    Pros +

    • The staff were particularly helpful, kind and friendly. A great stay but the staff made it a step above. Breakfasts were great too!
    • The hotel was great the location fabulous but you have to carry your luggage for 400 m on ancient pavement with lots of steps. The staff was very gentle and helpful
    • We liked the location being in Matera city center. It's one of the cave dwellings. The breakfast was good. The staff were very nice and helpful. I'd go back just for the helpful people.

    Cons -

    • The fact that they say that they have parking which is not so right . The breakfast could be better
    • The room size was small. There was a leak in the bathroom sink, but that wasn't an issue except that stuff got wet. The room was non-smoking, but most people would smoke just outside the window.
    • Absolutely nothing - property exceeded expectations

This was probably the coolest property we’ve ever stayed in. We felt like we were waking up in a castle. Matera is a very special place and this hotel allowed us to feel like we were living among the rocks of Matera. The staff was so friendly and helpful.

Such fun unique rooms. The view from the front of the hotel is stunning! Great location not too far from parking, maybe like an 8 minute walk.

Wish breakfast started a little bit earlier since we like to get an early start to the day to beat the heat and the crowds.

This "room" is beyond description. It's basically part of an old church (800 AD to the late 1600s) and your bed is located in one of the apses with a very high ceiling. It's all stone/rock and the room is exceptionally silent. On the second "floor"/mezzanine in the room there is a huge jacuzzi with a light show. There is also a terrace (which you reach by climbing out an old window-turned-door and with a fantastic view of the cathedral. The room is very clean and there is a small minibar. Breakfast is served in the main church building and is adequate. This room cannot be compared to anything we have ever seen and is perfect for romantically oriented couples! Since Matera is very hilly we asked for a ported to carry our luggage to and from the hotel from and to our taxi (we arrived by bus). The staff was very helpful.

Being an old church the room is very humid, although there is a dehumidifier available. Wifi in the room was basically non-existent so we had to do our browsing in the hotel reception (a few meters away). The room is also very sandy, and whatever you touched got (a little) sandy. But this is a small price to pay for the unique experience this room offers!

I loved this place. Probably the smallest room I've ever stayed in, but very beautifully designed and appointed. The location was fantastic, with nice views and a pleasant and helpful staff, very classy lobby and a nice breakfast. Would definitely stay again.

It is important to be aware that no matter where you stay in Matera, you are going to have to do some walking and climbing with your bags ... this hotel is no different in that respect. The room was very small and there was really no place to put my bag or hang or unpack clothes. The shower was a bit small and would not be comfortable for a larger person, but this was just my room which was for a single traveler.

The hotel was AMAZING from the moment we stepped on to the property; from the view, the friendly staff and the huge selection of breakfast foods..

Beautiful hotel in good location. Staff were wonderful. Clean and very cute very good breakfast

You definitely need porter to carry your luggage to and from parking but it was very reasonable.

The hotel is in the heart of the Sassi. Great atmosphere, beautiful setting. We had a lovely bathroom, but the lay-out of our room was not user-friendly.

We were in the 'little room' with the steep wooden staircase (slightly broader than a step ladder) and the trap door. No where to sit, only a matress on the floor. Limited ventilation.

The room is spacious and is nice. Bed was very comfy and breakfast was good.

    1. It has a nice tub, however, they don't have enough hot water capacity for us to enjoy the tub as the water turns cold before it can even reach the water level we needed. Shower hot water was out because we had tried to fill the tub. 2. The room is not sound proof so when people are talking outside of our guest rooms you can hear them. The worse is on our 2nd night, there were a bunch of obnoxious American tourists who were rude and did not care that it was midnight to 2 am that they were loud and partying across from us at Cave hotel Sassi. They were out in their balcony and being rude. My husband went there to tell them to lower their voice but they did not care and got even louder. Had our rooms been more sound proof, it would have not been that bad. We did not sleep that night.

Very cool property in a cave like room. Built in a 13th century church which is super neat! The room was beautiful and good location!

There was no AC and it was a little warm, but nothing uncomfortable as we stayed in late April. But just something to know for if you’re booking in the hotter months as this is something we have to consider while traveling with a baby.

    Beautiful spacious

Walk to the hotel on cobblestone streets - a shuttle/porter service would have been helpful.

Exceptional setting with an amazing view from the balcony. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. Perfect location for exploring the Sassi area, close to many restaurants and the train station.

We loved our stay in L’hotel in Pietra. The room was spacious, tidy and clean. The hotel staff were exceptional and accommodating and we can’t thank them enough. Coming from overseas I sent a lot of questions and each were responded quickly. Roberto was able to locate a private driver to assist us in our next destination all pre arranged before we arrived. I highly recommend this hotel as all our needs plus more were met. Breakfast was sufficient with variety. Matera is an experience you have to visit.

Wonderful location close to the heart of the town, with a great view from our room. The people were very friendly and helpful. The room was comfortable and a great quality bathroom too. A little gem. There was a good selection of food at breakfast too.

We love the Hotel in Pietra, especially our room which is the one with the terrace which turns out to be in the location of the old bell tower, The views from it were spectacular, day & night! The staff was wonderful and the breakfast outstanding. Matera is beautiful. Hotel di Pietra is where to stay!

    We liked everything!
