Pros +
- Very conveniently located, close to walled city and castle. People are nice.
- Location is good
- The hotel itself is beautiful, we really liked the little pool downstairs and the fact that the hotel is located near almost everything. We could walk to a majority of places, if not, we took an Uber which didn't cost that much. The Wi-Fi worked great too! Furthermore, the staff was very friendly, and helpful, and our room comfortable. We needed to print out a document and the staff helped us with that immediately. We had some issues with the air conditioner, but the moment we asked about it, the staff did their best to fix it (it was a bit of a noisy air conditioner, but that was fine). Overall, we had a very good stay at Akel house hotel.
Cons -
- Not enough hot water for shower. Staff do not speak English.
- Breakfast was OK...Coffee was horrible...Shower did not have hot water all the time..Staff is good, especially Joe..Hotel is dated and rooms need to be made nicer ...The room should have a small table and 2 chairs..Alsoa side table between 2 beds.
- There wasn't really much we disliked about our stay, I just have some suggestions:The breakfast was nice, but maybe a suggestion to have some more breakfast options? We had eggs and bread/arepa with fruit for breakfast every day, for 8 days. And maybe another suggestion to have a rack in the room for wet towels? There wasn't really a rack to hang our towels and wet clothes (after a beach trip, for example). We were with 3 in the room, and we had to find random places in the room to hang our wet clothes/towels. That's all!

The location. Lili's breakfast. The small pool. The comfortable beds.
The night audit guy.
Room was big enough, it had a chair and desk in case you need to do some work. The breakfast was good and the staff was friendly. I consider this hotel is well located.
Location is great, rooms are clean and fresh with AC and ventilator.
The rooms can be a bit noisy due to open conduits in the bathrooms and some bedroom windows left ajar, making it easy to hear neighboring guests.
Extremely well located and very authentic style, great breakfast and service and really lovely staff. The room is also really spacious, we felt really safe as there is 24 hour reception and they keep the front door locked, so you feel really secure in the property and with your belongings too.
There were some holes in our bathroom, I think this is because of the authentic lay out and style but it meant there were a few little ants - but nothing we haven’t been used to.
The hotel is in Getsemaní, right in the middle of the action with almost everything in walking distance.
The pool was next to my room, so I heard everything if there were people.
The front desk attendant was so hostile and rude ! He threatens to call the cops and get us out
The first room we got was not what we expected at all, but when we talked to the front desk about it they were incredibly understanding and were able to give us a different one, even giving us the option to pick our room. Super helpful and sweet people both at the desk and cleaning the rooms/serving breakfast. There was also someone at the desk 24/7 which was really nice. The hotel itself was also in a very good and safe location as it was in walking distance to the main streets of Getsemani (only two blocks away), the old fort (5-10 minute walk), and just a 5 minute walk from the clock tower, but not so much that it was loud. I enjoyed having everything I needed nearby without having to get a taxi or an uber.
Our tv wasn't working our entire stay and the soundproofing within the bathrooms wasn't great. The hotel itself is beautiful, but it needs some regular maintenance. There was a leak in our bathroom ceiling just above our heads whenever we tried using the sink and the room above us had used the shower. I would still stay here again, but I think it was a little bit expensive considering issues like that one.
Location and staff
Everything else? it’s too old, didnt look like in the pictures
Location
A bit dated, paint was coming off on the walls, shower water was lukewarm at best.
Good location for me, easy to find. Staff was fantastic. I stopped by early to leave my luggage (since my plane arrived early and I wanted to walk around), and by the time I came back, they had a room for me (even though it was still not the regular check in time). I had already decided to go on to Santa Marta that evening and not stay the night, and the owner (Alberto Akel) went out of his way to help me get a bus to Santa Marta.
Cant think of anything.
Don’t do it
The pictures do not reflect the property. It’s so dirty and messy everywhere, you wouldn’t dare go into the pool. We found a clump of hair in our bathroom and the towels were all stained. Also, our room was not what we had booked and was an older and different layout. Additionally, we were quite a walk away from the center where everything happens and since we were there during rain season, the whole street walking up to the hotel would flood and we had to walk through puddles of water to get back. Wouldn’t dream of staying here again
Great central location. Lily and Mary were the best! They made breakfast for us and made us feel very welcome. We loved being able to book a shore excursion through the hotel. The room was nice and cool.
Nothing it was great!
Budget hotel . Good, quiet location in Getsemani. Walkable location.
Just the location close to main restaurantes and bars and hot water
Very dated not very clean the room ! It had a bad smell of mould it doesn't look like in the photos and it's definitely not a 3 star hotel. Some areas of the hotel were dirty and not taken care like the terrace for instance.
Good location quiet and nice staff. Good breakfast on the rooftop. Big bedroom and bathroom and comfortable mattress
Swimming on ground floor too close to the bedroom - we were quasi alone but it could be a point when it’s full
The location was fabulous, close to the walled city. Breakfast was simple but very tasty. The breakfast staff was very nice.
So noisy! Colombian drivers use the horn as much as the brakes. It’s on a side street but very little sound insulation.i was exhausted by the time my stay was over. No fault of the hotel but car horns honking all night.right outside the room.
The location was amazing. We truly were in the heart of Getsemani. In addition, the area was very safe for tourists who wanted to walk around and explore. The community is really centered on safety. The breakfast was very simple, but it was nice. It felt like staying at your aunt's house lol.
The room could have honestly been better; we were met with some water issues. However, for the cost we were comfortable.
