About

The Black Lion Hotel is located in the center of the historic town of Richmond. The converted family-run Georgian coach house offers private parking, free WiFi, a restaurant and bar. Rooms at the Black Lion Hotel Richmond North Yorkshire have a private or private bathroom, tea and coffee making facilities, and a TV. Hairdryers and irons are available on request. Featuring open log fires in the bar area, where cask ales and wine can be purchased. The Black Lion serves traditional cuisine made with fresh local ingredients. Due to the age of the building, The Black Lion is full of character and is characteristic of an old coaching inn with lots of old world charm and several flights of stairs. Located at the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Richmond hosts an array of Georgian architecture, monuments and abbeys. The Black Lion is located next to the Georgian Theater and within a 2-minute walk of the Green Howards Regimental Museum.

    Pros +

    • Room very comfy , staff...
    • Busy pub and food very acceptable.
    • Everything was great about the Black Lion. The location is so convenient for the town square and for exploring the surrounding area. Free parking is a bonus! Staff very welcoming and friendly. Breakfast very good and a good selection too.

    Cons -

    • Limited parking , I couldn’t get parked on the Saturday , heating went off on Friday evening 9pm ish ?But Saturday night it seemed it was on all night ?.
    • We booked bed and breakfast. The car park was full. We therefore parked on the square but needed a parking disc.It took me about 10 minutes to get one from a shop. A ticket was left on my windscreen and a fine of £50 reduced to £25 if paid within 14 days. I spotted the officer who claimed he only allowed 5 minutes for people to get a parking disc. I have appealed to the North Yorkshire Council and awaiting the result. The hotel could have warned us about the disc and fines.Upon finding the hotel, they had no parking disc.
    • Everything we expected from the room, although probably could do with brighter lighting. The only other problem was that there was a lot of noise from the room above, like slamming shut doors and heavy footsteps. It didn't disturb us too much, just annoying!

Great central location with free parking, homely and cosy, well stocked bar. Good value bar meals. Lovely, helpful staff. We mentioned on our way out for a walk that our radiators didn’t seem to be working in our room and when we returned a short while later this issue was resolved. We were also assured that if they couldn’t fix the issue with the radiators, they would supply us with heaters (these weren’t needed). Our bedroom had nice decor and bedding was clean. A nice range of tea/coffee/biscuits were provided. There was adequate storage and hanging space. Lovely dining room for breakfast and a good range of breakfast options. We love that the hotel is dog friendly

While our bedroom appeared clean, the en-suite would have benefitted from a deeper clean. The toilet, sink and shower tray had obviously been cleaned however the sealant in the shower was mouldy, around the perimeter of the shower tray had a buildup of dirt. There were cobwebs on the ceiling and around the edging of the en-suite floor looked unclean.

The location. Free parking and the bar.

We have stayed before last Summer. Was ok but needed a tidy. Booked the same room, 7, but on arrival saw a repair in the ceiling. Looked grubby but didn’t affect us unduly. Had a good jolly around Richmond which is great for food and drink. Had food at the hotel then headed for the room. The roof joist was leaking in next to the bed. Gave us a twin room which was too hot. The windows wouldn’t close and the rooms and the bathrooms were shoddy. Decided enough was enough. Booked Harrogate and checked out. To be fare to the manager got a full refund. Also found out a new boiler system was effecting the pipework and it was being refurbed starting the 16th. Too late for us.

Lovely hotel with parking, great warm room with comfy bed, large bath and lots of hot water, and coffe/tea making facilities.Bar food when we arrived was lovely and reasonably priced, with a lunchtime offer of a drink included with meal. All staff were very friendly. Good selection of cold breakfast items, juice, tea and coffee. Would recommend staying here. I understand it is to be refurbished this month. Great location for all that Richmond has to offer, even a lovely cinema.

The English breakfast - streaky bacon undercooked and rest of the breakfast deep fried and over cooked.

We couldn’t adjust the heating (Radiator) room was very hot so had to sleep with the windows open so very noisy

    9KevPosted on: 2-4-2026

The food was excellent, the rooms were in need of modernisation but the staff told us this was starting in February, the bed was comfortable and the staff very friendly.

The room we had looked out into a very small backyard and we had scaffolding at the window

The location is ideal. Car parking available on site. Pub lovely and cosy. Bed very comfortable and room very clean. Nice and warm accommodation and good breakfast

Old world charm, with a nice atmosphere, central location, right in the town centre with parking on site. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The food menu was varied and a little different, we had an evening meal which was served hot and was tasty, there was a little mix up with our order but the staff were apologetic and rectified this, offering a free drink to compensate.

There was an issue with the hot water, we had none the first night but the staff called in an engineer and things were fixed by the following morning.

    8JonathanPosted on: 1-25-2026

All the staff were very helpful, the food in the evening was lovely and breakfast (veggie) was exceptional. I took my two small dogs and the hotel were delighted to see them too.

The hot water broke but they called out a plumber and got it fixed by morning. These things happen. Parking was a little tight but I have a quite big car.

    7HarryPosted on: 1-25-2026

Friendly staff. Comfortable beds. £30 refund given once issue with no hot water was raised.

No hot water upon arrival, was sorted by the next day.

    8KatiePosted on: 1-25-2026

It’s a cosy pub downstairs with rooms upstairs- friendly and perfect for solo travellers.

The private bathroom was opposite the bedroom which meant I had to lock/unlock doors and run between the two, which wasn’t clear from the booking information.

    7DebbiePosted on: 1-19-2026

    Great location, nice bedroom

Bathroom not clean, bed and pillows uncomfortable

    5GemmaPosted on: 1-19-2026

The breakfast was nice, location was perfect and staff were friendly and accommodating.

There was damp and mould in the shower and the window didn’t close so it was cold and noisy outside through the night from some sort of extractor fan. There was paint chipped on the walls and the radiator was half hanging off.

    8AlisonPosted on: 1-18-2026

Lovely hotel, great location in the center of Richmond and food at the pub was amazing. Would definitely return.
