- Unfortunately, we were there on 27 and 28 October following the disastrous wind storms the Southland experienced. It meant the electrical supply was out and you were operating using a diesel generator and diesel was in short supply, meaning you had to limit the electrical supply at times. The staff did their best to accommodate our needs for a good stay. In light of the situation we couldn't have asked for more. We did ring the day before we arrived and asked about power supply and received assurances about the generator which we agreed to and which were achieved. Thanks for a good stay.
Cons -
- Empty soap in the shower. No screens on the windows (and lots of mosquitoes at night) Shower drained slowly.
- When booking I somehow missed the room had shared facilities, if the price had been cheaper I would have realised. Way too pricey for what we got - a very small room containing only two beds, and a tv with no remote or switches to even turn on and use. I wouldn't call it a garden view, just native shrubbery like when you go camping in the bush. Toilet seats are broken, and curtains are cheap and falling off the rails - wouldn't at all hold any heat over winter time so glad it was summer when we stayed. Sorry but the price is way too much. Before staying I had come from a hotel where I paid the same amount and had a private bathroom and kitchen. Please don't rip people off just because of the location. Would be hesitant to book again, making sure I booked facilities of course!
- Generator that supplied power was turned off from 11 pm to 7 am. The poorly insulated rooms quickly became cold. Even if power had been available 24/7 the rooms would not become warm. The only source of heat was a 2-ft. square passive electric panel.

Convenient to waterfall and lake walks

The shared lounge, kitchen was very well appointed and clean. The rooms were comfy. Nice shower.
There was no firewood ready for the fireplace. Promotional material said there was electric blankets but there were not.
Great location, friendly staff and clean cabins.
Hand sanitizer was rank!! That’s my only criticism.
Location, staff
Lack of kitchen supplies No batteries in smoke alarmsTV didn’t work DVD player didn’t work
Bad
Badly maintained, not cleanStaff at the office add cents to charging cards, only picked up once I left, dishonest behavior, Worst experience ever, do not recommend them at all.
We stayed in the Samson Lodge Rooms with ensuite. Rooms very similar to a nice motel. The Lodge shared kitchen and lounge was well equipped and comfortable with fire and pool table. This area is away from main facilities of Whistling Frog...so perfect if you don't have small children as not close to playground or cafe. Rooms were quiet and warm. Electric blankets and extra blankets were nice touches.
Nothing other than the cafe was a little overpriced, as are all the cafes in the Catlins really.
Location is excellent for many local attractions.
Mould all over windows. No extractor fan in bathroom meant it was wet and mouldy in there too- not cleaned well. No hand soap.Conference room/ kitchen smelt and communal brush and shovel etc were disgusting.Great pool table!
Good location. Clean and tidy cabin. Warm.
Couldn’t get TV to work.
Lovely electric blanket, new bed linen. How the cabinet was situated able to sit and watch the bird life.
A little tight for twin beds could have done with a little more room.
Good location but poor accommodation. Advertised as a resort, but not to resort standards or facilities, more like a scout camp. My fault for not reading fine print perhaps, but there was no fridge in the room, I can't remember the last time I found that in Australia or NZ, noting the price of well over $200NZ for a very basic room. Towels smelled dank, no exhaust fan in bathroom and the shower was fully enclosed with a bubble ceiling and zero ventilation. Cafe also poor, staff and food were JUST ok, but closing at 7 pm? A bit expensive also and minimal soft drink choices. Our food came in good time but our table neighbours waited 1.5 hours only to find their orders hadn't gone through and when they finally got a feed, only 1 if their 2 orders arrived, I was amazed how gracious these O/S visitors were about it, some people would have made a real scene. Sorry guys, you need to really lift your game, this isn't all that's wrong but I'm not paid like Gordon Ramsay to fix hospitality failures.
The resort is well positioned for a night when exploring the Catlins. It had a well equipped kitchen for self catering. Suited us well for a 1 night stay.
There was no couch in the lounge area, as most space occupied by 2 single beds. We could not get any reception from TV - we did not seek help from reception as we only realised after hours, so it may have been resolvable.
Good location right near Mcclean Falls and Cathedral caves, clean, friendly staff
All good. Needs a little updating maybe
Clean, comfortable room. Bar/restaurant had a good selection of meals and beers. Check opening times as they tend to close quite early and there aren’t many other food options in the area
Location
Uncomfortable bed, small room, shared facilities,
Very good restaurant good size meals but it closes at 7pm
The property is very tied needs doing up
Location a size of the complex. Meals well presented
No water pressure in the shower. Cold shower each time. Room smells. Most expensive drinks charged. Phone etiquette was very poor. Pool table very poor conditional
Location is good, near McLean Falls.
Not a resort, more a camp ground with chalets and units. Needs an upgrade and the dirty shower curtain and dish brush definitely need replacing.
