Pros +
- Inside interior, cleanliness, food at restaurant, receptionist was super nice.
- An absolutely stunning hotel right next to Highway 1, which is convenient when traveling between Reykjavík and Akureyri or vice versa. The hotel has a hot tub (not a natural one with a geyser, but an electric one). Very pleasant, polite, and good-humored staff.
- We liked everything, the rooms the breakfast, the people
Cons -
- Just the upkeep of the exterior of the hotel. From outside looks a little run down. But honestly I would prefer that the interior be superior to the exterior.

- The outside of the hotel could use an upgrade as it looks old. They might need a bigger restaurant as it was booked out the night we arrived and there’s not a lot of other options nearby.

Location is ideal for Aurora spotting. The inside of the hotel looks like it’s recently refurbished and fresh.

Breakfast was really good! Bed really comfortable!
The shower was not really working well at night and even in the morning! We just felt disappointed because shower is one of the most important facilities that is primordial to have in a hotel! My suggestion is that they should at least to give a discount or something like that because of it!
The room size and the finishes in the room were top notch. We had the double bed superior(supreme?). We really enjoyed the extra sitting area and double sinks. We are nearing the end of our 10 day Ring Road adventure and the extra space was just what we needed. The property is unique, (a former school) but we enjoyed a cocktail in the bar/conference room area that was the former gymnasium. It had a cool vibe. The food was excellent for dinner and the we enjoyed the breakfast buffet the next morning. The best part was -we saw the Northern Lights. There is a great viewing area behind the property on the former track. Excellent stay if you are on the Ring Road.
Our only complaint was the blackout curtains do not really block out the light. Better curtains and shades would be wonderful.
The room was very nice and decent size. Staff were very friendly.
Breakfast buffet area on the smaller size and not much room for people to move around the food. Felt cramped. Have to go outside to get to the buffet and restaurant. Prefer to be in same building for eating.
Clean with comfortable beds and unexpectedly large rooms for Iceland.
The barn door style bathroom door didn't allow for much privacy. Breakfast was just adequate.
Very friendly, helpful staff. Great food at hotel restaurant for dinner and breakfast. Larger coffee mugs.
A little expensive.
Food is nice, there may be room for improvements.
Bathroom door almost locked me in. Food a bit less than an expected and a bit more expensive.
The staff is friendly. The breakfast is good. The room is clean.
Staff were very accommodating. The restaurant is also highly recommended. The hot tub was relaxing and much needed.
Best hotel of our 4 weeks in Iceland! Staff were amazing, dinner was fabulous, and we had the best nights sleep on the comfy bed!
The room was spacious, and the bathroom was one of the best during our 17-day excursion around Iceland. We got in really late and found our room key on the front desk counter with instructions for checking in and breakfast. We met a young man who appeared to be cleaning. He told me to call him if we needed something. We did need ice. So I tried calling, but we weren't able to connect. But on one of my trips through the lobby, I almost ran smack into him. When I explained my ice need, he went into the kitchen and got me a load of ice. So nice!Loved the breakfast.
I can't remember what we had requested in terms of beds. Normally, we prefer to have one bed, and in Iceland, that generally means two twins pushed together. These were just two twin beds. But, hey, I slept fine. So, not a big deal.
From the outside, Hotel Laugarbakki has a rather functional modern look, with a bit of weather-worn patina and not much visual charm – it feels quite remote and not immediately welcoming. However, once inside, the hotel is well maintained, clean, and furnished in a tasteful Scandinavian design. Our room was modern, surprisingly spacious, and very comfortable. Considering Icelandic standards, value for money is acceptable.
The real surprise was the restaurant – an absolute hidden gem.We enjoyed a fine dining–level dinner featuring beautifully executed dishes:- a starter plate of Icelandic specialties (cod paste, gravlax, 32-day smoked lamb)- mains like filet, lamb filet, and truffle ravioli, all cooked to perfection- and an outstanding wine pairingService was discreet and professional, and the entire meal for a family of four (incl. two children’s menus and wine) felt remarkably fair for Iceland and the quality offered.
We were in a 4-bed room and it was a very functional, with a unique layout. The included breakfast was excellent, i especially loved their thin waffles. The hotel location (right off the highway), breakfast, and room that housed 4 adults made it perfect for us.
Property was a bit rundown. Room and bath were large.
The dinner was not good at all.The fish was dry and tiny portion. Staff was not communicative.
Clean room, breakfast, parking with wifi. Stop hotel.
Breakfast were not varieties
Property was updated, clean, and very comfortable! Breakfast was lovely in the morning as well.
From the outside, the building looks a bit like a barracks, which doesn’t do justice to the place — the rooms are spacious and cozy. Special mention goes to the restaurant, especially for its local lamb burgers. Fantastic hot tubes included.
