bathroom there was no conditioner, or body cream, only essential soap and shampoo. We booked dinner in the hotel at 8 pm, we were told it was their last service so we asked if we could come 15 min earlier to help them - also there very negative attitude and response. Very old carpet floor and no slippers… Overall not worth the price - feels more like a pub with rooms than a 4-star hotel.

A really comfortable place to stay. Great staff that went about their jobs extremely well. Food was really good and a decent selection of drinks were available at the bar. The room was clean and well decorated as was the rest of the hotel. Its location is easy to find and once there, the lovely view is the first thing that greets you.

Parking is slightly restricted. It worked out fine for me, but the perpendicular parking to the road might put some off, especially if the hotel becomes much busier. I realise there's probably not any other option than the way it is, but like I said, it didn't cause any issue for my stay.

View out of the window and comfortable bed.

Poor service and bad dinner (extremely overpriced).
