    • Excellent location and facilities. The staff were lovely and very helpful when I needed them. We ate in the restaurant and the food was excellent. Great breakfast as well .

    Cons -

    • The bed was uncomfotable for me. There were steps up to the bathroom which my husband didn't like.
    • Our room was perfect. ( It wasn't a personal choice but was allocated by the Hotel and we didn't know until we got there what our room would be like. )However we've been told that we can only book a specific room number by putting a request in the notes at the time of booking and that this may not result in our getting that room. I don't see a problem in it being confirmed by phone before we book(at the same time). The last time we used the request facility we were disappointed.
    • Residents access door to bedrooms was very temperamental but staff always happy to assist. At the time of our visit there was a very limited choice of beers in the bar.

Everything was as expected, staff were friendly, the room was warm and quirky, uneven floor etc. but have stayed here before and expected this.

All staff were professional and friendly - nothing too much trouble. Location excellent. Room spacious, clean and well appointed.Breakfast was plentiful with good selection but prefer hot breakfast to be cooked to order and not 'buffet' style.

Residents access door to bedrooms was very temperamental but staff always happy to assist. At the time of our visit there was a very limited choice of beers in the bar.

    Good location , good breakfast

Noisy at night from other guests

Nice location in the centre of Buxton. Nice building with lots of character and interesting features. Room was comfortable as was the bed and the ability to take my dog was great. Complimentary tea and coffee in the room was nice.

Parking was via a permit that is valid from check-in for 24 hours, spaces near the hotel are limited and not just for hotel users. The room was incredibly hot at night and I think every floorboard in our room (including the bathroom) squeaked loudly. We had to have breakfast in a separate room because we had a dog, which meant a short walk to the dining room. Staff didn't seem to know why we were there initially but also appeared very flustered and rushed even though it wasn't overly busy. The buffet breakfast was lacking and we had to return several times to check if items had been replenished. The card machine wouldn't accept contactless payment when we checked in and out which was inconvenient and the £20 supplement for the dog was significant to say the least.

Cosy hotel with nice room and good facilities. Fantastic restaurant downstairs.

View from room was obscured by chimney.

    History and location excellent

The revolving front door was open too much, - allowing cold drafts into, the corridor. The older receptionist was quite vague about the parking passes. We are two 80 yr olds and because she didn’t take the trouble to get a pass for us the day we arrived, we were forced to get up at 8am the next day to sort things and collect one from the young receptionist. Meanwhile our car had no parking pass overnight.

Staff were amazing. Great location and excellent chef

Slow restaurant service New Years Eve

Generally lovely and well kept hotel, staff were lovely and breakfast was delicious!

One issue we had was the temperature of the hot water - too hot to the point that we couldn’t stand under the shower even when on the coldest setting!

Location is fantastic. And we like the history of the old hall.

Unfortunately no eggs were replenished when the ones out were finished so i and some guest didnt get any. Also in room 22 there were no drapes or curtains which I think would make a difference to the standard and feeling of the room if they were added.

How old it is. Lovely old lift didn’t always connect but not rickety when using. Evening reception was god. Scrambled eggs at breakfast were best In had eaten in any hotel I have stayed in. Comfortable bed. Christmas tree in lounge excellent

The staff were hit and miss. Missing and having to wait for ages. Not being able to get any change. Apparently they don’t keep money on the premises. That was according to receptionist who made the excuse of being new. Didn’t seem to know anythingNo desk/dressing table to put things on. Tired in places.

The location was great. Right in the centre of town but off the main road therefore unaffected by traffic. The food was great but the wine was expensive.

The radiator in our bathroom was cold. We reported it but nothing was done. Looked very old and irreparable. The hotel needs upgrading.

Locations and amazing building . Staff superb

But old fashioned but it works well

    9JudithPosted on: 12-24-2025

Breakfast a lot better being cooked individually. When we've stayed before it has been a buffet and some times things have been cold.

    7ThomasPosted on: 12-23-2025

A hotel with plenty of character and charm, from the paintings to the original features of a grade II listed building.Breakfast was good with a varied selection. Staff were friendly.

The room was very warm when we arrived and it was a bit too noisy outside to leave the window open, I looked a bit closer in the morning and I should have adjusted the radiator and it was set on the highest setting, I'm not sure why it was set so high. Rant almost over. The mattress was definitely past its best also, it was high up in the middle and slanting down the outside, I was thinking I'm going to end up on the floor at some stage in the night.

Location. Spacious room. Great breakfast. Security. Clean. Has kept its historical features.

Receptionist to far away from front of desk.
