About
A charming English manor house close to the A1 road. WiFi is free in public areas and food is served all day. Built on foundations which date back to the 12th Century, the hotel is reputed to have been Henry VIII’s hunting lodge and home to the Eden family. It houses secret passages and even a friendly ghost or two! Set in its own landscaped grounds and equipped with multi-functional rooms, it is an ideal base for exploring County Durham's many attractions. These include Durham Cathedral and Castle, the Durham Dales, Bishop Auckland, and Barnard Castle. The Manor House Hotel is a dog friendly hotel and dogs are more than welcome to come into our bar/lounge/brasserie areas. We only have certain rooms that cater for dogs these are located in our courtyard and are our double or twin rooms. There is a £15 charge per night per dog, this can be added upon booking to settle on check in. Please notify the team as early as possible if you plan to bring your lovely dog with you. Please note that access to our spa facilities (including gym) is not included in your booking, but you are more than welcome to enjoy the recently refurbished facilities for a small charge of £20 per person, per day, per night, which includes spa access on day of arrival (and use of our sauna, steam room, pool, jacuzzi and relaxation area), as well as robe and towel hire.

Bed was small.
Beautiful hotel , staff lovely & helpful
Our room was in the courtyard, by 7am people were right outside our window talking and smoking, I would love to stay there again when visiting our family next time but would ask to stay in the main hotel to avoid this happening
Cannot imagine returning
Dated decor and overall scruffy. Staff disinterested in customer care. Building lovely to look at but desperately needs overhaul inside and outside.
Pleasant staff and a large warm room - we had to put the heating on although it was summer! A very good situation - convenient parking and close bus stops.
Not enough hooks/, shelves in bathroom. No toilet brush!
Lovely clean and spacious rooms. Dog friendly.
Overcharged on checking out.Breakfast wasn’t great. Took a long time to be served. Items were cold on the plate.
The hotel has lots of history, and the staff were amazing. The breakfast and dinners were lovely.Great location.
There for a wedding / beautiful building and lovely staff. Comfortable room and fabulous breakfast
A bit more signage might be useful as quite spread out. A hook on the back of the bathroom door!
Gorgeous building and decor, lovely outdoor area. Spacious well decorated rooms. Staff good. Food excellent
Nothing stayed for my daughters wedding. It was fantastic, beautiful surroundings. The perfect dssy
Perfect wedding venue, attentive staff, great food. Modern and historic, which retains some original features
We had a pleasant one night stay there. The rooms were small but comfortable
The hotel is in need of updating and is slightly careworn, but was only an overnight stay so not a major problem
The staff at the hotel were very helpful and friendly. The breakfast was good as well. We paid extra for the spa and it was lovely and not busy at all. Pretty grounds and charming building.
There was an event on the Saturday night which ended up being quite loud late at night unfortunately. Also the bed in the room was quite small.
Attended an evening event at the hotel .Lovely room and bar staff were very friendly and helpful.
Room was clean and comfortable.
There was a wedding on on the first night, which I was not told about at the time of booking. It was directly opposite my room and did cause additional noise. It would have been considerate to have been informed of this ahead of time. Guests were polite and well-behaved but after a 6.5 hour drive to get there, I was quite frustrated by the additional noise. Also price of room (£195 for 2 nights) should have included breakfast and spa access. Once these were potentially added on (£70 extra for the 2 nights) the total was in excess of other 4 and 5 star hotels in the area! I opted for no breakfast or spa to keep the cost down. I did have a lovely stay but price was a bit steep for what it was. Staff could also not get coffee machine to work for decaf!Lovely hotel with good staff BUT extra payments for breakfast and spa make it expensive for what it is.
Quite hot in the room with no fan or air conditioning
Breakfast was not that great, not much choice, tough sausages, uncooked tomato, why offer three types of eggs and hollandaise but little else hot?
Breakfast was better than when we stayed there last year as now offer toast and a selection of fruit, but for what you pay could offer so much more!
Lovely setting and building.Pleasant and helpful staff.Room was a bit too warm at night but otherwise a great stay. Breakfast was very good.
Beautiful setup. Very rustic and authentic feel.
Spa was not very clean, especially dressing rooms. Restaurant staff were not the most welcoming. Stood at the desk for 10 minutes despite having a reservation and had to go find a seat myself despite there being only 2 tables there.
The staff are lovely and friendly, our dog was made to feel very welcome. I was a little disappointed in the food - it was overcooked unfortunately. I had a chicken burger and because it was so dry the crispy coating fell off, this wasn't a major issue, but on going for breakfast the next morning I noticed the bits of food that had fallen off were still on the table and hadn't been cleared away. We didn't use the spa, so can't comment, but our room and the dining room were both very lovely.
The food. It was edible, but not great. As well as the issue with the chicken burger, the ham that came with the breakfast eggs looked quite grey, I chose not to eat it.
