    Pros +

    • Staying in a trailer was sort of fun; a very different style of accommodation from a standard room.
    • What a wonderful surprise Happy Apple Backpackers was. Great staff, good room, clean spacious kitchen, plentiful showers, an excellent outdoor areas, off street parking and a great cafe next door. The only thing I wasn’t fussed on was the oversoft mattress, - but which others may prefer. Maybe time for a new one?
    • - Close to venue where we needed to be- Value for money

    Cons -

    • This is more of a dormitory for agricultural workers than a travelers¿ hostel, with different vibe. Showers were like a campsite: five minutes and you¿re lucky if you get any hot water. So many male guests that sometimes they can use the women¿s bathroo
    • - Awareness of cockroaches coming in thru open window/s.. it freaked my daughter and mokopuna out when we saw cockroache/s in our room- Availability of proprietors at their office .. we couldnt pay early.. we went to our hui 6.30am and returned 10pm the 2 nights we stayed there.- Because of our times at Te Awhina Marae .. we couldnt / didnt see anyone until last night- I couldnt use the money card i had in BPacker Eftpos machine so had to rely on someone else to pay for my/our stay
    • It’s about 20 minutes to walk to the town. It’s mainly just one street. You do need a car as a really nice beach Kaiteriteri is about 15 kilometres away, and there’s no public transport to get around. There’s a public bus from Nelson to Motueka three times a day for 9 dollars. There’s a coach company for about 60 dollars. But they don’t answer the phone and don’t get back to you when you leave a message.

Clean and comfortable, cheaply priced and not too noisy as far as hostels go

Bout a 10min walk to town centre if have no vehicle. Apart from that was all good

Large communal area if you want to meet people in the hostel. Fridge in the room. Fans in the room but not aircon.

The sheets weren't clean - there was fresh blood droplets on a pillow case. The shared bathrooms are cleaned daily but by the evening they are filthy (I know this happens in hostels) but not pleasant. The rooms are very loud and you can hear everything in the room beside you.

Great kitchen facilities. Liked outside sheltered area. Security was good

Noise from other people as no sound proofing in room. Bathrooms needed to be cleaned more regularly throughout the day

    7FionaPosted on: 1-11-2026

Comfy bed. Lightweight bedding for summer. Fan in room. Good communal area. Good off street parking.

Pillow very 'poofy' so not so good if you prefer flatter, but still pretty comfortable. No soundproofing.

Lovely secure establishment. Great kitchen facilities. Our amily room - dbl bed and 2 bunks- was perfect and even had a fridge freezer which was helpful.

Great little backpackers. Well equipped with all you need at an affordable price. Toilets and showers were clean, rooms were perfect, bed was comfy. Great little socialising area in a perfect location

    Honestly, nothing!

    6AndrewPosted on: 1-4-2026

Shared kitchen had all the essentials. Bathrooms were clean. Showers on a 5min timer. Plenty of activities available and common room area with TV

Quadruple room was very small, with one window for ventilation making it hot (in summer). Also inexplicable amount of noise until late at night (midnight) and then again around 5:30am. Seemed to be quite a few permanent "guests" living in cabins

    5AlanPosted on: 1-3-2026

    Friendly staff,facilities were good

The bed was hard and there was a smell up the hallway

    9KellyPosted on: 1-3-2026

Quiet hostel and not too busy (42 beds) with most people not around during the day

The shower curtain in the small bathroom behind the kitchen could do with a wash, the bottom of it would come up clean in the washing machine

    6VikrantPosted on: 1-2-2026

    Nice kitchen and lounge.

The beds were not comfortable at all. The room is really tiny for four people. The other people had lots of stuff and room being too small with less space underneath, there was lots of luggage lying around. The showers were not comfortable.

    8MichaelPosted on: 1-1-2026

Nice place. Cool vibe. Nice staff. Nice garden area. Hood big kitchen.

    6GarethPosted on: 12-30-2025

Decent sized kitchen, however lacked enough microwaves and sharp knives.

Didn't like the lack of maintenance seen everywhere! Missing bedroom door handle, lights that didn't work in the bathrooms or passages. Squeaky bathroom doors that you can hear from your bedroom. Beds not made up. Pillows paper thin that I had to fold in half to sleep on. Just because it's labeled as a backpacker, doesn't mean it doesn't have to be decent.

    8KennedyPosted on: 12-29-2025

Well equipped communal areas, clear property instructions, easy check in and check out.

    7RobertPosted on: 12-23-2025

    Clean family room 13

Table tennis broken, especially the balls. Kicker table broken. Dirty old tea towels.

    6RichellePosted on: 11-18-2025

    Great location and comfy room.

Showers need a good scrub, bathroom hand towels and kitchen tea towels need to be replaced more often.

    7RachelPosted on: 11-16-2025

Very easy check in and responsive staff to messages. towels provided. communal toilets and showers were clean.

the communal kitchen was very large however not the cleanest. this may be a reflection of the guests vs the staff however.
