Pros +
- Location views and good staff excellent breakfast
- The location had amazing views, and was a good location for walking to restaurants nearby. Breakfast had many options. The pools, and welcome snacks and bottle of wine were great.
- Amazing setting right on the water. Great breakfast. Staff made it a special trip.
Cons -
- Outdoor pool not heated
- The beds were extremely uncomfortable, to the point that my body was in pain. I slept on the short couch, that was only slightly softer, for half of the trip. My reservation included daily water (water is very hard to come by at the resort) and I had to ask for it several times and still did not receive it. I was never given a full set of towels except for the first day.
- Food very poor in the buffet for dinner and very average in pool snack bar. Terrible room service, stone cold and a one hour wait. Breakfast ok but coffee poor and no fresh orange juice. Atmosphere in hotel generally cold. Noise from bedroom doors slamming. There was a gala dinner on New Year’s Eve in the main restaurant. There were many guests including myself not attending this dinner however all other restaurants and main bar was shut. Unacceptable not to be able to get a drink and sit in the lobby/main bar as a hotel guest.

Bar cocktails, music and service excellent. Very clean. Rooms have excellent view. Too cold to swim but seawater pools excellent.

Location
Not sure why this is not a 5 star resort. The breakfast is far from a 5 star hotel . The staff is picking up the plates and everything from the breakfast area by 10:15 am/ and the official end of the breakfast is 10:30am. The quality and setup of the food is mediocre at most.
The Staff was fantastic, it was in close proximity to both old & new town & it wasn’t excessively priced. Enjoyed It!
There could be better signage in & around the building as it’s a large facility & the pools could be heated, I thought they were suppose to be!??
Location, ocean front and clean hotel
The food was 2 star… I ordered a hamburger and took a bite it was one of those pre made types which was gray. The snack store had not one healthy option just sugar and chips. Also breakfast buffet was mediocre and should have at least had papayas.
Amazing property, huge with nice accommodations.
The room was out-fashioned, a bit old. AC was not cold enough
Spa, pools and breakfast.
Hotel was too big and spread out. Gym was off site and getting to pool included several elevators
It was clean and had a pool, gorgeous ocean, breakfast was included and nice. Room was nice and clean. I do wish there was more storage for my suitcase so it was not out and messy.
Our room was right over the fitness studio, when we wanted happy hour on our deck there was an extremely LOUD class daily. When I complained, the desk agent showed me the schedule and said it’s only 45 minutes. That was the time we wanted to sit on our balcony and have a pre dinner drink. I would also say it was the first place the staff NEVER greeted us as we entered and exited the facility. It was quite sterile and felt like an all inclusive. I would not stay there again. There were warmer more charming places that would have been more to our liking.
Great location, size & excellent sea view
Pool area bathrooms and shower rooms were in need of an upgrade.
The room has a fantastic view and at good size, that’s about it. It's time to renew all interior items, everything is worn out and it’s not worthy of a five-star hotel.
renew all interior
These points meet the standard: breakfast, bed quality, view, salad buffet, kindness of the service
The Vidamar falls short of its 5* rating in the following areas:The patio furniture needs to be replaced. We've never had to pay extra for the pool area in the spa at a 5* hotel before; the other pool area is a joke. It's difficult to sleep at night here because the room doors slam too loudly. The selection of hot meals in the evening is meager. The elevators are in desperate need of renovation. A concrete desert by the sea. This could also be made more beautiful with plants and a redesign, rather than the plastic loungers that are available. All in all, this wasn't a vacation that lived up to the many excellent reviews. We would definitely choose a different hotel!
Hotel clean and comfortable. We were upgraded to a suite which was lovely. Staff all friendly and helpful. Plenty of sunbeds and nice sea front location.Good food choices for breakfast.
Hotel was very large and had a conference feel to it rather than holiday vibe. Quite a bit of walking between room, restaurant, pool area etc.Evening buffet and the other dining options did not feel 5* quality both in terms of food and venues. We didn't go hungry but there was nothing exciting or with any wow factor.
Fantastic location, spacious room, great view from the room
The experience was mediocre for a 5 star hotel - especially in comparison to the other 5 stars hotels in Funchal. Worst was the food: Some of the meals we had were uneatable, coffee was horrible, food choices for dinner not good. Although having half board, we decided not to come back for dinner after the second day. Interior design was from the 90ies, the room nothing special, mini bar empty. Staff oftentimes not helpful. What a shame: the location and overall setup of the hotel is good - with a makeover and a better hotel operations team this could be a wonderful hotel.
Good hotel, great location, easy for tour pick ups. Views from the sea were also amazing.
They would not fill up the pizza dinner with more pizza, children would be waiting for a long time or even not have pizza at all. Should fix that.
The location is perfect, the pool area excellent and the staff helpful, professional and welcoming. The grounds really make the Hotel with that wonderful green Maderia touch. Interior is spacious and light with lots of interesting areas to wander round. Bedrooms are well equipped, clean and comfortable having your own large balcony is a bonus. Breakfast & Dinner offer lots of choice changing each day. We had a lovely relaxing time and will return.
Only one thing the tea/coffee stations were constantly over worked there needs to be at least one more if not two.
The staff - the lady that made the eggs was fantastic
Very basic room for a 5* dirty curtains were the bin was, chair on the balcony thread bear, coffee & tea facilities in the room poor, the staff washed the cups /glasses in the bathroom sink. We were half board and had to buy a drink before we could get our dinner, which was another £70 when we left (1 drink each a night)
Good location, very good organized restaurants service, never waited for our drinks or to be seated. Various selection of food for breakfast and dinner, fresh made omelette, porridge, bread, Prosecco….fresh selection of fish, meat, seafood, dessert, fruits…. Good value for money. All rooms facing the ocean, free parking.
Not good soundproof between rooms and balconies. If you have children next door, it can get very noisy. Would be reasonable to make an adult only section for the guest without children. The pool bar is not nice, would not recommend to eat there.
Huge hotel, huge room, great view of the see, friendly staff.
The hotel was just a little too big for our taste, very busy with lots of people, the dining room was crowded. The hotel boasts 4 restaurants, but you have to book in advance, and usually, they are fully booked.
