Pros +
- Beautiful property, stunning setting, luxurious rooms, great spa facilities, 3 Michelin star restaurant in house
- We had a wonderful stay at Althoff Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg. The hotel is stunning — a perfect blend of historic charm and modern luxury. From the moment we arrived, the staff were welcoming, professional, and attentive to every detail. Our room was spacious, beautifully designed, and offered breathtaking views. Breakfast was exceptional, with a wide variety of fresh, high-quality options served in an elegant setting.
- Beautifully renovated castle / palace. The 2 star Michelin restaurant, where we dined the 2nd night was amazing. All in all a very enjoyable stay,we would definitely come back to this property.
Cons -
- Staff never delivered ironing board (good thing our friends who stayed in the same hotel got theirs, so we just shared)
- Needs small enhancements when it comes to technology like USB extension better coverage of Wifi I do understand Althoff owners point of view as its a place of ZEN
- The classic cheese and charcuterie served during breakfast were disappointing. The restaurant Salvadore Dali Bar was underwhelming and didn't met expectations according to the price. My biggest issue was that the bouquet of flowers that I ordered many days before arrival wasn't delivered as scheduled. I even had to recall it to reception in order to offer it to my wife.

The Salvador Dali manager was super helpful was smiling supportive he served food at a time most kitchens were closed.I cant thank him enough. The serenity of the place the village beside it the cleanliness of the place considering its massive size. The breakfast team is amazing

I have stayed in this hotel many times, and alyays my impressions from the stay were positive. But not this time. I booked a junior suite as in my previous stays, but instead I teceived something else. For 480 euro per night I got a room with two small dungeon- like windows(picture attached)- the only sourse of a daylight. That the receptionist attempt to convince me is a junior suite. Misleading and unacceptable ! What a gratitude for a loyal customer !
We loved the hotel as it was beautiful and offered many services.Restaurants were nice, especially la Trattoria Enoteca.Room service with breakfast was good.

delicious breakfast, very nice Spa (swimming pool, sauna's), beautiful 'Schloss', luxurious room
The beds were better than in many other hotels, but did not live up to the excellent standard of the rest of the hotel
Great experience overall, very friendly staff with good service, good facilities
Overall great property, only issue was the air conditioning which did not work in our room - and didn’t get fixed despite letting the staff know, the suites are on the top floor and get heated up quickly
The most luxurious experience we could have asked for. An amazing free spa and great level of service.
If you are doing a Cologne city break it is far away. But great transport direct to the city. It was nice to see the suburbs and wider Germany as part of the trip if that’s your thing.
I dont recommend it at all
One staff member was very unhelpful and I had to change my travel plans and leave earlier. They recused to refund me my stay and had me pay 2 nights even though I stayed only 1. I booked a suite and yet the breakfast was not included.
Our dinners at the Dali bar/restaurant were particularly enjoyable! Nice food/drinks, great service, pleasant mood and very nice live music. All the restaurants on side are great (we tried them over few visits) but the Dali quickly became our go-to for a relaxed evening. The spa is of course excellent, and we just love wandering around the hotel (treat yourself with a night visit of the library!).
We had some issues with the room (heating was off, then too strong) that took us several calls and/or visit to the counter to resolve. Nothing too bad, but a bit unfortunate to deal with that over a short weekend visit.
Wonderful building, room was spacious and comfortable
A little confusing to get into the rooms
Breakfast, expensive but superb. Piano music in the lobby at afternoon tea in a very relaxed atmosphere.
The matrass was very hard, amenities in the room could be more extended, and we missed a separate shower, instead of included in the slippery bath tub.
I liked the atmosphere of the building and small details like water with citrus fruits in the gym.
Hard to find ones way (No clear entrance to the hotel, confusing corridoors and staircases, not enough signs where to find what. Maybe a castle layout with the facilities would have helped orientation.)The gym was underequipped and undermaintained, in my opinion (Only one machine for strength building, the rest was cardio. And the cable machine had broken handles. Maybe understandable that the hotel doesn't care because nobody seemed to use the gym. Then again, I stopped using it quickly, because I didn't find what I wanted.)Too expensive for too little value add (Hotel night extremely expensive, but not even breakfast was included in the price and everything costs extra. There wasn't even an ironing board in the room and the service would have cost extra. Unclear whether the stuff in the fridge and the chocolate would have been included or not. Apart from that, the chair in the room was too low to work on the desk properly. That's something minor I wouldn't point out in a normal hotel, but in such an expensive 5-star hotel, shouldn't things feel right?)All in all a pleasant stay but not worth that money.
Impressive building, great restaurants, great staff, great English speakers, comfortable beds, very quiet
The chicken in the salad at Salvador Dali had a very bad taste (simply boiled, maybe not even seasoned). But the meat seemed to be there for 3 days. The pool and the spa area are nice, but very small compared to the size of the whole chateau. Not proportional. Not much to do around unless the weather is nice. The jacuzzi was not hot / the next day was mentioned as out of order. The massage is overpriced.
Incredible buildingNice spaGreat restaurants Close to Cologne
We stayed during the Christmas time. First of all, the preparations for this period were wonderful. The atmosphere was great. The staff was very polite and attentive. The spa and wellness area was not crowded. On Christmas, there was a special ball dinner for two nights, and it was really beautiful, with unlimited drink service
Initially, we made a mistake by choosing the grand lit room. The problem was that the room descriptions didn’t explain the details of what each room was like and the differences between them. Had we known, we would not have booked the room, as it was in the hotel's extention building, with a tiny window and a sloped roof at the top. The walk to the room was always long, and there was no direct elevator access. Also, we had to walk through the restaurant each time we went to our room, which was quite inconvenient. As for breakfast, if you opt for the buffet and cannot consume gluten or lactose, you’re essentially wasting your money, as the options for such dietary restrictions were very limited. We ended up canceling our breakfast for the next day.
Gorgeous place, dog friendly, even allowing dog in the Italian Restaurant. Room service for the dog. Nice spa and fitness room. Large underground car park in the hotel.
Room Junior Suit does not feel like a Suite, that has to do not only due to the architecture but also interior design is quite bland. We did upgrade and that room was brillant.
Breakfast was really good, a bit pricy to be honest . restaurant Dali was okay, but was way overpriced for the actual restaurtant style, and food design, and nothing to special. Didnt feel worth it.
Room was spotlessly clean and well appointed. Lovely little treats left for guests. Excellent quality toiletries available to use. Wonderful breakfast with a very varied choice of items available. Staff very friendly and helpful. Very easy to access train station to travel into Cologne.
Needs to be clearer on booking / hotel description about extra costs for parking.
