- Unique experience to sleep inside a cave. Amazing how everything has been built to maintain the true nature of the caves. Very helpful staff.
- An amazing project, and more amazing place, the cave was huge, comfy, much more then we expected The breakfast was sooo good fresh homemade pastries , fresh cheese , really everything you can ask for
- Epic experience living comfortably in an ancient cave system! Staff belong nice!!
Cons -
- Must be part billygoat so not for people who are not good with lots of steps! We had no problem at age 63
- If there was any way they could have a pool that would be the only think that would make it perfect!
- Parking is organized at a third party location out of the ZTL zone, with direct shuttle to Sextantio (most expensive parking in all of Europe, 40 euro/day). Do not expect courtesy from the parking staff, none speak English and that would not have been a problem if they didn't also behave rudely upon arrival, ignoring our questions and shouting; when reported to Sextantio, their behavior completely changed at departure (suddenly polite, but you could sense the sarcasm).

Historic; clean; spacious; private; great location; very comfortable bed and huge bathroom.
One of the most unique properties I have ever stayed in. Simply magical, our room was a grotto cave fixed with all the modern conveniences. Close to everything in old town Matera. Pricey but worth every penny!
Excellent location. Great breakfast. Comfortable rooms.
Amazingly gorgeous. Friendly staff. Absolutely incredible attention to detail. Breakfast buffet was outstanding!

LOOK NO FURTHER, BOOK NOW! Absolutely exceptional location, accommodation AND staff. Walking distance to the historical center of the stunning Matera, these incredible caves capturing every aspect of their forgotten charm also offer the luxury of every modern amenity one may need. Such a unique experience worth every penny: from the incredible courtesy of Pasquale from the front desk (taking care of us as if we were the only guests, bringing coffee for my parents' super early mornings, making restaurant reservations and ensuring parking transfers), to the kind bell boys carrying very heavy luggage up long & cumbersome stairs, to the very rich breakfast in an old cave church, the housekeeping 2x/day bringing fresh fruit and water into the room, the bar staff still serving us drinks after a long journey even though it was officially after hours or the therapists offering 1h massages in the intimacy of your own cave. We were very delighted with the time spent here and would come back any time!

This excellent hotel, the environment, view, food and staff member, Pasquale, made this hotel clearly the best on our two and a half weeks in Italy. Matera is an unusual and exceptional location, replete with incredible churches, ancient history, and a more recent historic past- and this hotel, built into one of its notorious caves, was beautifully appointed. Literie was amazing, comfortable, and luxurious. Welcomed with lovely bottle of wine, fresh fruits. View from the bed to the open canyon with post card beauty made us not want to leave the room. AC was OK but probably needs a boost considering the unrelenting heat. The breakfast-in all travels in US, Europe and Central/S American, have never enjoyed such a sumptuous banquet-tables overflowing with fresh fruits, freshly squeezed juices, home-baked goods, meats and cheese and anything else you wanted after. Unreal and we don't even EAT breakfast!!! Could not resist!! Lovely cocktail hour overlooking the canyon as well. Just a spectacular experience all around. And-Pasquale-equally exceptional-years of experience in hospitality and he made the visit SPECIAL...arranged a meal at one of the best restaurants we enjoyed in Italy and located and purchased a festive table cloth from a local restaurant just for me and mailed it to me at my convenience. Will cherish forever and think of him and this magnificent place when we use it. Matera and this hotel truly a must on a visit to Italy.
MATERA WAS HOT, HOT, HOT. WOULD NEVER VISIT SOUTHERN ITALY AGAIN IN SUMMER. SCARY, TRIPLE DIGIT FARENHEIT DEATH VALLEY LIKE HEAT...AS BAD IF NOT WORSE THAN AMERICAN SW IN SUMMER. JUST PLAN AN EARLIER VISIT-IT'S WORTH THE TRIP OCTOBER-MAY, TOO HOT AFTER.
Beautiful cave like room…very authentic Spacious with candles every where
Not one place to have a comfortable seat!, while everything was very authentic..this was carried to an extreme. We did not expect this. A couple of comfortable chairs in the room with a functional table would have made all the difference
The location was great! The rooms and view are beyond amazing. The breakfast cave is so cool. L
Sensational location, one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever stayed. Matera is stunning but their spot, with the views out into the national park, truly special The staff are superb and incredibly attentive and kind. They could not have been more accommodating especially when we had an issue with our room. Design is gorgeous throughout, furnishing comfy, the whole place is a dream aesthetically speaking You feel good because by staying there you’re also preserving amazing history - the hotel is a conservation project
We got a bit unlucky with our room, 3, which was right next to reception and also a very loud ventilation device for the whole hotel. We moved after the first night because it was keeping us awake. Might not be a problem for everyone but was for us The breakfast is excellent, but the system with coffee and juice puts unnecessary pressure on the staff so they kept forgetting things or making mistakes. They insist on making every cup of coffee for you individually so it takes ages when it’s busy. Doesn’t make sense. They also blend all the juice fresh which is lovely but again takes forever and they forgot ours twice because they were overwhelmed.
Rooms were very comfortable. Breakfast was very good. Staff were excellent and very responsive.
Booked this as a fancier stay as part of our wider Italy trip and it didn't disappoint! Check in was a breeze, with a good tour and explanation of the site (a prior monastery!). Our room was impressive, set within a cave, very cosy and romantic with lots of candles. I suppose that the rooms differ greatly but we were thrilled with ours. Breakfast was incredible set within their candlelit restaurant, lots of variety of hot and cold foods, fruits and cakes. Location wise it had impressive views over the valley and was down the road from a number of great restaurants and cafes. As with any location in Matera, do expect a lot of steps!
Bed was a little hard, but we found that for all of the beds we stayed in in Italy.
Charming rooms, you feel very cozy. Great food quality and kind staff.
The most incredible experience from start to finish. A warm welcome from friendly people before leading us to our own special cave for the night. This was incredibly romantic and everything was included. There was even power points and WiFi but the candles offered a much nicer glow. The breakfast was exceptional too with lots of fresh produce, delicious cakes, and a wonderful atmosphere. If ever we return to Matera we would come back here, thank you for everything.
If I could give 100 stars I would. Our expectations were exceeded in every way possible. From check-in being a breeze, to the staff taking note of a message I had sent and wishing my Father happy birthday, to upgraded rooms for the occasion, everything was perfect. They shared the incredible history of the hotel and the property did an exquisite job rennovating the location to maintain its original features. Any question or ask that we had they answered immediately. The rooms were gorgeous, the baths were luxurious and all of the products on site were so nice. We booked the private dinner option and it was out of this world. The food was exquisite and the venue was remarkable. They went so out of their way to make our stay beyond what we could have ever expected. My only regret was not staying longer!
Beautiful rooms and property in a stunning location. Staff were great, food perfect and would recommend to everyone.
This is not a hotel stay it’s a cultural experience not to be missed. The welcome was wonderful and the introduction to our beautiful candlelit room and the rock church was simply magical. The bed was comfortable and the room was quiet offering a great sleep. The breakfast was unbelievable, so beautifully presented , such variety and so delicious. Definitely recommend.
OMG - one of the nicest places I have ever stayed. The large apartment, with its sunken bath, large bed and beautiful candles was so romantic - pity I was also travelling with my kids! I would return here in a heartbeat - such an amazing place.
