Cons -
- The heating wasn’t great. Cold when we arrived. Staff managed to get heating on . No valves on radiator. The following night it was too hot and the poor night manager had to look all over the hotel for a valve. It was extremely hot. He finally found one. Wasn’t impressed at being locked out of our room on the last morning because it was past 10 o’clock. Not blaming staff who were lovely.
- This place is an absolute joke. Since it's advertised as a « palace hotel and spa » (they sneakily changed their name since then but when I booked that’s how they were called) in an iconic spa town famous for its thermal water I was expecting an at least decent spa experience and bought if for a weekend for my wife’s birthday. I’m not exaggerating when I’m saying that this is by far the worst spa I’ve ever been to (and I’ve done quite a few). The locker room is absolutely filthy, one wonders if it’s ever been cleaned at all, there are no keys on the lockers and the shower is icy cold. It immediately gives you a very cheap, dirty, uncomfortable vibe totally misaligned with the price the hotel charges and the way it’s advertised. The pool isn’t thermal (in a thermal town !!!) and cold. There’s one ridiculously small sauna that fits a maximum of three people (in a huge hotel with hundreds of rooms). I can’t speak of the steam room since it was out of order. I've been to public pools in small eastern European towns that were better than this so called "spa".The place also closed at 4pm on a Saturday, which is ridiculous, but it was so bad we left almost immediately anyway. The room itself felt very old and not super clean, and the window didn’t close properly which let the cold air get in (super ecological…). The whole place just has a very cheap, fake, run-down vibe. The icing on the cake is that we checked out an hour after checking in, highly disappointed by the facility, and they refused to refund us even though their advertising was completely misleading and even though we weren’t even in the room for an hour. Avoid this dishonest place at all cost and go to the Crescent instead, a bit pricier but much nicer and has a real spa. Totally worth the price difference.EDIT : regarding your answer, I did go to the reception and said I was disappointed and wanted a refund, you refused, and still haven't refunded me ever since.
- Payment for car park.Check in process.....checked in 3 times, offered an upgrade but room was not ready.Bed was not full double sizeRoom was noisy due to Aircon heating system outside of window, therefore could not open window.Breakfast was poor......ran out of mushrooms, orange juice was not good

The building was well maintained, location for our needs was excellent

A lovely older traditional hotel which we like, so expect squeaky floors :-) but all good.
Breakfast a little sparse with items on the menu missing
Beautiful decoration and facilities. Staff very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was hot and plentiful.
Food menu on saturday evening was a set menu with very little choice. Disappointed as had to eat out from the hotel.
Didnt have breakfast here so cant comment. romm was large, warm, clean and comfortable. Good hot powerful shower.Very helpful staff. location is central to everything in Buxton.
Nothing really. beware if you park on spaces adjacent to the main entrance. ther are large floodlights at low level which you cant see as they were not on, which bash your door and prevent you getting out.
The location the bar and restaurant facilities
The bedroom smelt like it had been smoked in also dog hairs on the carpet
First of all this is a beautiful ans historic hotel situated right in the heart of Buxton. We really enjoyed the general vibe of the hotel with lots of space, friendly staff and plenty of places to sit and relax.During the evening the piano music is a really nice touch and suits the environment perfectly. The wellbeing centre is very nice and and the room was a nice size with almost everything you'd want and expect.
The age of the hotel was an attraction for us, but one downside is the dated electrics which meant a very limited number (2) of usable modern plugs to charge phones etc, one of which was on the other side of the room from the bed.The hotel charges £5 per night gor parking which we weren't aware of.The restaurant menu is quite limited
Hotel sumptuous. Room modest. Good breakfast. Excellent value for money.
Room could have been nicer. Pictures etc.
Rooms lovely, staff amazing, Breakfast a little hectic but lovely food, coffee machine a little dodgy but soon sorted by the fab staff.
Breakfast was nice.
1. We were told upon arrival that we had to pay £5 for parking? In a hotel we're paying to stay at? What? 2. Pool and spa facilities shut at 4pm. Checkin was 3pm so no time to use the pool. 3. Partner needed a plug socket for sleep apnea device. Plug socket was out of date and didn't fit a 3 pin. Got given an extension cable - health and safety alert.
