Pros +
- The dinner was amazing and tasted like quality ingredients. I rented a bike and that was great for getting into the lower parts of the town and back. It was clear that this was an updated property and was definitely one of the most modern places I've gotten to stay.
- It was super clean. Modern. No frills. Check in was via a machine. We laid out our own futons in the room. We took the tatami room without a shower (had a sink and a toilet). Shared shower rooms (like in a gym) available on another floor, or you could use the public bath facilities which were super clean and modern. The public bath has indoor and outdoor onsen.Had alacarte dinner in the restaurant onsite - excellent tempura and very good local craft beer selection. Free parking is available right at the hotel. Self service laundry machines available too. Common kitchenette. A pretty cool lounge (saw someone napping there so we didn't go in). Walking distance to town (about 15 mins), but I wouldn't do it at night because there are no street lights.
- I honestly cannot understand how cheap this hotel is considering the fantastic facilities it offer, the size of the rooms, the courtesy of the staff, etc. etc. I am sad we only stayed there one night and would suggest staying at least two. The private bathtub/small onsen in the room was fantastic. The room is also so peaceful and quiet, I had the best sleep ever.
Cons -
- The stink bug infestation made me a bit uncomfortable. I had two or three in my room that I had to handle and I saw them in the shared bathrooms and hallways.
- Many others were having some kind of BBQ dish at the dinner restaurant, and all of our clothes smelt like BBQ after dinner. The air filtering at the restaurant could be improved. Or maybe provide an air freshener spray for our clothes (like those available in most Japanese hotels).
- The pillow could be regular pillow with no bean filling or there could be option to choose from. Since it was winter, the ladies showers in 2nd floor where very cold.

All was as expected. I enjoyed hot-spring facility and that it was open for 24hrs, except cleaning time. The dormitory room for ladies where specious and comfortable. It's in walkable distance from Shima bus terminal, takes about ~15mins.
The pillow could be regular pillow with no bean filling or there could be option to choose from. Since it was winter, the ladies showers in 2nd floor where very cold.
Overall is fair value. Stayed at a twin room with private onsen (a bath tub).
Breakfast & dinner not expensive but quality is so-so.
A marvelous stay!!The employees were helpful and friendly, everything was exceptionally clean. The beds are comfy, they have softer pillows if you ask. They have so many features!! Table tennis, a few board games, but best of all - a library (all Japanese) and a wonderful place to wind down and read your books: the forest room, located on the second floor!! And of course a perfect Onsen area with indoor and outdoor bath!I’ll definitely be back some time!
The shared rooms are actually separate rooms with fabric curtains! Super convenient:) The staff are amazing!
No tea in all the building! It made me feel very desperate :D Please, add tea to the kitchen:)
We liked dinner.
Pretty much everything. It’s not explained on booking.com that it’s essentially a youth hostel. You have to check in yourself. Make your own bed. We paid extra for private bathrooms and hot water wasn’t working. It was just an awful spot. Wasn’t cheap either!!
The bath/onsen was amazing. It was a lovely way to unwind after heaps of walking around and exploring the area.
There wasn't much that wasn't good. The only thing that a could nit pick about was the coin dryer. It wasn't great had to put on multiple cycles. But otherwise everything else was perfect.
Favourite hostel I've stayed in a month of travelling japan. Absolutely beautiful location, near the dam so I was able to catch the sunrise easily and some cool night shots (check out the stars at night). Not far from the main street and some good onsens e.g. Sekizenkan Kashoutei which inspired Spirited Away, about 20-30mins walk to nearest ATM at a post office though so make sure you have enough cash. Quiet when I was there, only one other person in my dorm. I liked that in the 'dorm' you basically got a mini room instead of a capsule, seperated by a curtain and wall with no ceiling. Plenty of space. But the privacy was nice, bed was comfy, lockers provided. Kitchen was good and there were vending machines on site, could also buy snacks and souvenirs from reception which helped as nearby shops and restaurants have changeable hours. Staff were super friendly with pretty good English although sometimes hard to find. Onsen was beautiful and often had it all to myself, outdoors onsen under maple leaves was super nice. Could hire private sauna at the top too which was cool, has a cold bath as well and toilet/shower. Wish I could have stayed longer!
