Cons -
- The staff were not very attentive. We waited in the bar area for a long time before anyone came to take our order on the first occasion. On our second visit, we eventually had to go to the bar ourselves to order drinks.Breakfast was acceptable, however the waiter’s uniform was noticeably soiled, which is a detail but it matters. We also enquired about a spa treatment. After calling, we were told someone would get back to us, but no one ever did. Overall, it felt as though the hotel receives enough business that customer service is not a priority.
- No one ever answer the phone , called 6 times over period of week to book spa treatment.
- The bed was uncomfortable and the room warm. It was difficult to keep window open

Staff. And the food was really good
Room was very cold, and poorly looked after. And the location of the room felt I was in the loft. Spa would need some renovation and cleaning. There was some dirt at the bottom of the pool.
The hotel and spa are wonderful. My husband and I had a wonderful spa weekend at this hotel. The grounds are beautiful especially the Christmas decorations, the spa area: pool, jacuzzi, sauna is the best place to relax in Essex, we also visited the pub on site: the food was very tasty and good. We had a great time there and want to go back again
Historic English house, cozy and nicely decorated.
Historic English house, cozy and nicely decorated. The kitchen needs improvement. Breakfast is expensive for what they offer, the buffet is limited and of low quality, all pre-made products.
Everything we wanted the staff accomplished
We are a private couple, so the pool in the afternoon was too⅕ crowded to our liking but was happy the hours went out to 10 pm so we were very happy about that
Breakfast was good, meeting area was comfortable, sauna and steam where great.
UK traffic and road works but that's the hotels fault.
We liked the period building
The stay was disappointing. Staff could have a little more training. I went to the bar the first night to find everyone hanging around chatting and swearing. The breakfast was disappointing, not enough fruit on offer and only fat free yoghurt available. Would have been nice to be offered a pot of tea and more hot drinks with a more up to date menu to order from. Our room wasn’t tidied or towels replenished after the first night. I didn’t see a single manager throughout our stay. Staff at breakfast seemed confused and unsure what we ordered or when. Breakfast was average and small. The hotel seemed a little dated and our shower taps etc in the attic room was full of limescale and the bath jets smelt of sewage. The attic room the first night was very warm and we only had a poor working fan to cool down- I didn’t address this at the time.
The property looked lovely from the outside, beautiful old interior
Our room was the highest and furthest you could go with no lifts and no one asked if they would take our cases for us.
I have stayed here a couple of times, it is the only hotel close to Chelmsford that offers any wellbeing facilities, and I like to work out and have swim when staying away from home. Staff are always friendly and helpful, bed super comfy, rooms are clean, grounds are beautiful and well kept. I haven't actually used the spa when I have stayed as never had enough time so can't comment on that, but I always enjoy staying here.
It's not necessarily a criticism, I think perhaps it's more a matter of taste. I work in high end hospitality and fully aware I am spoilt and can be picky (because it's my job to be that way) but the bedrooms, and dinning room, feel just a little bit out dated. I think the venue has so much potential, just needs a little investment and modernising. It could do really well as there is no competition locally.
Has a decent pool and good food, also a lovely building
Great location. Caring staff and the food was second to none. The food was exes quiet. Best dining experience I have had in a while. Staff were excellent. Will defo be rebooking and recommending to friends. Keep up the good work and high standards.
Very little to say. The pool was busy but we found loungers ok.
Beautiful gardens . Good parking.Reception . Dinning room. Corridors well maintained. Large room lovely decor Breakfast was good and the service was excellent.
Room not replished with towels and pillows . Tea / coffee missing including tea spoons.Bed wasn’t made up completely.Bed lights not plugged in and we had to move bed headboard to find plugs .Bathroom wasn’t clean and smelt of dirty drains which I reported to housekeeper and receptionist . We just had to run hot water down shower / bath and flush toilet.Bathroom door handle was broken and door wouldn’t shut properly unless slammed. Window plantation blinds need a lot of maintenance and repair or replacement.Paint work had dirty black marks on skirting boards/ window frames/ doors and window ledges. For £300 a night it wasn’t up to standard which is a great shame as it has so much to like and staff were excellent.
The breakfast was ok, i had to get up and walk around to find some help even though the dining room was empty. Took almost 30 mins to get served. Then at a cost of £20 i thought the food was average at best.
There was a prom on during the evening, which is fine. I sat outside to eat my evening meal and listened to the music etc so i'm no stick in the mud. The issue however was that the party moved to the front of the hotel at 11 pm and remained very noisy until 1am. If you put a couple of hundred teenage girls in one place it's going to be noisy. But there was excessive shouting and screaming until very late as people were collected. For other guests staying for work, this isn't ideal as i couldn't sleep. Only other comment would be that for my evening meal i ordered a starter and a main - they both arrived at the same time meaning my main was cold by the time i got to it. Small thing but frustrating nonetheless.
Well constructed older building using solid materials
Lovely old hotel with a beautiful lounge areas to relax in. Lounge food is excellent.Lovely place to relax even if you don’t wish to use the swimming pool and spa
Beautiful building and good service
Bed moved and was quite hard, but the room was lovely. The outside area in the spa needed some love and attention, or even a sweep.
Nice hotel Good food and excellent service from lovely staff Pool area was nice (sauna was broke and too hot ) and the grounds are lovely
The food and room
Not enough towels in the room
