    Pros +

    • Great location, wonderful, welcoming staff. We were offered an upgrade which was much appreciated. The amenities were great, the buffet breakfast was plentiful and well presented. Lovely location with great restaurants within walking distance.
    • Clean, spacious and great staff
    • great location, modern, nice amenities

    Cons -

    • Dining room
    • Our shower had not been cleaned prior to arrival. There was hair on the walls and floor of the shower
    • The front desk was often crowded and asking a simple question could take several minutes while large groups checked in and out at all times of the day. There seemed to be a separate desk with someone there but at no point did she offer to help anyone. If that was concierge, it would helpful to point that out to guests upon check in.A few gripes: 1. The daily / weekly safe charge. We stayed in 6 hotels all over Portugal and were never once charged to use the safe in the room. For the price of the rooms, I found that absurd and very nickle and dimey. 2. The construction going on around the pool area with extremely loud power tools - just a bummer when you’re trying to relax. Overall, we’d absolutely stay there again and recommend but I do hope they lose the safe charge, it’s ridiculous.

Son emplacement, le buffet déjeuner, la propreté, le service. La terrasse sur le toit était vraiment génial pour relaxer!

The hotel is absolutely beautiful and the location is excellent in terms of walking to beaches, restaurants, cafes, etc close to the hotel and it’s a short tuktuk (highly recommend) or taxi to the city center. The room was perfect with excellent amenities and thoughtful treats. No notes!

The location was good and the room was clean

It was very noisy. Housekeeping moving furniture and talking very loudly to each other starting at 7am and continuing all morning. The last morning I was there, there wasn't even a table to sit at for the breakfast. Way too many people crammed into this hotel in my opinion.

Impeccably clean and really lovely view with side view room

Not property specific, just should have stayed a bit closer to old town…simply personal preference

Breakfast was good. Some baked items just ok taste. Location good but very busy during stay. Appreciated having breakfast available.

Love the cleanness and beautiful hotel decor and ambiance. Also very spacious that doesn’t feel crowded. Staff very professional and friendly. Comfortable and luxurious at the same timeThe Tale restaurant was awesome!Food at pool/bar very good.

The dinner buffet lacks variety, for the price you pay it felt short. And long waits when the dish you want has to be replaced or never replaced.

Room was spacious, hotel has a large space, live music every evening, free shuttle service to funchal available but local buses are also down the road

You need to pay daily to use the safe - which is odd, I have never come across such a scenario in a 4 star hotel. Pool is very narrow so swimning is impossible if there are multiple people. Breakfast was mediocre at best.

The staff were very friendly and the breakfast was nice. The rooms are spacious and clean. It was great for a relaxing disconnect from the day to day.

You had to pay to use the steam and sauna room which was a bit annoying.

Cozy and comfortable hotel , in the suburbs of Funchal

The cleaning services never washed any of the cups or kettlery in the room for 4 nights… the parking in the area around the hotel (public, outside the hotel) can be an issue due to traffic

We had a good one night stay here. They let us check in two hours early as the room was ready. Aside from that, the hotel was very clean, quiet, the beds are very comfy. A lovely view of the sea (we had a side sea room). Nice balcony, would have liked two lounging chairs rather than one. Bathroom fine, some toiletries. Dressing gown and slippers, plus towels for the pool.Easy walking distance into Funchal town, maybe 40 minutes but pretty much all flat. There was a parking garage you need to pay for (no idea if you need to pre book it). We parked in the street behind for free. Some pay and display in front of the hotel too.Overall, would stay here again, thought it was very good value and was quiet!

The inside pool was nice, pretty small (23m maybe). Only downside was the toilets next to the pool smelt strongly of urine so every time you swam to that end of the pool you could smell wee. Outside pool looked nice but it was raining so we couldn't use it.They came to give us complimentary water, wine and cakes but we were asleep. They came into the room anyway despite me saying no, maybe they didn't understand, but that was weird for me. They told me to hang the do not disturb on the door, fair enough, but I did also say no clearly. They could leave it outside the door.

Nice location, really friendly and helpful staff, great breakfast with a lot of options, music every night in the lobby.

Low shower pressure and quite a small TV for the size of the room.

Clean, good location, excellent breakfast, nice swimming pools

Nice location and clean. Breakfast was good

From the pictures it looked like a new build cool designed hotel but it was actually old. Also the average age in the hotel was quite high, I don’t recommend it to young people.

    9JasonPosted on: 4-15-2025

I would highly recommend hotel Alto, the staff, cleanliness and overall stay was great. The beds where by far the best I’ve experienced in a hotel. Breakfast wasn’t the best but it’s grand and I suppose everyone’s different.

Paying for the car park was a bummer

This hotel is very clean and well maintained. Our room was above average size. Breakfast was excellent, lots offered. Staff were friendly and accommodating. Then there is the pool deck offering indoor and outdoor pools, snack bar and sun deck with chairs. Views of Funchal from the sun decks was quite nice. This hotel is truly a gem

You have to pay extra to use the safe in the room. It seemed odd when they bring free fruit and water most days

    8RunePosted on: 4-10-2025

The cleaning staff was excellent. At times the breakfast hall was very crowded, so it is a bit on the small side. This is mostly something that comes up if you have breakfast at the same time as a large group who are going on a morning tourist excursion.
