About
Only the name reminds us of the military. This historic hotel is one of the most beautiful in Switzerland. Each room is different; all are individually and lovingly furnished with original 1960s furniture and offer an above-average amount of space. The location of the hotel is also unique. Quiet yet central. The old town and all sights such as the monastery and abbey library are just a few minutes' walk away. The hotel's own restaurant with a large chestnut garden and a view of the Kreuzbleiche green space spoils you with exclusively homemade, seasonal dishes. The Hotel Militärkantine is a hospitality house and a meeting place for people who value design, enjoyment, sustainability, culture, social responsibility and respect for nature. Everything here is a little different, a little more individual, a little more hospitable and a lot more personal. Free parking, free use of our e-bikes (subject to availability), free WiFi, private children's playground, free public transport tickets for 3 zones, iPad in the room. St.Gallen with its UNESCO cultural heritage is the ideal starting point for hikes and excursions of all kinds. The Säntis is only 20 mi away, the Dornbirn trade fair (Austria) only 23 mi away. By train you can reach Konstanz (D) in half an hour. The nearest airport is St. Gallen-Altenrhein Airport, 14 mi from the Militärkantine St.Gallen accommodations. Zurich Airport can be reached by train in an hour. With the free Mobility Ticket you can be at Lake Constance in 20 minutes.

Pros +
- Architectural heritage, well maintained, true to its origins, comfortable, spacious, kind staff!
- The room was spacious and it was good having a restaurant on site
- Very cool historic building with midcentury detailing. We didn't eat at restaurant but it was lively and welcoming and we wish we'd had more time to enjoy it. The location wasn't super central, but it was convenient enough for an easy walk to the city center and old town.
Cons -
- It may be out of the old time… but is this really a downside? I wonder!
- The bed and pillows were uncomfortable (we had to keep asking for more and more pillows) and there was next to no lighting in the room, which during winter is not ideal.
- The room felt a little impersonal, it could have used some rugs and artwork. The floor was a bit creaky, but didn't bother us too much. The bed was pretty firm.

Everything was exceptional. From the parking, hotel, staff, helpfulness, food, room - it was all lovely.
Have been there a second time with the same review. Great place for a quick night over, very conveniently located, spotlessly clean, and very friendly and attentive staff members, and good breakfast, facilities and parking on site. In short: Everything you need, nothing you don't
Nothing, but some of the rooms, due to the change from campus to hotel, have big conduits running over the floor. Funny, look, no minimisation of any comfort or something, just a simple visual item that may look funky on second floor rooms
The hotel is in a convenient location to the highway, city, and park. It is incredibly clean and has incredibly friendly staff members.Spotless cleanGreat breakfastPlenty of parkingSilent environment Park literally out of the hotel door Friendly staff members and, for an Ozzie living now in Switzerland, pretty good coffee
No TV ;-) Which can actually be an advantage
I had a wonderful stay. The building, the garden and the restaurant have a charmThe perfect combination of an old era and a new one.The room was very comfortable. A unique light from the windows. The view of the city and the forest is magical.Quiet . The lighting is ideal to calm you down. The interior made you feel at home, with style and soft lines.I want to go into detail about cleanlinessPerhaps the cleanest hotel I have traveled to.The common areas smelled of lavender and the room was obsessively bright. The hotel staff is genuinely welcoming. The people there showed you personal interest. The location is ideal.Breakfast in the lovely garden is a very beautiful experienceOf course I honored the desserts every day since they were so fresh and delicious.
This property is very unique and charming. The grounds and the area are very nice. There is a good parking and staff are friendly. The best part is the restaurant in which the food was delicious.
The pillow in the bed is far too thin and not confortable.
the building, the restoration (from a militar kantine to a nice hotel), rooms (with some furniture from the period), the big bar at the ground floor, the super nice terrace gravel floored... bathrooms superb
Its 10 minutes walking from the station... its nice, not in the very-centre, but this lets you have easy parking & nice big terrace... not perfect... nothing is perfect
Very nice staff, good breakfast, interesting hotel architecture and interior design - minimalistic and a bit retro. Super clean.
Pillow was completely flat, almost like sleeping without the pillow at all.
Had a really comfortable “home-like” feel. lovely big, airy room. Very convenient, great location.
The property was very clean. Staff were friendly.
There were no phones to the front desk. No room service and no TV. wanted to have dinner in restaurant but it was booked. The server didn’t seem to care. I asked at the point of check in about eating in the dinning room for dinner. The gentleman helping us check in was nice enough to go over the menu in English but didn’t say we needed a reservation. it was disappointing.
This is a lovely property in a beautiful, convenient setting. The breakfast, available for an additional CHF 15, was fantastic and made to order. I have dietary restrictions and the kitchen was very accommodating, even giving me feta cheese instead of the usual varieties.
I found the bed way too hard and the lack of a fridge was problematic since I had items that required refrigeration. I also found it inconvenient that the room had no kettle, and I brought my own.
The location of the hotel was nice, it is right in front of the park, we could enjoy the green within the room. And the room is very clean and modern, but the hotel itself still has some touch of antique. Loved it!
There was a event at the parking lot, very loud and crowded with people until 10pm. Therefore, we couldn't sleep until the event was over.
The property had a very unique restaurant and we ended up having some good breakfasts and dinners. The staff also was helpful with getting us a transportation pass. Also, it did not have a tv, but has an iPad and we were able to watch a movie on Netflix.
All was well.
Very charming old building. Not in the city centre but hotel offers free bikes which is great!
Staff on check in could be a little bit more welcoming. Afterwards they were very nice!
Bad
After I’ve paid hotel fee by card at property on second day they start to change me another time.
The property was clean. Staff was friendly and accommodating. Had a wonderful kitchen bar area that was open most nights late and on at least 2 occasions were very happy spending the night there instead of wandering into town.
It may not be in the city center which may be an issue if a traveler feels they need to be closer (less than 10 minutes walk to the train) but a short walk and it was nice actually to be located where we were. I would definitely stay here again.
Super, different then the regular breakfast rooms, but very nice.
