Pros +
- Location room bed
- A lovely hotel, comfortable room and wonderful dinner.
- Love the location and the bedroom sizes are generous.
Cons -
- The dining staff were pleasant and willing but perhaps not particularly well trained. But they got the job done
- Our junior suite took along time to heat up as it was cold.
- The only thing I would say that needs to be improved is the pillows on the beds as they’re very soft which can make them uncomfortable. If this is not possible perhaps providing spare pillows would help.

Breakfast staff (she was only there 4 weeks) she was clearly overwhelmed and v busy but also v friendly
Light bulbs in room 15 not working.
Beautiful room, the whole place is delightful. Lovely and clean and smells gorgeous! Food is delicious and a lovely selection of drinks. Even got a free beer in the room!
No biscits in the room!
The room was excellent, we brought our dog and it was perfect. The meals were delicious at both the dining room and the breakfast room. Service was also top notch.
nothing to add
Beautiful old building in great location. Warm welcome at reception and in the bar. Lovely clean comfortable room. Great shower. Comfy bed.
Breakfast was a bit chaotic.
Breakfast, ambience, helpful staff
Gorgeous old building. Great location. Room was comfortable and spotlessly clean. Breakfast was excellent. Friendly and helpful staff. Loads of parking spaces.
All good
Greyfriars is a wonderful boutique hotel located very close to the city’s main shopping streets, bars and restaurants. Our bedroom was luxurious. Breakfast was excellent. The staff are exceptionally friendly and welcoming. I’d recommend a stay!
Lovely hotel, large rooms and bathroom. Spotless clean and comfortable. A few minutes walk into centre. Staff friendly and helpful
I like everything about this hotel, the friendliness, the comfort, the classiness, the easy parking etc
Great location. Easy parking. Very spacious room. Very clean and well equipped. Good to have the heating/air conditioning option. The whole place has a lovely atmosphere and nothing is too much trouble for the cheerful and efficient staff. We had an evening meal and breakfast which were both excellent and again the atmosphere in the dining rooms enhanced the whole experience.
Several reviews mention the green light in the bedroom ceiling which is a bit irritating, but, being forewarned we were able to cope with it.Whilst it was good to have the flexibility of the heating/air conditioning system there did seem to be a constant background noise which we were aware of in the night.
Very comfortable cozy room. We really enjoyed the breakfast and it was great to have a breakfast in the room option. Staff were very professional.
There was an issue with the booking system accepting Irish postcodes for me and another from our group. My guess is that the system includes Irish postcodes as somehow being part of the UK. It isn't. This meant we had to pay the £50 damage deposit and wait for refunds.
Beautiful and spacious room with everything we needed, the giant tin baths were also a great extra. All the staff were attentive and very friendly, the hotel is in the perfect location for visiting the local spa and gardens. The food was exceptional and would definitely recommend to anybody staying in Colchester. Thank you to all the wonderful staff!
Centrally located , secure parking comfortable rooms decent food privacy and well trained staff.
Breakfast could have been a little zippier but no complaints
Nice beautiful place with good location in town
Breakfast could be improved the full english was not that great
We have stayed at Greyfriars many times over the years and it is always excellent. Therefore it was an easy choice for my extended family and I to have our late mother's wake in one of the function rooms and to book several rooms for family members to stay over.Hannah was brilliant in organising the rooms and also the room to hold the wake.Catering was excellent and we had great service from Blake who looked after us with drinks from the bar. Also a special mention to the reception staff who are always friendly and helpful and also the staff at breakfast ( sorry I didn't catch their names)
Lovely rooms , very comfortable and clean
Breakfast was not worth the money , didn’t really enjoy it at all !
First night there in standard room we discovered a green safety light above bed very bright and could not sleep, went to the reception next morning and asked if we could move to a room where it wouldn't be above the bed, said I was happy to pay if necessary. Reception incredibly helpful and we were given a complimentary upgrade to a signature suite which was absolutely stunning and resulted in a wonderful experience. When I had to extend our stay by one night (due to train issues), they only charged for the cost of a night in our original room. Absolutely wonderful customer service. Also very high quality room service.
This is NO fault of the staff but I can imagine the safety light above the bed would be an issue for many people, and I'm not sure how many rooms might have it situated above the bed (as it obviously has to be next to the door). I can imagine this would create a lot of difficulty for guests and staff if discovered once it comes to bedtime. I understand why these safety measures are in place, but I haven't encountered this particular issue in a hotel before and am conscious it would have been a real problem if there weren't any available rooms to move to.
