Pros +
- We had a chance of enjoying the open space onsen while it was snowing. It was a superb experience! It is a great choice staying in Hakodate-Onuma Prince Hotel!
- The location is so pretty in the trees and with the nice ponds. It had a great shuttle to the lakes and excellent breakfast buffet including lots of vegetarian options for my husband. The views from the rooms and onsen were beautiful and the rooms are quiet.
- Ceres motorcycles parking, good breakfast, good views from room, great outdoor onsen, good bar, good walking around grounds, large room-slightly worn but clean. Will be refreshed in March 2026. Prices will go way up. Mostly Chinese/korean tour groups.
Cons -
- The beds are a bit hard.
- Breaky often rushed, slightly worn onset/rooms(scuffs on walls, stained/ripped carpet, peeling wallpaper.
- This hotel is NOT tattoo friendly. There an amazing onsen (according to my dad) that they promote on their website but it doesn’t say anything about tattoos. It is only after you book and get there that there are no tattoos signs everywhere in the hotel. I’m completely fine with respecting the culture but I wish the rules were explicitly given. I booked this hotel specifically for the outdoor onsen but couldn’t use it in the end. If I knew, I would have booked somewhere else.

The room was very comfortable (even just the standard room) with a beautiful view on the forest. You can do laundry for free. There is a free shuttle bus to Onuma park. Commodities in general were great.

Nice view of the forest and lake.
Check-in staff won't listened despite me trying to tell him that reservations were made in our Christian names which are not included in our passports. No complimentary water bottles in room and bathroom's double taps were difficult to switch around.
Friendly helpful staff especially Howlett. Wonderful onsen which was magical at night in the outside part with the snow and lights.
Only expensive buffet option for meals at the hotel and nearest other alternatives/restaurants at least 30 mins walk away.
Excellent property, comfortable room. Mountain View is just great from the room. We didn’t want to leave, it’s such a gem and great value for money. Hotel has shuttle from onumakoen station, you can check on their site for the time.
The foreign front desk waiter is amiable and seems very ready to help foreign guests. Window view was suburb!
There were no bath robes anywhere though I saw some other osen users wearing them. No mineral water in the room I guess the location itself is a good spring source so drinking direct is the best? surprisingly winter is the low season so very reduced shuttle bus to the JR station. Mostly would appreciate if there are other dining options other than buffet dinner!
Location was quite secluded and close to nature. It was fine for us since we rented a car but I can image this being a negative point for guests taking public transport
No aircon in the room was ridiculous, the pillows were half the normal size and twice as hard. The staff were somewhat unfriendly and the hotel was extremely old. Probably the hotel experience on my 32 booking on this website.
The most beautiful onsen setting. Baths were spotlessly clean with luxurious amenities. Lovely trails through the surrounding woodland. Good bakery on site.
Room was slightly too hot with poor air conditioning.
The stunning location surrounded by forest and lakes The free shuttle service from the station and back
Still being charged to use the Onsen when we weren’t allowed in (tattoos)
Wonderful setting, comfortable room with woodland view.
Breakfast and dinner buffets were in a huge conference room setting with no ambiance!
Beautiful location, surrounded by nature and a short drive to a gorgeous lake. We all enjoyed our dinner in the restaurant. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the price was really reasonable.
The air conditioner didn’t seem to be working very well on the cooling function.
Superb location, quiet design, most beautiful ofuro, over looking the Onuma.
Good breakfast with great view
Rooms need to be updated
Design of building itself, public baths and general comfort of rooms.
Limited access from Hakodate if you are arriving by train (last shuttle bus to the hotel is 6:20 pm from Onumakoen Mae Station if memory serves which means leaving Hakodate at 5:30), as such aside from a convenient store which closes at 9:00 pm limited dining options.A small point, had let them know it was my birthday but received zero acknowledgement, which dampened our feelings on this occasion.
Surrounding is good, almost inside the forest. Outdoor hot bath has great view
Everything was excellent.
Communicating in English was challenging. This was less of a problem years ago. It seems that over the years English has become less of a requirement for most Japanese. Fortunately a person Peter (Canadian/Japanese resident) was there to help us.
The hotel is convenient for the Hakodate Shinkansen (by car). Surrounded by managed woodland and nature areas which are teaming with wildlife. The Staff are lovely and kind.
Very dated decor… maybe they’re hoping it will become retro one day but in reality the fixtures and fittings are cheap and worn. Carpets are dirty, walls are dirty. The most annoying thing is they play loud annoying music in the corridors from 06:00-23:00 which means you can neither have and early night or a late morning… why why why????
(1) The breakfast was great - wide varieties of japanese & western dishes given in a ball room size place (Prince Hall). Unlimited supply of salmon roe, tamago, makari, grilled fish, self made beancurd, fries, wedges, muffins etc etc. The coffee machines in the breakfast hall made great drinks and they provided paper cups & caps for free takeaway.(2) The staff were very welcoming even with limited English ability. They were attentive, efficient, polite and warm - all of them from room makers to porters. (3) The whole hotel was filled with fresh air & water - very refreshing from the moment you stepped out of your car park lot. The surrounding woods were a bit daunting in the dark but it burst into lives in the sunlight. We liked it very much. (4) The room although aged, was very well maintained and clean. The toilet has full amenities provided, with clean water and strong shower. Daily house keeping was done and they did a great job.(5) The in-house onsen was great - very clean, optimal temperature and the hotel provideds full suites of clothes, towels, slippers, bag for a comfortable soak. The onsen tax was just a few dollars per pax per stay - very worth it!(6) The surface parking had many lots which allowed us to return to the hotel at late hours. It was just 100m easy walk from the hotel main building. A cottage style bread shop was located within the parking area.
(1) The room had few lights and were all in yellow shades except in the toilet. It would be good to add brighter light sources. The air-conditioning was a bit weak too during our stay which had a heat wave baking Hokkaido.(2) The hotel was located 30min drive away from Hakodate and you needed to drive out for meals as the restaurants closed early. We had a car and it was not a problem but could be an issue for those not driving.
