About
The Golden Lion Hotel has welcomed guests, including royalty, for more than 200 years. The Scottish poet Robert Burns wrote a poem on a hotel window frame, a plaque commemorating this is located on the hotel’s front. Located in Stirling city center, it has free parking, a traditional bar and a restaurant serving Scottish beef and lamb. The family-owned Golden Lion offers modern rooms, each with a flat-screen TV with satellite channels, tea and coffee and ironing facilities. Each bathroom has a hairdryer, bath and shower. There are shops, bars and cafes on the hotel doorstep, and the magnificent Stirling Castle is just 0.6 miles away. The William Wallace Monument is less than 10-minutes drive from the Golden Lion. The Cronies Bar has light bar meals, and stocks a range of malt whiskeys. The adjacent Cronies Restaurant, serving afternoon teas daily, also offers a tasty breakfast and a varied, creative menu, including locally caught seafood. Stirling’s main bus and rail stations are within 5 minutes’ walking distance.

Pros +
- Location. Walk to the Castle and Church. We were able to walk to every place we ate and morning coffee. Staff, was very friendly and focused on our visit.
- Central location for shops food and drink friendly staff and bar and restaurant area was beautiful
- Location and breakfast good.
Cons -
- Key lock door. The heated towel rack made our room incredibly warm. Could find a way to turn it off. Needs to be updated. Glad they had parking downtown but was difficult to find.
- Pillows were so thin and flat felt like basically just lying on the mattress Difficult to regulate the temperature of the shower if you wanted it a bit warmer would end up roasting hot A regular bar person on duty as at times people had to wait a while to be served this lead to some people leaving as fed up waiting
- Room was very run down, paper peeling off walls, lampshades falling apart, bad / deep scuffs on walls, long standing webs, stains and splashes on walls. Poor quality / worn pillows and cushions, duvet barely covered double bed. We understand it’s under new owner and will take time but cost of stay doesn’t reflect state of hotel. Owner having financial loss conversations with staff in main reception area while we sat having quiet drink away from bar on Saturday night. I’m sure there’s a private office that could be used. We paid for breakfast when booking but restaurant staff did not have it recorded on list, embarrassing. At least breakfast was good. Generally the whole hotel is in poor state of repair, cracked and broken windows. We were only away for one night respite but definitely would not have stayed if booked for longer. Very disappointed. We nearly left but decided to make most of our one night. No way to contact reception from room (no phone).

The room was spacious, warm. Hotels restaurant food was amazing and good value. Staff were friendly and polite
It was very central
We have been coming for on and off for over 40 yrs as this is where my husband proposed toMe but it really needs work done to update the rooms . We came for our anniversary but were very disappointed. It seems that money has gone into the bar and restaurant but not the bedrooms and corridors. When we left yesterday morning the lift was filthy with kebab sauce sprayed everywhere. We will not be coming back as there are nicer hotels in Stirling
Great location, lovely meal in the restaurant, friendly staff, pianist playing during the meal was fantastic, enjoyed drinks in the bar
No issues
Location was great, piano playerIn the bar was really good. Good choice of whiskey.
Prices in the bar weren’t competitive with local area. Tired decor throughout hotel. The worst view I’ve ever had from a hotel room
Worst stay ever!!
Tiny box room which was filthy. The handles had broken off the drawers. Carpet was patched together with tape. No phone in the room to contact reception meaning you had to walk 9 flights of stairs to speak to a receptionist. Receptionist was extremely rude and unhelpful when I requested a change of room.
Loved the historical aspects of the hotel. Full of character.
The shower was a bit small for my husband but not too much of a problem.
Room was comfortable and a good bath.Very good evening meal in restaurant.
This is a magnificent heritage building. Built in 1786 and the owner does a fantastic job keeping it well maintained. It is set in a great convenient postion as well.
Not much at all really. Maybe the glassware in the bar and restaurant could use some attention?
Location
The mattress was total joke never slept a wink , blocked sink curtains off the rails
Central location ,close to railway and bus station.
No slip mats for Bath and lack of handrails in bath.
Room was warm, clean and comfortable. Hotel had a friendly atmosphere throughout.
Car park entrance not all that obvious until you have passed it and have to go all the way around the one-way system again. Good job Reception had maps available.
Staff was lovely to deal with. Facilities room was great. Our meal was well brought out quickly and tidied up at every point also.
Room was a bit tacky, although clean- the bath constantly dripped, the towel rail was peeling and clearly very old which let the bathroom down, behind the door on the bath panel was black and damp. Bedroom itself was lovely and clean, bed was comfortable. We had booked a twin room and it was made up as a double with no extra bedding- we made do but could have caused others an issue. Parking was an issue, we didnt know there was a carpark and ended up having to pay and display in a public carpark up the road.
The location
The dirty water in the bedroom, the sink water and the shower water were both brown, there were cobwebs and dust galore in the breakfast room
Nice and clean, central location, free carparking
Very small double bed
Location was great, staff were very helpful
Rooms were pretty rundown and freezing cold,,and disabled access was very difficult
This wasn't my first visit nor will it be my last. This hotel is frequently full and I was lucky to get in. £60 a night? That is an absolute steal. The room was spotless, the bed was so comfortable and a proper easy to use shower was so welcoming.
I could only think of one thing, I'm tall and that ceiling was so low!
Location and cleanliness
My daughter left her own pillow that she took and when we called it took 3 days for someone to check the room and we were informed that it was not found in the room ,poor service when only asking to check a room for a pillow
