Pros +
- Very spacious room, great breakfast, free parking, unique hotel in a old hospital
- Big room, clean and very comfortable. The building is very beautiful and the staff very friendly. It was a good thing that they had some special treats for my dog. Great location with a good parking lot.
- It is a Beautiful old converted hospital adjacent to the wonderful old town. The town was one of my favorites we visited in Portugal.
Cons -
- The sauna was out of service. The room was not very well acoustic isolated, I could hear the voices from the room next door (although it was my mother in law and she speaks a little loud). I believe the hotel could provide some slippers and robes for the guests to use the pool.
- The check in girl was not very friendly probably due to a poor grasp of English. The bar did not have an attendant while we waited for quite a while. We skipped night cap drinks. Also it became very hot inside the room during the night.
- outdated interior design, heavy wood everywhere, dumb "smart tv" that couldn't let go of a private YOUTUBE account registered by a prior client. parking lot is behind the building, with gravel. make sure to drop suitcases in front of front-gates otherwise you'll destroy your luggage. dinner is overpriced compared to regional and even national prices for similar foods. Dining room decoration clashes with the rest of the building - as ultra modern, in a hotel that still has 80's vibes in the rest of it. We ate better and cheaper in Lisbon restaurants where we needed to book days in advance. Should have tried to find a local restaurant. Front desk is pleasant, but not too efficient. Arm yourself with patience if someone is there before you.

nice terrace, good bathroom, close to downtown - where we did a nice stroll late at night to get some ice-cream - totally safe. impressive building, with an impressive lobby

Great location with only a 5 minute walk to the historic city center. Plenty of parking and an outdoor swimming pool (was still open during our stay in early October). Spacious room and very comfortable bed. Our room was on the top floor (4th) which had a good size balcony/terrace with two chairs and a great view (though lower floor rooms appear to only have very narrow balconies with no sitting space). Wonderful breakfast and friendly staff.
The hotel's indoor swimming pool is very small and is only about 1 foot deep. Shouldn't really be classified as a pool.
Renovated historic building in a great location. Friendly and helpful staff. We could start lunch at 2.50 pm even though the kitchen closes at 3 pm, and the food was good. Room was large, quiet, and well laid out.
The building has been leased to the Pestana group to operate as a hotel for 30 years, it is now in the second half of the lease, and the building is looking a little tired. No porter, so I borrowed the luggage trolley. WiFi is patchy. One bath robe in the room had a bad stain, and was exchanged.
The building is beautiful, well maintained and the room was lovely. Most of the bar staff was helpful and nice, we had to dine exclusively in the bar area. I stayed at the hotel because it is historic, 4 star and pet friendly.
First, it was very hot, 38-40c. The hotel is dog "friendly" so my dog is allowed to stay in our room but nowhere else! We paid 180 euros for a nice room and 35 euros for my dog. When I checked in I signed a typical agreement for her. She was not to be in the room alone, no problem, I would never leave her in the room. Then I asked about her being allowed in the lobby, NO. Breakfast room, NO. Common areas, NO. and outside, NO. essentially the staff offered to waive the room service fee so we could just stay in our room. I persuaded the bar staff to let us dine outside at tables near the pool and grass after one of the staff member said, "not possible" to dine outside with her. So I told them I was dining outside, with a menu and drinks. I am unhappy, Pestana needs to be more like Octant, Melia, NH Collections and other 4 and 5 star hotels in accomodating guests with pets.
We happened to arrive the day of the Spain/Portugal electrical blackout and the hotel had generator power, so although the stores and restaurants were closed, our dinner reservations (excellent dinner and service) saved the day. Very beautiful facility with a huge covered open seating area in what must have been a courtyard.
Great value for money. Interesting historic building, kids activities and bouncy castle for kids over the holidays
Very little I didn’t like.
Peaceful luxury experience
Small detail that makes the experience 99% great and not 100% > Tv channels were not working very well, the connection wasn't good, image was lagging a lot
Great location, excellent service, beautifully renovated historical building and very spacious elegant rooms with view to the woods. The hotel has both an outdoor pool and a heated indoor pool. For the indoor one you will have to book a slot, as the pool is rather small. Our kids loved it all the same. The spa has a great wet and dry sauna. Message costs approximately 50-40€ but we didn't have a chance to try it.Staff was super nice and helpful - made our stay! Would love to come back again.
No coffee in the rooms, HUGE disappointment that there was tea but no coffee. Loved the check in staff, bartender was lacking customer service skills waited for quite some time for service as he was busy talking to the reception desk , literally had to ask if there was a bartender available . Great food in the restaurant and great restaurant staff. I would return for the restaurant alone.
Staff was amazing. Beautiful interior. Refreshing indoor pool- small but refreshing. Super clean.
I loved everything.
large, clean room, comfortable beds. Great common spaces, lounge, bar
breakfast had lots of variety but short on fruit, choice of juices but not made from fresh fruit, coffee from automatic machines not very good
Exemplary architectural reno. Sober yet sophisticated rooms, great public areas, and friendly staff.
There's a store with select wines, chocolates, and some handcrafts, but it seems poorly curated, which made it feel like an after-thought.
The staff is great, motivated and helpful. There was a concert in the hall and the music could be heard in the room. LOUD. I've never seen anything like that in a hotel before. Everything else is typical of Pestana group hotels - too expensive for what it is.
Great room, comfortable with a deck that overlooked parts of the city and Mountain views
High quality standard, nice Pousada. Room space good, breakfast nice.
Needs more attention in cleanness, was better in the past, some laisser aller
Dog friendly, large bed and restaurant food
It was expensive and €30 euros per dog is excessive for our very small pets (though the box of treats was a lovely touch)
The castle-like hotel is located in the center of the quiet city and on a higher spot. The internal courtyard looks not only vintage but also elegant. The room is spacious and comfortable. The breakfast is superb, with several special dishes with either local character or the royal tradition.
The indoor swimming pool is not convenient enough.
