Pros +
- The people at the Lochindaal are terrific--super friendly, go out of their way to help and make you feel welcome. The family owns and operates the nearby Lochindaal Seafood Kitchen. They squeezed us in at the last minute where we enjoyed a great meal.
- The room was very good.
- Friendly staff and locals
Cons -
- Just beware that the hotel rooms are over a bar/lounge.
- Our room was just above the pub, which also was used as the local pub, whith very loud music till 1 am. Although we asked the last night tot turn the volume a bit less, they didn¿t do it.
- No, but could have done with more space for hanging clothes in our room.

No, but could have done with more space for hanging clothes in our room.
Amazing rooms and great staff. A little further from the busier but more crowded centers of Islay but still in driving distance
I wish they had a sign that reception was at the bar
Fantastic stay - the room was beautifully decorated, warm and comfortable. Provided toiletries were especially nice. The hotel bar also does a very good included breakfast.
The room was great for three people, the bathroom was spacious and modern, the beds (and couch-bed) were comfortable, and the staff were fantastic. The neighbourhood was very quiet, and the pub below the rooms was a great experience with friendly locals who wanted to chat. The breakfast was fantastic, and the seafood restaurant up the street (I believe owned by the same folks) was excellent. Be sure to make a reservation when booking, as it seemed to be a popular place - even in the off-season. If I was to visit Port Charlotte again, I wouldn't hesitate to look at this hotel first.
The only negative I have for potential travellers, and this isn't even a bad thing, is that Port Charlotte isn't the busy hub of the island. The nearby Bruichladdich distillery was stellar, but the majority of whisky action is at least 30 minutes away by car. If you have rented a vehicle and have a relaxed schedule, this would be the perfect place for a stay on Islay.
Family run hotel with cozy comfortable rooms above friendly bar. Excellent location for short walks and to explore whole island. Reccomend the Seafood Restaurant, also run by the family, just along the road.
The staff were so nice, helpful, and welcoming. The breakfast was delicious and there was a wide variety of options. The room was cozy and the bed was amazingly comfortable. There were cordless chargers, tea and cookies, and an espresso maker. The entire hotel is quaint and charming and it's in a great location near restaurants and the Islay Museum and a 45 minute walk directly to the Bruichladdich distillery along a stunningly beautiful coastal path.
Port Charlotte is very small so there aren’t many places to stay. The Lochindaal Hotel is on the main road so it’s a convenient location but there isn’t much nearby, or in town for that matter. The road has reduced speed and there isn’t much past Port Charlotte, so it’s a quiet neighborhood. The staff were very kind and accommodating! The bed was incredibly comfortable - a 9/10! The towels were large and soft but one was new so I got covered with lint. The breakfast was made to order with some cold grab-and-go items available.
We stayed in the Peat House which is located at the back of the property. To enter and exit our rooms, we entered the hotel lounge or bar, walked through the restrooms, through a short alleyway, then into our mud room. When the lounge was closed, we had to enter our room through the bar. The bar patrons smoke in the alleyway, right outside the bathroom window. It was incredibly loud even with the bathroom door closed and our travel fans on. They provided earplugs which was kind, and we used them, but I finally had to turn my white noise machine on Saturday around midnight. We chose Lochindaal as it was in our price range for Islay but next time we would spend more to stay somewhere central and quieter on the island.
In order according to the headings for the ratings....Staff.... extremely friendly and welcoming. Warm and inviting, making jokes and reassuring us about queries we had made. For anyone that has never visited the Islands....people are friendly just accept it.Facilities.... We have literally nothing to complain about. I was going mad trying to figure out what the fragrance was in the foyer to the Ardbeg room and I discovered it before checking out. Sandalwood and leather. Clean.... impressively clean. Shower and bath for whatever you feel like. Comfortable....so comfortable we slept in each morning. We had every Intention of getting up early but couldn't.Value....some may dither about the price but I was here to celebrate my dad's 70th father and son style. You cannot put a price on those memories in such a location. Suffice to say I was happy to pay the price I paid. I will pay that again. Well worth it.Location....what can I say that's bad about Islay. Midges. That's my only observation. Thank you Lochindaal see you again sometime.
The midges.
Family room and location away from busier towns.
Room was above pub so a bit noisy in evening. Management provides sleep kit with mask and ear plugs
Beautiful location, lovely local character, good quality accomodations. Food at the hotel and affiliated restaurant is good
As a smaller hotel, things don't always happen right on schedule, and a little oversight here or there can happen since it doesn't run with the clockwork and large staff of a bigger place. But, the staff are great and will take great care of you.
The people who ran the hotel treated us like family. They went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable. The room was comfortable and up to modern standards.
Stairs. Like any older hotel in Europe, it's all stairs. For a person like myself who has bad knees, it was not fun.
The staff is very courteous and helpful .
Rooms are not at all good. Very bad layout with no space available. Minimalist furniture yet no place to keep anything.
Good rooms, very friendly and efficient staff, friendly owner , flexible.
Food menu in the bar could have been better. We had three rooms. Bruichladdich and ardnahoe on the first floor and bowmore on the ground. The heating in bowmore was not good enough.
Cozy wee hotel, laid back & staff helpful & friendly .Good breakfast & comfortable bed.
Room & bathroom were freezing on arrival at 21.00Room heated up once heater put on but bathroom cold till morning.Would have expected staff to have put heating on so room was warm for arrival.
Everything was superb and an excellent value. The room has all the facilities of a top-notch bed and breakfast, staff (the MacLellans, all wonderful) was super attentive and a joy to talk to. The heated floor in the bathroom felt like a game-changer. This property is one of a few where we'd be compelled to return to the location just to stay here. Truly rates as a 15 (at least) on a 10-scale.
We would like to have stayed longer. We'll definitely come back.
Family owned and run, the Lochindaal was super friendly with very comfortable accommodation and great food. Our spacious, modernised room in this charming 200-year-old building was located above the main bar, and some sound came through. But host Ian took care of it with all good humour. Hopefully we’ll visit Islay again. If we do, Lochindaal will definitely be our accommodation of choice.
All good!
Friendly staff. Good breakfasts. Nice room with good shower. Good location for us.
A little expensive given we were out of season but then Islay accommodation is generally very expensive.
Nice room, and comfortable. Near the bar and the breakfast
All is too dense
