    Pros +

    • Comfy pub, great location right in the middle of the high street, very busy Saturday (Rugby 6 Nations) couldn't find a seat when we came down for a drink before our meal but staff were very approachable and let us sit in the restaurant. That said, it did empty out after the rugby (as you would expect) and then there were plenty of seats. As noted, we did have a meal (Valentines night) which was nice, basically good pub food done well and not over priced.Good breakfast, small continental buffet which seems to be the norm and a set menu but lots of choice. Only bread option was sourdough (why is it always sourdough?) but apart from that good ingredients and a nice quiet atmosphere.Staff were very helpful when you could get their attention.Parking included but be aware, you do have to pass though a very narrow passage way on the way to the carpark, we didn't have any trouble but noticed a few of the larger cars pulling their wing mirrors in before driving down.
    • Location was good right in town, check in staff nice and helpful. parking on site for free
    • Do not stay until health...

    Cons -

    • Large pub a little tired on the outside, we found our way to the check in area but then stood for some time waiting to be checked in whilst staff walked past. Ended up getting someone's attention and pointing out that we were waiting to be checked in before they acknowledge us and then went off to find the manger.
    • Room decor tired with marks on the walls, and door looked damaged. Bed was very soft and uncomfortable, also had to drink elsewhere as they had run out of Guiness
    • We stayed for an early appointment for my son. However, all doors were locked and we could not get out. Two other guests could not open the door plus one member of staff who confirmed this was a regular issue. My son missed his appointment because of this and it is obvious fire safety risk. However, when reporting the issues, the manager was totally dismissive and saying the lock was a standard door lock and he did not have problems opening it.He refused to recognise the problem even when I used a broken record to say 5 people including a member of staff could not open the door.I have no confidence that the issue will be rectified. Hence, the very bad review as I would not stay in this hotel again until this both Health and Safety and practical issue is resolved. In addition, there was no plug for the bath with a beam making having a shower difficult. I did want a bath!Generally, although quaint old place with expected character forming features, which I would normally love, it is overdue for some refurbishment.

Location in the middle of Tenterden High Street was good - just a short stroll to shops, cafes and restaurants. Also, just a 20 min drive to Rye for a day of sight-seeing. Free parking for guests. Rooms were quite large, comfortable and clean. Nice selection of teas and coffee in the room. Breakfast selection and portions were really good. Staff was super friendly and accommodating. Pub had a lovely ambiance.

A bit noisy at night. Unfortunately it was a weekend of private parties and a live band performance so it was quite noisy at night - suppose you can expect that from a pub accommodation though. Music did stop at 11pm as advertised.

Location, staff, traditional pub atmosphere, easy parking

    9KarenPosted on: 1-13-2026

    Free parking, access to town

Found the rooms cold. The radiators did not work during the first 3 nights we stayed.

    9LesleyPosted on: 1-4-2026

Great location in the town centre with parking beautiful building room was lovely clean and very comfortable breakfast was great

    8DavidPosted on: 12-26-2025

Convenient for us. Good sized, quiet room which is just what we wanted.

Room was very hot but switching off the radiators and opening the window fixed that. Good tea and coffee facilities but I do prefer decent sized mug

The location was perfect, the staff were very helpful and friendly, the room was great, super band playing, and the Christmas decorations really added the Christmas feeling.

The outside is very tired looking, but thankfully, the inside is great. The entrance to the car park is very narrow.

We stay at the White Lion when visiting family and friends in Tenterden. Bev and Hannah, really looked after us.

    7StuartPosted on: 12-14-2025

    Christmas atmosphere. Good staff

No heating in room when I arrived it did come on in the morning.Fan heater in room overcame that.Broken / loose toilet seat and towel radiator cap was dislodged showing bare cables. (I pushed it back but it needs attention.

The position was fantastic, we left the car in the carpark and walked everywhere. Staff helpful and friendly. Room warm and cosy lots of hot water.

Uable to read a book due to poor lighting.

    Location and the staff

Needed more care and attention in the bedroom.

    9AlanPosted on: 12-4-2025

The room (Bodiam) was excellent, lovely and spacious. Thank you for putting us in this room as it was our wedding anniversary. Staff were lovely and friendly too.

Staff that were there worked very hard and were very friendly. Sometimes felt like they were a little short staffed, had to wait to check in as no one around but not a massive problem.

    8DebraPosted on: 12-3-2025

the room was well decorated, individual and clean

bathroom was a bit jaded, , but big

    9Dlb21aPosted on: 12-2-2025

We had a good lovely evening meal and breakfast. The room was also good. The only problem was the floow was uneven but that cannot be helped in an old building. Overall we enjoyed our stay.

    7AlisonPosted on: 12-2-2025

Very nice character property in the heart of Tenterden. Staff were very welcoming and friendly and food and service was exceptional. Our room was a good size and had plenty of treats available (if required) for an extra price.

The bed in our room was very hard and felt uncomfortable. The only water included in the room price was from the bathroom tap. The bottles of water were available to pay for if required, but I think these should have been included in the room price.

    6ChrisPosted on: 12-1-2025

    dinner was good

room was tired and coldwe had to turn the heating upthen it was too hot so a bad nights sleep

    5KeithPosted on: 11-27-2025

Great location, good pub atmosphere downstairs. Nespresso machine in room. Car parking to rear convenient.

Upstairs the decor is tired and some repairs needed. Electric towel rail in Appledore bathroom was almost coming off the wall. ‘Full English’ was average.