The size of the superior room was good.
I don’t even know where to start with this one, this truly is a very poor quality of hotel, from the moment of arrival I was unpleasantly surprised! It felt a bit like arriving at a bad caravan site in Skegness. You must pay to park. We upgraded to a superior room and it was so incredibly dated! And I don’t mean in a nice, old worldly charming way. There were holes in the bathroom wall, the floor boards were uneven so that all of the mismatched furniture was sat uneven across the floor, there was no flow! Nothing matched, seats stained, it just makes you feel depressed and low! we had thought we would use the spa on arrival however we were informed it closed at 4pm when online it states it doesn’t close until 8pm, never mind we thought we shall watch some television, incorrect, the WiFi needs to be connected to the hotel but the signal is so poor, it does not work! So, seen as my partner and I were away together, it made sense we would go ahead and do the only thing left for partners to do…. Then we hear a noise, the chain on our outer door rattling as if someone was trying to enter, perhaps a drunk person, we assumed. They were all down in the lobby falling off of furniture and staggering around earlier. Maybe they mis read the door number and they will go away, 5 minutes passed and then to our absolute shock, a member of staff enters the room, whilst my partner and I are completely naked!!! No knocking, just straight out enters the room! Bear in mind it was 11pm and we had chained the outer door! Que some shouting about who the room was booked too, as he thought there was no one in there! We get dressed and go downstairs to ask what the hell! Was it really staff? Because this individual had snapped the chain clean off the inside of our door by forcing entry! It was indeed staff! We spent the remainder of our stay with a chair shoved up against the internal door.
Location
Room lovely,1 complaint the mattress to hard so not a very good night's sleep
Lovely spacious room very clean. Easy check in and nice bar area. Great location lots within walking distance
Not enough plug sockets in bedroomThe pool area lockers weren’t locking in male changing rooms so husband had to meet me so I could store his belongings. Entrance to women’s changing facilities was a bit awkward.
Beautiful staircase friendly staff, unfortunately though I was in front of the lift our room so was noisy at times al night but otherwise great value for money a bath would have been nice rather than a shower
The headboard was terrible non existent but I had a cheaper room I guess, no dog bowls for dogs and you have to leave them in the rooms
Location
Dirty room !!! This hotel is very dated requires some major maintenance and upgrades for the prices that are being charged very disappointed
Great location. Public areas of the hotel were super impressive with grand features and architecture and beautifully appointed. Most staff were lovely, really helpful and friendly. Good breakfast. The room was big but very basic in decor and facilities. Our room was well heated despite the snow outside.
We paid for parking and then another guest blocked us in with their car by randomly parking outside a parking bay. Our concern was dismissed by one member of staff who flatly refused to help. When you pay to park you input your car reg to the system- the hotel can match the car to the room number so it should have been a simple issue to resolve. When we returned to the hotel after dinner and 6 hours after the initial 2 complaints, the car was still there. We complained to a third staff member and they resolved the situation by getting the car moved immediately. As the moved car was still in the same spot the next morning when we left we would have been delayed in leaving the hotel. I did not like the feeling of being trapped in the car park. If we'd needed to use the car or leave for any reason this would not have been possible. The room was very basic and didn't have a plug socket next to the bed. First world problem I know but I had to charge my phone on the other side of the room. As a night time scroller this was annoying. The bed was too firm and felt like a cheap uncomfortable mattress so I didnt sleep well. The issues we had could be easily resolved, but really impacted my enjoyment of our stay. Overall the hotel did the most important things well.
The staff treated the kids like adults, not children. They had the option of choosing from the children's menu or the adult's menu with the set course dinner. We received free swimming passes and one room was upgraded to a suite. It was amazing. We parked for a bit longer for free after check out too. Exactly what we all wanted for a three generation family stay together.
The stairs to the pool were quite dangerous for a 76 year old. Our locker in the ladies changing room was hard to open and my husbands locker had no key. Apparently none had them. There was blood on the spare pillow stored in the wardrobe. It was about 5p in size in the middle.
Staff friendly, ready to please, always cleaning and busy. Accommodation comfortable, warm, ideally located within 2 mins of town centre. Oppulent decor, pleasant to sit in bar, reception or dining area on a cold winter evening.
