- Amazing place to stay in Matera! Super great communication leading up to our trip. The hotel set us up with parking out of town with a ride directly to the hotel, which is in the Sassi. Our cave room was fantastic. Breakfast was great. The hotel made us dinner reservations both evenings at great restaurants. Super central location to walk anywhere in the Sassi and to do the hike across the bridge to the caves.
- The location was best in the city! The room was very nice with ample space
- Best location in the city. Room had an ample space. Staff were incredibly helpful and nice.
Cons -
- The shower sprays water beyond the shower
- The shower sprayed way beyond the area in the shower and had to put towels to damn it up
- Difficult to find hotel walking from garage.

What a stunning place! Our room was inside the cave. The bed was atop a plexiglass floor above the cave which was lit from below. The room was extremely spacious, light and airy. We were able to enjoy the patio area for a drink alfresco even on a cool night with the stunning sight of Matera right outside of our door.
The cave room was very special, impressive design! Location is fantastic, great helpful staff! The views and the place is magical! The second night, we stayed in a regular room which cost a little less, as the cave room wasn’t available. That room was significantly less impressive but had windows, so overall we had a great stay.
Good location, amazing staff and bedroom a so confortable
Best location, view from cave mountain and old city
Lovely light filled room, very comfortable. Great views and excellent food at the Crialoss cafe above . Excellent staff at reception. Good communication about parking
Need to go outside to get to restaurant
Christine, the receptionist, encouraged us to see a 30 minute movie about the city before we did much touring. It was SO worth it and made us appreciate even more our decision to visit Matara. Christine was incredibily helpful in giving us recommendations and making reservations. Our "cave" accommodations were extremely spacious, comfortable, and clean. One of the most intriguing places we stayed. The delicious cold breakfast was served at the tapas bar next door. It was included in the room rate.
Anyone looking for a hot breakfast would need to seek out one of the nearby restaurants. However, the cold offerings at Palazzo Deglli Abati were substantial with many healthy choices.
Spending two nights in an upscale cave with the most incredible bathroom and hydro shower was an unbelievable experience.
Absolutely nothing
Setting was lovely.
No heat. Floor was very rough to walk on. We had to carry our own bags up some steep stone stairs which was a little dangerous and difficult for an older couple.
It was a nice room well put together but the living conditions were in my opinion not optimal. Airflow / Oxygenation balance with dehumidification were not comfortable. The Staff were incredible; Christina and Antonella were great they helped us with booking at restaurants and were very helpful, friendly and outstanding in their communications.
The professional dehumidifier which we didn’t know existed until we got in the room; took all of the moisture out of the room which there was not much moisture to begin with since we are not at the sea. Also the air conditioning was either too cold or too hot. The room had 1 window; but they were sealed shut. As a result one developed a dry cough due to these conditions sleeping in a cave with no airflow. We were coughing the whole night. The dehumidifier also came on its own for hours and was loud. The A/C we wanted to put on low and not have constant blowing is Air on Automatic but was it was locked by the hotel. So after 2 days in these conditions is like on the plane for 12 hours flight. The air is very dry and your airways are irritated. You feel unrested. And have respiratory problems. On top of that I was recovering from another illness of food poisoning from a previous Hotel stay elsewhere; which made everything feel worse. Secondly our room was at the bottom of the stairs to the bistro and people were constantly coming and going and congregating in from or near the room door so you had no real privacy unless on Monday when the bistro is closed. Even though the bistro waitresses tried telling the customers waiting for tables not to stand in the space where the rooms are located or at the bottom of the stairs; when it gets busy it’s out of control. People do what they want. Too much traffic. People just come to take photos with their families and friends and leave.
Christina was AMAZING!!! This was my 2nd time staying here and I’d do it again! The location is perfect with views that will leave you breathless
Leaving ?????
Great hotel in a special place with excellent staff. Our cave suite Sapuan was totally unique but modern and hip with a fantastic view of Sasso Barisano. Really appreciated the hotel's communication prior to our arrival. We fully understood our 4 parking options, and the walking directions provided were super detailed and accurate. We ended up getting lucky and found a free street parking spot about a 3 minute walk from the hotel. Try to find parking on Via Gian Battista Ventisuglia if you can! Overall an outstanding stay, and a special thanks to Cristina for two awesome restaurant recommendations.
Loved everything about Palazzo degli Abati & Matera. Just wish we'd stayed at least one more night.
The staff were friendly, warm, and informative, which made us feel very welcome throughout our stay. While we weren’t able to book a cave room, our suite was lovely, spacious, and very comfortable. The location was perfect — within easy walking distance to all areas of the old town. Fantastic views from entire property!Breakfast was a real highlight, exceeding our expectations with both quality and variety.Overall, a wonderful stay!
A little difficult to locate at first, even with clear directions, but absolutely worth it in the end!
Beautiful room, I love the attention to detail. Wonderful staff, Cristina and Antonella were very sweet and helpful. Would definitely return.
can’t think of anything!
The staff were so helpful and could not do enough to help us. We had a breakdown in our hire car and they were so helpful trying to rejig our tours etc. The accommodation overall was wonderful. The bed was so comfortable and having the cafe onsite with restaurants so close by was fantastic. The views from the terrace were exceptional as was the hospitality. I would not hesitate to recommend it.
breakfast, location, room
I should have thought about height of cave and my tall husband; it was lovely and we both liked it
