    Pros +

    • Great location to Main Street and restaurants, walkable.
    • Great week staying here, we needed to extend our stay and they were very accommodating. Also very helpful providing additional work space, extra parking when available and the owner even gave us a lift when we needed to get down to South Bay. Thanks guys!
    • Nice lady at reception. Loved the spacious unit and the large bathroom. Would be ideal for someone staying longer than one night.

    Cons -

    • Could use a good cleaning.
    • The car parked in front of our unit. We parked in next bay, got squared away and had a cup of coffee, then came out to find two other cars had blocked us in. Waited an hour before one moved so we could go out for dinner.
    • When we arrived at Kaikoura Gateway Motor Lodge, the receptionist was very unfriendly. I had made an honest mistake on my Booking.com reservation by entering 2 adults and 1 child instead of 3 children (ages 10, 8, and 7). However, I had booked a room suitable for 4 people. Instead of understanding, the receptionist implied I was lying and said, “Oh no, something is not right.” She told me that since we were only staying for one night, she would allow us to stay, but I would still need to pay for 2 extra children. I explained that the room was already for 4 people and asked if I could just be charged for 1 child, but she refused, saying it was “not legally right” because I had not declared the correct number of people. Overall, I found this place not family-friendly and disappointing in terms of hospitality.

The room was clean and well presented.

I could smell smoke on my pillow, so I suspect a smoker had used the room before.

Friendly staff. Spacious room. Spa tub

    4DanielPosted on: 4-29-2025

We booked and PAID for a 1 bedroom. They locked off the bedroom because there was a queen bed in the Lounge/living room. They said because there were only 2 of us, we did not get the bedroom. So we had a studio room.

The owner! She lied and said we got a 1 bedroom because there was a bed in the room. SHE ABSOLUTELY REFUSED TO GIVE US A PARTIAL REFUND because we only got a studio.

Clean tidy rooms, fully kitted out, private balcony, perfect for a night or two. Great location near town centre too, really enjoyed my stay, thank you guys!

Friendly staff, close to local restaurants. Clean and tidy

Walls are a bit, thin not sound proof.

Location was perfect. Kaikoura is a delight.

Ants and the spa bath was disabled.

    9KimPosted on: 4-22-2025

Everything was great, they really cared as we were travelling in rough weather and they called to check on us. Really lovely lady

It was just missing a frying pan in the kitchen but we just went and brought one

Quiet, close to town.We cut our stay short due to the poor quality of the room and the owner did refund us one night.

There was a musty smell when we first arrived, we had to air out the room.Black mold on the back of the curtains and in the bathroom, dirty carpet, tap in the spa bath was very loose. Bathroom floor was peeling, towel was stained and there were a lot of ants that we had to keep spraying. Carpark was really tight to navigate.

Big cozy studio room, enough for three of us. Walking distance to town and restaurants by using the walkway on the opposite side of this motel.

    8DonaldPosted on: 4-18-2025

    Very nice handy to town.

Nice unit , traffic noise right through the night.

    8SonyaPosted on: 4-18-2025

Great location and easy walking distance to restaurants and cafes. The room was spacious and clean and was an added bonus to have a spa bath.

Was looking forward to a swim in the pool but it was closed for winter.

    7LouisePosted on: 4-18-2025

    Big room

Awkward parking on site and motel is on the main road so parking offsite is not easy either.

    8CathyPosted on: 4-15-2025

Lovely place to stay, staff really helpful and welcoming. On the edge of Kaikoura on the main road but very quiet and peaceful and an easy walk into town.
