About

Thyme is nestled in the rolling Cotswolds hills creating a home away from home: a place to slow down, take Thyme and reconnect with nature. The estate is connected by winding gravel pathways where you'll find 17th century houses and cottages with meticulously-restored agricultural barns, all enveloped in a pristine 150-acre estate. Guests can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner in their Ox Barn restaurant, and The Swan, their village pub, is open from Wednesday through to Sunday. Refreshments are available in their Baa, an elegant and cozy space where guests can enjoy a coffee and light lunch during the day or a botanical cocktail in the evening. Free private parking and free Wi-Fi are available at the property. Thyme's botanically inspired bedrooms are dispersed across houses and cottages, forming a peaceful hamlet environment with gravel pathways to lead you through the gardens. Each room comes with a coffee machine and welcome goodies for guests to enjoy during their stay. A private bathroom with toiletries from their sister brand, Bertioli, is provided in every room, and a bath or shower is also provided. Guests have access to the hotel's communal spaces, including their exhibition space, the Tithe Barn, the Baa Bar, and the Orchid House, the poolhouse which is open seasonally during the summer months when the outdoor pool is open for guests. Garden and History Tours are available at the property, please check their Calendar of Happenings to see when the tours are scheduled to take place. The Cookery School at Thyme offers both private classes alongside a scheduled program which is part of their Calendar of Happenings. Thyme's spa, the Meadow Spa, is an beautiful haven of peace and tranquility, nurturing beauty from within. They offer a range of rejuvenating treatments in the Meadow Cottage and the Botanical Bothy: a space designed in conjunction with their Bertioli breathing and bathing collection. Located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty where the Cotswold hills rise up from the Thames. Thyme is surrounded by beautiful and historic English countryside, and an array of enchanting places to visit and things to do; from a game of tennis on their court, bicycles to borrow for a ramble around their estate, or croquet on the Farmhouse lawn, there are many wonderful ways to enjoy your time. Bike routes and walking maps are available at the hotel Reception desk. Cheltenham is 26 mi from Thyme, while Stow-on-the-Wold is 17 mi away. Bristol Airport is 65 mi from the property, and Charlbury railway station is 16 mi away. The estate is also easily reached from London, via train from London Paddington arriving into Charlbury or Swindon station, or by taxi. The hotel are more than happy to assist with transfer requests, please contact the team as far in advance as possible to make travel arrangements.

    Pros +

    • Beautiful location, fabulous food, wonderful decor and comfortable rooms. Pretty much perfect all round.
    • Beautiful big property to walk around and enjoy the countryside
    • Beautiful property, well kept, clean and very picturesque. We stayed for our Christmas birthdays and the staff made it an incredible unforgettable stay. From the reception staff, to the cocktail barman, the restaurant waitresses were so attentive. We felt like celebrities. Thank you all, we will be returning.

    Cons -

    • Nothing!
    • For the price of the rooms the fact that some rooms only have beds which are 135cm is quite crazy. Also they do not explain in advance ahead of the booking that the pool and spa are closed for the winter. At check out, we had included on the bill a tip for the hotel staff (such us cleaners etc) as it was specifically included in the bill, you have to proactively remove if you don’t wan to pay for it. This basically feels like they are pushing you to pay for this. This tip by the way is aside from the bar and restaurant tips already provided. I am not sure why you feel this is America now? I thought this was so rude that just because of this I would not come back
    • When we checked in we were taken to our room which was Pear Tree Cottage, it was a stunning cottage but not what we expected as we had booked a junior suite. This was lovely but a little out of the way as was out of the way and you had to cross the road to get to the accommodation. We spoke to reception and they kindly changed us to a room nearer the hotel which was much appreciated. We can't fault any other aspect of our stay.

The hotel is beautiful and in beautiful surroundings, On check in the staff showed us round the property and explained where everything was. We had drinks in Baa Baa, ate breakfast in the Ox Barn and ate dinner at the Swan. All excellent.

This is an exceptional hotel. It is a series of beautifully restored cotswold stone buildings that form a stunning, luxurious hotel within glorious gardens. The rooms are extremely comfortable and well equipped and the decor is pretty and stylish. We were given a room on the ground floor as we realised my husband could not manage the stairs to the bathroom in our first room and everything was done with no fuss. All the common rooms are stunning, you would not want to leave them! Fabulous Baa Bar.What truly made this trip though was the staff. Not only professional and very friendly, but enormously helpful and kind. Nothing was too much bother - Jasmine on Reception even offered to drive us to our dinner date in her own car!I would recommend Thyme unreservedly

Slightly larger teacups would be nice!

