    Pros +

    • Cleanliness and nice staff
    • An old historic building transformed into a hotel, I loved the odd hallways and archways but it could be an issue if you are taller, free parking, very hot water in the shower
    • I loved the historic character of the hotel. The room and bathroom were comfortable, clean and a good size. The full English breakfast was good, and the portions were just right. Staff throughout the stay were friendly and helpful.

    Cons -

    • Room was noisy as was facing a main road, could not sleep well
    • Because it's an old building the floors are very squeaky and the room is a bit small, no lift
    • The only negative was that, coming to the hotel on foot, it was not immediately obvious how to get in. The entrance to the reception was from the car park side.

The staff, the atmosphere, the location, the breakfast

    More biscuits in the bedroom

    5RossPosted on: 10-8-2025

Ease of check was good, a full breakfast is extra but plenty of it and reasonable choice.

Breakfast although extra was worth it.

One night stay during travel. Good location and decent hotel! Friendly personnel. Good breakfast!

The property had good parking and was clean

It had a musty smell in our room

    7MEHDIPosted on: 8-25-2025

It was an old property, but charming

Poor room ventilation, dust in the room, very tough with late check out

    7PearcePosted on: 8-24-2025

Shower was great. Friendly staff. Parking convenient

A restaurant on site ? But we ordered a takeaway and the staff gave us plates and cutlery - that was good

    9LeePosted on: 8-22-2025

They no longer have the restaurant. Its breakfast only... which is a shame because the food was great.

    7JuliePosted on: 8-7-2025

    Great location, comfortable room

    No meals other than breakfast

The property is a delightful heritage mansion in the middle of Colchester. The creaking of wooden floors feels antique. The staff was helpful - checked us in late evening and combined my two back to back bookings with a single room assigned at check in (this request was denied initially over mail). So full marks to the receptionist who checked us in.The bar serves good, cold beers and the feeling matches that of sipping in an old tavern. The room was comfy though a little smallish. Kettle and tea, coffee supplies were adequate. Given the hot summers, they provided a table fan which was a welcome addition - we had to use it all the time we were in the room. The daily housekeeping was great. There is ample free parking on the property. The receptionist (different one) was very helpful in suggesting a breakfast place nearby.

I made two back to back bookings for 2 and 1 nights. I requested (through booking.com message) to allow us continuous stay so that we dont have to check out and check in for these two. This request was surprisingly denied with an offer to hold our luggage between check out of one room and checkin of the next. Thankfully the receptionist remedied that. Apart from this blooper which happened even before we reached there, everything was great.

Fascinating old building. The rooms are lovely and clean with very comfortable beds

Shame it no longer does evening meals, but the breakfast was good

    6CarolPosted on: 4-28-2025

Comfortable bed, clean bathroom, nice towels,

Location - unaware that hotel very close to railway line and at bottom of hill with town centre at the top.

    10LesleyPosted on: 4-27-2025

The room was quite large, bright and warm. Morning sunshine. Comfy bed. Bathroom had a good sized modern bath and a decent sized shower. Coffee making facilities, fresh milk given at reception. Friendly staff.

    7MickPosted on: 4-27-2025

Nice staff. Comfortable bar area. Cheap enough in comparison to other local places.

Breakfast wasn't brilliant. Mattress made us roll into the middle of the bed.

Fantastic location and historic hotel, full of history and quirks an old building like this has. The breakfast was superb and the bar at night was comfortable and with an atmosphere which suited the age and style of the hotel. Car park with lots of space.

The room though clean and comfortable, was in the new part of the building with a door which led on to the street, making it noisy and didn't have the feel the rest of the hotel gave you. Hotel reception staff though again nice, were not overly chatty or welcoming.

    9IzzyPosted on: 4-21-2025

The staff were friendly and courteous. The breakfast was good. Our room was very clean. It was good value for money.

    8TinaPosted on: 4-13-2025

Really enjoyed our night...but 5.30am on a Sunday morning very loud cleaning or moving of furniture from down stairs....
