Normally I don't like self check-in, but this was done extremely well.

I have a good memory for numbers, but if I didn't, I could see myself forgetting my room PIN code if I used the shower. And with no staff at reception, I don't know what I would have done. And everyone arriving should be told to go see the penguins!

As I was leaving I realized there’s a massage chair in the living room. Don’t miss it! The views are stunning. House is basic, but better than expected. Nice common spaces. Excellent location for penguins and historic district.

No staff on site it’s all virtual and electronic keypads. My bedroom smelled faintly of smoke

The location of the property is incredible, wonderful view to the heritage district and the ocean. The rooms were nicely spaced out, the common areas were very comfortable. The kitchen was clean and well stocked. The beds were comfy and private with sliding curtains. Lots of little comforting details around that made if feel more like a home than a hostel - very easy space to spend time in.

There is honestly nothing that I didn’t like about the property.

Lovely sea view from our room ("Garden view") as well as the lounge and dining room.Easy walking distance to shops and Steam Punk district.Well appointed kitchen.

Never met any staff. Walls were thin (old property).Onsite parking was unclear, though there was plenty of street parking.Steep old staircase to access downstairs rooms.

Quick response, extremely patient and friendly customer service. The room is also excellent-clean and comfortable. Highly recommended :)

The location was very good with easy walking access to the town and things to see and easy on street parking. Common areas were very spacious and very homey, lots of attention to detail. Room was also large and comfy

Bathrooms are small, one person at a time, and right next to room so you hear everything. People were very good about being quiet tho. Electric blanket did not work and room was chilly but that’s pretty standard for NZ in the winter it seems

It was pretty cold in the house and bathrooms but the rooms had heaters.

Such a cute place! Felt very homey and everyone I met was super kind. Curtains on the beds offered privacy. Great views from the lounge areas. Sink provided in the room, which was nice. Plenty of free street parking outside. Lots of free food available in the kitchen.

Really cosy hostel with a homey feel. Just one dorm room and some private rooms so you get to know other travellers staying there. It is a remote check in via an app which isn't ideal but as it’s such a small place it doesn’t really make sense for a host to be on site all the time. Well equipped kitchen and comfy beds with lights/charging ports etc. lovely view from the kitchen and living room in the morning, and good location close to town and the harbour, with plenty of free parking on the street outside.

The ladders aren’t secured to the beds which I thought was a bit of a hazard

Walking distance to the Victorian precinct, coffee shops and the penguins, super comfortable beds, warm blankets. Great idea having the sharing fridge plus the communal drinks and cereal.

Good location, clean and tidy room and common facilties

No soundproofing between rooms, could hear a lot of neighbour's conversation, even when they weren't being particularly loud

Location is great! Tidy space and clear instructions around. Great facilities like massage chair in the lounge / common area, board games, books, a garden etc :) Love how the property was penguin themed.

Unfortunately there was a misunderstanding, we arrived to fine the code to our room had been sent to our Americian phone which was not working here in NZ. We were shown around by someone who was staying here but as their was not anyone who could help us with the code, were unable to stay there.

A beautifully decorated double bedroom. Clean & classy, in keeping with Oamaru's Victorian town. Stunning gardens with unusual plants.

Easy checkin . Lovely space. Well equiped kitchen and beautiful views.For a hostel hard to fault.

The kitchen was well equipped and we had some great conversations with other backpackers there.

We didn't realise that the hostel was un-staffed. When we got there on Saturday 22nd. Marchwe found this GOKI lock on the front door. The instructions said enter your PIN. We had a PIN from the booking receipt received on Tuesday 18th. March and we tried that 4 times and it failed to every time. We rang the telephone number and were told that we had the wrong PIN, and were given another one that worked. Since getting back from Oamaru I found 4 emails sent on Friday night one of which had the right PIN. The booking receipt should have said check your email on Friday for the PIN.

Amazingly cute little place with a penguin theme. Generous common areas, both inside and out to be used by all freely. I slept in the dorm room and it was big, fresh and the beds were very comfy. The service was great and they answered quickly when I had a small issue. I could even dry my laundry out in their garden! A place with everything you could possibly need from hairdryer and schampoo to borrow to even complimentary cookies to take with coffee.

Good communication and easy no key entry/exit. Great shower.