The grounds are beautiful. Most of the staff were very friendly. Food in the restaurant was good.

We paid around £700 per night during one of the hottest weeks of the year. For that kind rate you expect an exceptional room with AC. Our room did not have AC and was uncomfortably hot with nothing but a couple of fans blowing hot air around. All other 5 star hotels in the area at that price point have AC. For £700 per night you also expect a room to be impeccably appointed and maintained; it should feel like you are the first to stay in it. Again here Tyme did not deliver. The bathroom was very disappointing and poorly maintained. The mattress not up to standard and the sofa uncomfortable. The staff by the pool were often rude and constantly informed us that if we left for a second then we would have to take our things with us. Despite the fact that we had a service animal with us our dog was not initially welcome at the pool or in the pool house. We could hardly leave him in our room which was 30 degrees plus. We were asked to leave the pool by 2pm on the day of check out to make way for new guests. All in all some of the staff made us feel unwelcome and uncomfortable. I would not recommend the property to others.

The breakfast and dinner were brilliant with our requirements catered for with thought and exceptional talent. We couldn't have asked for a healthier meal with the chef utilising their extensive on site kitchen garden. The grounds are outstanding and interiors are stunning with an attention to detail that I don't think I have seen anywhere else in the UK. I would recommend as one of the best wedding venues in the UK and for anyone wanting to truly relax and wind down from a hectic life this is one of those rare hotels where you can truly switch off and find peace whether it be wandering round the extensive grounds or relaxing in the spa.

The only minor criticism would be the lack of control of underfloor heating in the ensuite in very hot weather. This was not controllable and only really a problem I would guess when high temperature outside as at any other time of the year it would be absolutely fine.

    Spectacularly beautiful. Great restaurant.

The cute pub in town is only open Fri to Sun so the Thyme restaurant is the only option. Property is gorgeous but quite remote.

Beautiful surrounds awesome interiors. Breakfast was incredible and my favourite service. Staff carrying luggage incredible up all the flights of stairs ! The kitchen garden and vegetable garden were incredible !!!

Didn’t even know there was a pool until last morning - no tour etc Hard to find a drink really had to search for staff.

Location was stunning. Breakfast very good. Efficient staff.

Do like to help myself to top notch presentation of fruit etc. Our room was too small, we are travelling for 3 months, could not fit our suitcases in the room.

Insane grounds. Absolutely stunning view all sustainable items in the hotel. Beautiful rooms.

    9RogerPosted on: 3-26-2025

The restaurant service and food was first class, evening meal and breakfast. Bar and lounges were very comfortable and the staff vert attentive. The rooms were very well appointed.

When we arrived there was no one at the car park attendant to help with our bags. We both have disabilities despite speaking to the receptionist for direction no one was available to assist us and we had to drag our bags a long distance over a pebble drive. The heating was off in our room, the TV was disconnected, and the shower hot water was not working.

Very posh n civilized. Massage was wonderful. Have to book in advance. Staff was very attentive.

    7DanielPosted on: 3-7-2025

Great setting, very relaxing, good size room with nice view.

Room had strong damp smell and bedside table lamps didn’t work. Hidden service charges at the end of the stay. Breakfast was only ok, hard toast and burnt bacon unfortunately

Beautifully and thoughtfully designed properties, attentive staff, excellent food at the Ox Barn, lovely setting

No free spa facilities (ie pool or sauna), teas in the room we not replenished

Thyme was honestly so lovely. Been wanting to visit for a while and it was well worth the wait. Pretty sure they upgraded our room without telling us. We were also gifted an unexpected bottle of champagne on arrival. The staff we're absolutely charming throughout the weekend. Ox Barn was gorgeous. The Swan roast was dreamy. Even the drive in was an occasion. We ending the stay with fabiulous treatments at the Meadow Spa. Thank you so much for looking after us. Can't wait to come back.

The common areas & Oak barn were elegant & stylish. The food in the Oak barn was exceptional for both breakfast and dinner. Totally fabulous particularly the venison.

We stayed 3 nights in winter. We were in the room " Love in the Mist."Maybe the hotel is better for spring / summer? The interior was not conducive to cosiness. In fact, we had to ask the staff to over ride the air conditioning as we were cold. That worked for awhile but reverted to cold on our last day. A little disappointed in the room interior given the common areas are very stylish.
