Pros +
- The accomodation is in historic17th century Georgian coach house right in the centre of a bustling village with a well stocked butcher and a convenience store on the opposite side. Just thinking of all generations that previously stayed there gives one a comforting sense of belonging to a tribe of Eternal travellers tribe on a quest of perpetual exploration. The rooms named after English monarchs are lavishly appointed with canopied beds which are incredibly spacious to sleep in.We stayed in Henry VIII room. The house features some curiosities from a long time ago: a lavishly binded Bible in a glass case downstairs, a fine example of a medieval commode with carved facade wedged behind the bar, and to my particular delight, a medieval , probably French infantry helmet made of forged steel , riveted known as chape le fer and a horse man's axe the kind Robert the Bruce used to such a devastating effect when challenged by an English knight in an apocryphal duel aftermath the battle of Bannockburn. I have found quite a few pictorial representations of a similar axe used by knights on horse ( standing on their stirrups and using both of their hands to deliver a blow that can literally cleave through the helmet) an authentic piece even The Wallace collection could be proud to display. How it came in possession of a village pub an enigma I am not capable to comment on!Unfortunately the dining hall featuring modern replicac swords and pictures of knights was not open for dinner because of the low season we enjoyed traditional breakfast and very good it was too.Hopefully we will be back during High season for a leg of Welsh lamb we enjoyed when we visited earlier in 2021.
- Loved our overnight stay here, on check in was told that breakfast was included. We had a very nice evening meal and a full English breakfast and both meals were very good. Staff are exceptional, locals really friendly. Mattress was a little smaller than the frame but we found it comfortable and loved the soft pillows. More than enough toiletries and teas/coffees in the room. Absolutely incredible for the amount we paid, above and beyond what I expected. Wouldn’t hesitate to stay again.
- Comfortable quiet rooms
Cons -
- We were quite happy as it was. The staff was incredibly accommodating as we were the only guests!!!
- Booked for tradesmen who were working on my house, they reported although booking for breakfast there was no one there so they waited but no show. Second morning the cook arrived same time they had booked breakfast for. One had a full English which he stated was over cooked "could of resoled my work boots with the bacon". Other had cereal after going inside kitchen to find the cook "what I saw put me off, thought it would be safer to just have cereal". Both commented that the coffee was "extremely unpleasant".
- Just the mattress, so didn't sleep well could do with a new fitting (smaller than actual bed frame) deeper mattress that is memory foam or Orthopaedic with memory foam topper. I love the Room Mary 1,but really could do with a new mattress then would be perfect for good night sleep.

Staff were really friendly and helpful, room was very comfortable and quiet and the breakfast was a full English. Everything I need when on a cycling tour!
Great size Room second time now been in Mary 1. Spotless clean. Fresh bedding.Clean Towels. Complimentary shower gel and shampoo and coffee and tea condiments and biscuits.

Very cosy room, very welcoming. Nice old fashioned furniture as per age of the inn. Staff helpful and friendly
People need be aware that it's a really tight corner into the car park although there is on street parking.
The staff at The Red Lion....Kelsey, Merlin & Abbie were excellent, friendly and helpful. The accommodation was spot on for us. Clean, tidy, comfortable and warm. Great atmosphere and nice to meet and talk with locals. Food served was excellent...hope you're hungry as portions do not disappoint. Breakfast full English was dam good to !!!. Lovely place just 6 miles from the Red Kites Feeding station...a must visit!!!. Highly recommended The Red Lion Hotel. If you get chance to book...don't hesitate!!!
Having to leave so soon.
Room was very spacious, spotless, great value for money. Bedding clean and fresh. Tea,Coffee condiments all included. Shower gel,Shampoo and Towels all provided. Spacious shower.
Maybe would benefit with a thicker Duvet for Winter months and a mattress topper or firmer mattress. Other than that was perfect.
This is the second time I’ve stayed at the Red Lion. It is a lovely b&b and the rooms are beautiful and eery. Since the last time I visited two of the local pubs have shut which is a great shame but there are beautiful walks nearby and it is an easy drive from Cardiff.
Great location, friendly staff, great pricing. Alex was kind enough to sort out on the go breakfast for me as I was running out the door...really interesting decor and the bed and bath was perfect after a long day on the brecons
No dinner available and only breakfast for 2 day. However we knew about the kitchen being closed. The breakfast was excellent when it re-opened.
The room was absolutely beautiful with amazing facilities. The staff were incredibly helpful and couldn't do enough. I will certainly be coming back to the Red Lion.
The booked breakfast didn't materialize, even though I was told there was one. But that's a minor and only criticism
The room was huge clean and steeped in history
The traffic noise. The rooms they let out need secondary double glazing or renew old windows with pvc triple glazing shash windows
The room was good value , but the mattress was so bad ,every time I moved The springs were popping , and not big enough for the bed , And there was no ironing board or iron ,
The location to where I needed to be in the morning ,Very close to the company I was working for .
Room was very large and warm, plenty of wardrobe space but was not needed. We did not have meals as we were with friends. En suite very clean and with excellent shower. There was no noise from the pub below.
Four poster bed and floor creaked as the inn is very old. TV did not work but this was not a problem.
cosy room, lovely bed. tea and coffee facilities topped up, plenty of clean towels
Parts of room not polished, dust on skirting etc flooring was quite uneven
Location was close to where we were visiting. staff were pleasant.
All the doors were open downstairs, revealing how chaotic and untidy it was. Bathroom was clean, bedroom had very poor beds in it. I had the feeling that I was going to slip out of the bottom of the bed through the night. Only in the morning did I notice that the two sets of wheels that we supposed to be at the bottom of the bed were missing. Basic problems that wouldn't take a lot to fix(money wise) just time and care.
Friendly, helpful staff.Good sized room.Good breakfast.Interesting interior decor.
TV did not work in room.No red wine available in bar.
The shower. Tea making facilities. TV
The bed. Thin, non supportive mattress that was too small for the bed frame. Springs made a fearful noise every time I turned over. Decor was supposedly "quirky" but just came across as weird.
The location was lovely and the property is beautiful. The deluxe room was a fantastic place to relax and recharge.
The pub/ hotel is in the process of being refurbished so there was no food option. Will be fantastic when set up.