Stink bugs were annoying and would come into your room if you had the light on. They do provide duct tape to catch them though.
Wonderful newly renovated hotel in Shima Onsen - nice calm and relaxing area and surroundings. Our room was facing the mountain slope with all of its greenery and we had a lovely night. The best was definitely the Onsen of the hotel. The Rotenburo had an outdoor view on some maple leaves tree and other plants and it was just too relaxing. Stayed there for nearly 2 hours and afterwards fell into the comfortable bed. There is also a really comfortable Forest Room to read a book or get a bit cozy, there is a table tennis table and the coffee area also looked really nice
The wifi in the room was not really working, which we did not so much care about as we stayed in the Onsen and roamed around the city the whole day.
Onsen and facilities were really nice.
Getting up the hill with my mother in law was difficult. A taxi service to the top could have made this even better.
The relaxing atmosphere is the key concept of the hotel. Staff are helpful and promptly responsive with kindness. The restaurant has great beef sukiyaki set menu. The indoor public bath is clean while the outdoor one commands a cozy feeling in a well designed garden corner.
A little bit away from the main onsen area. However this could be a positive thing if you enjoy a quiet neighborhood.
the bathtub in the room, and there’s a public kitchen which is quite convenient for long stay
surprisingly, there’s no room services! we stayed for five days, we had to change bedsheets and clean the bin bucket on our own. not to mention, the room had been emptied for quite some time, the bedsheets were covered with dusts, made us suffering a lot from allergy.
Nice and relaxed place. I really liked the Onsen and the superieur terrace room that was quiet, also thanks to the respectful Japanese guests.Very kind staff especially the young lady from Sri Lanka, but all of them did their best to make my stay as pleasant as possible and I stayed for 7 nights!Very good bed and bedding and an easy walk to the charming village of Shima Onsen with numerous restaurants and cafés.
It was clean and spacious for a hostel and the staff was very nice
We booked as a group of 4, two women and two men. They separated our rooms even though one of our rooms were only us two, and it was totally possible to put us all in one room. We were a little confused.
The Japanese rooms were large, the staff was friendly and the food was great. We did the included dinner and breakfast and the portions were large, especially the dinner. You definitely won't be hungry. The breakfast is traditional Japanese fare which was good, but may not be suitable for some oversee travelers. They also had a lot of books for kids and magazines to peruse in their lobby and library section. Overall, the value quotient is fantastic.
The outdoor bath was too hot for my kids and one sink didn't drain properly (fortunately there were two sinks in the bathroom). The location is so so, but what you'd expect for such a good price.
This place far exceeded my expectations. It is easily accessible from both bus and train. Many other attractions and restaurants in walking distance. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I ended up eating most of my meals here because the food was incredibly delicious. The onsen has two many pools, one inside and one outside. The only sauna there is available for an affordable private rental of 80 minutes. Super clean and tidy and lots of common space to either find space near people or alone. Large shared kitchen. Highly recommend staying here.
I think the property was there for the nearby summer activity . Very little people was there during our stay on winter Feb. And we love the quietness and freedom to park anywhere, for free. And also the onsen that - most of the time , only us was using .
The hot water in the in-room sink wasn't functioning, seemingly an ongoing issue across all rooms since the hotel's inception because an aged notice was by the sink. Amidst winter weather, the water was freezing cold, the lack of hot water made our stays uncomfortable. Can’t even use the toilet without a functional sink. We need to use the the shared bathroom for everything, situated two floors below, was also chilly since there was not much guest and we need to manually turn on the heater upon usage . We had to anticipate this 30 minutes before use as there was not much guest in the hotel. Additionally, interactions with the receptionist were not pleasant; when requesting an extra pillow, the response was a terse "no extra pillow." Despite chatting with the hotel a few times upon our arrival, we were not queried about dinner arrangements upon arrival at 8 pm. We were informed that the set dinner required booking a day in advance, and the nearest dining option was over an hour's drive away. Moreover, guests were responsible for finding and assembling their futon bed, a task we resorted to completing with online assistance.
The atmosphere is nice. the staff are very accommodating and friendly too. the amenities are also good as they have a complete kitchen along with nice relaxing spaces. the fiid was great!
