Pros +
- THIS PLACE is amazing. It exceeded my expectations. I absolutely loved the location and opening your window on the 3rd story to see the sun rise! Breakfast was also really great. Very clean and FRIENDLY staff.
- The staff were all good and very friendly. The location is very good and the meal we had on Sunday was excellent - no wonder it was fully booked on Saturday.
- Great location, very central, easy access to the main attractions and shopping districts. The hotel had a very good pan-Asian restaurant on site.
Cons -
- I wasn't able to get very good wifi upstairs. It would connect, but the speed was too slow to do anything. Go downstairs in the lobby or courtyard for better wifi. No elevator, luggage must be carried up a staircase.
- My partner has a gluten and dairy intolerance and her breakfast options were limited
- The room looked out on a main road. Early morning trash pickup and an idling truck below the room's window woke me up. For the price, I can't complain. I'd request a room not facing the street if I were to stay there again.

Friendly staff nice rooms good quality food
The location and the room was clean
The shower doors were faulty causing the shower water to cover the bathroom floorThere were no USB charging points, which for 2025 we found unusualThe bar was closed when we returned at 22:15
all went well
Bit noisy with traffic on the street. boy racers unfortunately. Maybe a common problem as ear plugs were provided foc.
The relative location in the city is great. The staff are very kind and helpful. The reception area and restaurant are nicely done.
Do not stay here if you need a quiet night's sleep. The room that we had was facing North Hill, which is loud and busy all day and night. They were fully booked so could not move us. Also, the room is a pretty tight squeeze and the pillows are paper thin.
Great location for walking. Staff was friendly and helpful.
Needed to ask to get two of everything since we were sharing a room. Room was small but comfortable.
Location. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
The room had not been cleaned. The toilet wasn't cleaned and the desk top was dirty/sticky. Also, the street was very noisy all night long.
The staff.
The room was smaller than expected. The window hardly opened. The streetnoise [including alarm - not in the hotel but acress the street - went of several times] and parking facilities were adacious.
extremely friendly, helpful staff. Any queries dealt with with a smile. Bed very comfortable, shower very powerful. Bathroom much larger than the usual addition in the corner of a room. Excellent value for money. Really handy for seeing Colchester, particularly if you don't have a car.
Housekeeping could be improved. My room was barely touched the first day (I had put out Please Clean notice), and tea and biscuits were not replenished. However, the next day, after I had mentioned this to staff, room was sparkling and tea and biscuits ready for me!
Convenient location
Very very noisy. Constant floor board creaking, a fan or something that made a loud whirring sound frequently. They should supply ear plugs, yes it’s that bad in room 7
This is value for money. A very warm welcome, very helpful staff and whilst basic accommodation, very clean, quiet, central and well kept.
It's an old building so noise travels!
Room was very nice, thanks to the upgrade we received. Unfortunately other guests were very loud at 2 am. Also, it sounded like someone tried our door around midnight, this scared my wife who then couldn’t sleep.
Location - near the station, seemed clean, pleasant staff. Breakfast was tasty - but an extra.
There was a fly buzzing inside the toilet bowl, which was unpleasant; I would have liked two decent pillows instead of 1.5 thin ones; room was hot but window opened onto a busy street - so I had street noise all night, plus someone smoking just outside the window and there was no phone in the room so I couldn't (being in my pyjamas at this time) talk to reception about these things.
Great location right in the heart of Colchester. Room was basic but very clean and comfy, just what you need, with good facilities such as iron and board, and even ear plugs. Breakfast was absolutely delicious and just the right amount of everything.
Very minor thing but the shower water squirted in different directions. However this was one of the hottest and most powerful showers I’ve come across in a hotel so this outweighed the negative!
I cannot praise all the staff highly enough. I had a panic attack and stomach upset about getting to my meeting in the morning and the staff very kindly and efficiently organised a taxi, breakfast that I could eat and me so that in the end I arrived early! The bed was extremely comfortable and despite a back problem I slept soundly. The hotel is centrally located in the old part of the town and is an attractive building of character.
As an old building of character the hotel has some access problems. There was a large step up to the entrance, which I nearly tripped over. I think that this is a temporary arrangement while there is maintenance work going on. I was only staying one night, so didn't ask whether there was an alternative entrance. The staff helped me with my luggage. The retaurant is temporarily closed, but there are several restaurants nearby. The bedroom was a bit small, but quite adequate.
A large, quiet, and pleasant room. Very comfortable, large bed. Very nice breakfast. Happy to stay there again.
Great Staff and lovely bar/restaurant area. Great location in town.
Dirty plate had been left in the room on arrival. Noisy rooms walls/floors are like paper. On the Friday night a lot of noise from the rooms up stairs. On Saturday the bar was used for a private event, we were told is would end at 11pm, but went on with blasting music till after 1am.
Excellent breakfast. a short walk from the Mercury Theatre
Unfortunately parking in the unloading bay can only be done overnight on a Saturday, or you have to move the car very early in the morning
