Top Tips
- Book hotels at least 3 to 6 months ahead for October and the Festival Internacional Cervantino to secure rates up to 50% lower than during peak demand. Room prices during the festival can increase by 50-150%. Early reservations also increase availability at major chains and reduce the risk of sold-out dates.
- Arrange airport transfers from Del Bajío International Airport (BJX), located 28-35 km (30-40 minutes) from Guanajuato city center, before arrival. Licensed hotel shuttles or prearranged transfers typically cost MXN 600-900 (about $30-45 USD). This avoids varying taxi pricing and helps support safe arrival, especially after evening flights.
- Many hotels in Centro Histórico are on pedestrian-only streets. Confirm drop-off or porter service with your hotel if arriving by car, as you may need to carry luggage 50-200 meters. Request porter assistance through the hotel’s front desk for a smoother arrival.
- Nightlife noise near Jardín de la Unión can last until 01:30-03:00, especially Thursday to Sunday. Choose an interior patio or higher-floor room to reduce disturbance, and request room location confirmation directly with the hotel.
- Most hotels in the historic center do not have onsite parking. Expect to use offsite secured lots or valet for MXN 100-300 (about $5-15 USD) per night, and confirm if the route to parking involves stairs or uneven cobblestone. This allows better planning for luggage and accessibility.
- If you require step-free access or accessible showers, request written confirmation before arrival, as accessible rooms are uncommon in colonial buildings and many properties do not have elevators. Highlight your specific requirements to ensure your needs are addressed.
- Tap water in Guanajuato is not recommended for drinking. Confirm your hotel provides complimentary bottled water or an in-room filtration system before your stay.
- Carry MXN cash for taxis and local markets, as many places do not accept cards. When using a credit card, decline Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) to avoid a 2-6% markup, and always choose to pay in Mexican Pesos for the most favorable rate.
- Wi-Fi quality at boutique or historic hotels varies from unstable up to 10-30 Mbps. If you need to work remotely, ask for a recent speed test or to be placed in a room away from event spaces to improve connection stability during business hours.
