    Pros +

    • We loved the location, inside the old UNESCO-Heritage designation. We walked everywhere, within the old city. Also the friendliness, helpfulness of the staff. We came during the January off-season, so breakfast diversity varied with the number of guests, but was generally excellent. and crowds were minimal. Filtered water was available all the time. Our room was hollowed out into the rock, with a spectacular view if we climbed to the sitting area. Every room was different because of the unique topography. We're seniors, and recommend a walking stick for the marvelous cobbles and slippery-if-wet stones.
    • I liked the location, I had a room right in the heart of Matera cave dwellings and the view from the windows on an evening Matera glowing with lights were magical. Staff were helpful and gave me a free map of navigating around and made some hot tea (after a long walk around on a chilly night it is truly appreciated). It had comfy lights around the room, and a good radiator next to a bed to make the room temperature pleasant. Checkout was quick, maybe because I was in rush for my bus, I've just submitted the keys.
    • Fantastic staff. Spacious room . Great view from our room. It is one of a kind experience within a UNESCO world heritage site.

    Cons -

    • No complaints - ZERO. We stored our car in a nearby pay-garage as recommended. Directions to drop off luggage were provided; a hotel colleague did meet us to help navigate and carry, and then we dropped the car. Confusing at first, but clear once we had telephoned the hotel and gotten encouragement. Total experience rates a full 5-stars.
    • In short, it is pricey, and I don't think is worth the price (around $90 USD with city tax as of December 2025).The room while was maintained and had plenty of clean towels and a seemingly fresh bedding, somehow had a single slipper (not mine!) left underneath my bed. Also somewhere around the corners it wasn't clean enough. But the biggest setback was when I entered the room - it turned out to look differently from the original one I booked 3-5 weeks before, even though it had all the facilities listed there. And then once I checked with my booking, the pictures there were changed as well. The walls were different and it looked more like a normal room rather than a Sassi cave (which I signed up for). Also, my room had 3 large full-sized mirrors (one on the wall facing the door, and two embedded into the bathroom door (on both sides) with one facing the bed, which made me wonder why so many in a small room like mine. That's not a complaint, just something a cautious traveller takes a note of. Also, the minibar was not free, and I paid for a beer on my checkout, but it is okay. Last but not least, there were no iternal locks on the doors, which is important for solo female travellers staying in single rooms somewhere at the top of Matera cave dwellings.

Very friendly staff, beautiful views, tasty melon and pineapple for breakfast, peaceful area

Although we booked a room with queen bed we got linked twin beds, and they were separating during the night. The room was very clean, but they used too much chlorine and we had to go for a long walk to let the room air out. I understand it may be obligatory to keep the limestone caves in good condition, just let the staff know to open the windows before You check-in.

I think this hotel is the best choice for staying in Sassi Matera. It has the best location and the most beautiful view. We were able to walk everywhere in the old city, and from our room we had an amazing view. Breakfast was also excellent.”

The views. The room was very spartan and small but it was fine and very clean. However it was really poorly isolated. The door to the small terrace didn’t properly closed and allowed cold and much noise to enter in the night. There were no blankets and we had to use the bathroom towels over the bed as it was quite chilli (september). But the worst was a running motor somewhere below the room which was all night running and which made sleeping impossible.

    Noise and bad isolation

    Nothing was unlikable.

Location is excellent, we could see most of Sassi from our windows, simply a breathtaking view! Close to various points in Sassi, 10-15 minutes walking from main attractions. The room was small, but cozy and more than enough for a short stay. The room has good AC, so even the higher temperatures from outside should not cause any issues inside.Breakfast was good and varied, self-serving buffet with a variety of options. Staff was very welcoming and helpful, provided us directions and recommended us some good restaurants.

A bit hard to find just by following navigation apps, as the signal is not always the best there.Difficult to find parking nearby due to ZTL (Zone Traffic Limited) and we had to walk with our baggage from where we parked to the hotel.

We had a wonderful stay here! The room location was a positive surprise and the view was quite pretty from our window, but also the hotel's lobby area overlooking the city. You are staying in a cave-like room, so you need to be tollerant of door sizes, cobblestone road and some stairs towards the hotel, but it's an enjoyable experience for older people too, since I was there with an older family member!

Great location. Room was charming and unique.

We were in a junior suite carved into the rock. The humidity in the room was high. A dehumidifier would have helped.

Staff not very helpful Breakfast is ok

Loved the view right outside the room. Room was very big and clean. Hotel staff was extremely nice and helpful..

If you’re traveling with a toddler and a baby buggy, please do note there are too many steps to climb so travel with a lightweight baby buggy.

This hotel room was honestly one of a kind, it’s built inside a grotto, which made it super unique and cozy. The location is incredible, with the most amazing view of Matera! The homemade breakfast was absolutely delicious, and the staff were all so kind and helpful throughout the stay. Definitely one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever stayed in, highly recommend!

Typical residence in the heart of the Sassi. A experience that needs to be lived

The sofa was pretty uncomfortable to sleep on.

Amazing views, unique accommodation structure (inside cave), great location, nice breakfast. Terrific host upon arrival … bending over backwards to help us and be sure we were happy.

Female reception on day of departure … overwhelmed and not very personable. Neglected to relay message to our next hotel, as she said she would do.

    8ElenaPosted on: 4-23-2025

The location of the hotel is excellent!

the room itself was pretty basic, not really clean and the humidity was high.

    10JamesPosted on: 4-17-2025

The location was excellent. A short walk from the parking garage that the hotel recommended. Excellent breakfast, comfy beds, sleeping in a cave, super experience!

We thought the property was perfect. Google Maps tries to take the long way to hotel but there is shorter walk from the garage.

Lovely setting right in old Matera, very nice room, sumptuous buffet breakfast, nice cubby with a table and chair (and a view). Staff very helpful. Great way to experience Matera, we would return to the Hotel Sassi.
