Pros +
- Ambience quieter with seemingly older clients as no kids toys in pool. Outside Breakfast area was magical overlooking the pool and ocean.Choices of restaurants great! The spa pool was warmer on cooler days eventho I used the outdoor spectacular infinity pool almost daily. Rooms large and our room deck overlooked the ocean . Happy hour and nightly entertainment a real bonus. Staff were exceptional!! Bus stop in front of hotel to Funchal. We often walked the 30 min walk. 6k promenade on back of hotel which takes you to a unique fishing village.Walked it often.
- The pool and sea breeze
- It’s a lovely property with a unique garden and grounds. It is in a very nice neighborhood but the hotel is just another resort catering to the masses. It doesn’t really differentiate itself in any way. It is a nice hotel with the same breakfast served in this type of hotel and it is a generic experience.
Cons -
- Unfortunately the spectacular infinity outdoor pool is not heated thus October it was a brave plunge.Unfortunately at check in the beautiful promenade was not brought to our attention thus we discovered through other guests. Wonderful restaurants along the way.
- Charging for any kind of facilities (spa+minigolf+ pool table,, etc ) in addition to the room rate except swimming pools. + the staff don’t smile giving you the (full information) with some kind of grumpy face ?
- I booked an ocean view room and was given a room that if I stood on the balcony and looked around the building I could see the water. This is just shameful. I complained and was moved to a room with a view I expected to have. The hotel says it has parking but in fact, it has a few free spaces and if those are full you have to find other paid parking in the area. Again, shameful.

We had higher expectations, I recommend staying at any other hotel.
Every staff member was rude (at check in and check out). The decorations were 20 years outdated. Maid service was sloppy and inconsiderate. Every single accommodation had an additional secret cost that was not advertised. The power blew on our room on the first night because we used the toaster while the tv was on at the same time. Every hot tub was lukewarm, we thought they were broken.
Breakfast was nice, but long queues if you want to seat outside, however, nicely managed by staff. Room was ok, pool and garden are very nice and well cared of. Nice views, very nice pool bar.
You need to book other restaurants one day in advance.
The location of the Porto Mare Hotel is absolutely incredible! The view from our balcony was breathtaking, the breakfasts were delicious, and the room was spacious and comfortable. We loved everything about our stay and would definitely come back again!
Enjoyed our stay at Porto Mare. Very relaxing hotel.Great facilities - good pools with lots of sun longers and also grassy space.Had half board and great selection of food for breakfast and dinner.Good location. Walked to the port and old town (45 minutes) and also in other direction to modern shopping centre - 10 minutes from hotel) Arranged car rental for a couple of days from the hotel - and worked out really well.

Hotel is beautiful
Lots of little charges and penny pinching policies made me feel like I was at a lesser hotel. Tea time should be included. Serving tetley tea pissed me off. Charging for cappuccino at breakfast irritating. Front desk unhelpful and at times unfriendly. Would not go back
Nice and comfortable room, beautiful views, great location and delicious food.
Everything was great.
Choice for breakfast very goodDinning area a bit overcrowded at times Room was excellent and the cleaning was superbI used the indoor pool which was great
The indoor/outdoor pool spa, the gardens, the general ambience and the breakfasts were really excellent. Other meals were good but not outstanding.
We had paid for a sea-view room but were given one on the side of the hotel with only a partial view of the sea, where we were disturbed by music until 11pm from the next-door hotel. Our real complaint concerns booking.com. We arrived a day late because the aircraft was unable to land. The hotel generously said that they would not charge us for the night we had missed until they realised that you would be charging them for it. We feel that this was unfair and it will discourage us from using booking.com in future. I would welcome a response from you on this matter as I have been unable to find an email address for Customer Service.
The grounds and gardens are beautiful with a lovely view.Food at the restaurants was good and rooms comfortable
Lovely staff, comfortable room, great food
The bedroom was spacious and had a very comfortable bed. The daily cleaner did a very good job. The buffet breakfast had a vast choice of food. There are numerous pools but we liked the heated indoor pool (we went in January) which allows you to swim outside and has an external jacuzzi too. The gym is spacious with running, cycle and rowing machines. A separate room contains mats and weights. A superb tennis court is available as well as table tennis and a snooker table. They also showed premier league football matches in one of the bars. There is evening entertainment every night e.g. Elton John, Bee Gees tributes. The garden is lovely and very well kept and amazing flower arrangements in reception. There are numerous restaurants in the area - we particularly like Il Basilico and Legacy which are close to the hotel. The staff were very responsive to any queries. The airport bus stops outside the hotel as well as buses into central Funchal where you can pick up other buses to explore the island.
We stayed for 12 days and found that the sunbeds were too hard so the option of having a mattress of some sort would have been appreciated. We were not a fan of the caged budgerigars in the garden.
Fantastic room and facilities in the room. Superb view with balcony. Lovely view/walks around the hotel. Great entertainment in the evenings. Overall excellent!
All great really. However the person at reception when we arrived was quite unfriendly and checking us in seemed to be a bit of an unwanted task for him! Really not a good first impression. Thankfully all the other staff were excellent!
Fabulous location, the grounds well spread out with plenty of facilities. The breakfast was fantastic, something for everybody, amazing.Staff were so friendly and helpful.Everywhere was so clean and fresh.
The gym needs more weights and more equipment and the inside pool needs better heating.
fabulous hotel. stunning locations especially the gardens. standard of service was exceptional. the selection at Atlinida resturant was really impressive. my room was very large and everything you couldvwish
it's very hard to fault anything. the only minor small thing was waiters in early morning at buffet speaking to each other over guests in south Asia language. but probably just get organised. but this is probably a training isdue
Superb Buffett breakfast. Relaxed atmosphere with friendly staff throughout the hotel. Room cleanliness is excellent and the beds and furnishings are very comfy.
We had a junior suit and found the kitchenette a bit of a challenge. No instructions for using the microwave or hob. The hob didn’t work properly and had to be changed. This was done quickly. Unfortunately the fridge too seemed to have a problem and was running far too cold which meant our food was literally freezing.
It did not meet our expectations.
The hotel garden is beautiful, and the view from our room overlooking the sea was wonderful. The hallways and furniture give off an old smell. Breakfast was generous, but unfortunately, it was the same food every day, making it repetitive. There was only filter coffee served from a plastic jug, and we missed having espresso! We also had some issues during dinner, which led to an uncomfortable situation. On our last evening, a waiter rudely informed us that we were seated at a table reserved for other guests. We had no way of knowing, as there was no 'Reserved' sign on it, unlike some other tables. We were then moved to a far-off spot, isolated from everyone else, making it feel almost like a punishment. We had dressed up and planned to enjoy a few glasses of wine and drinks, but after this, we didn’t feel up for it. We ordered only a bottle of water and finished our meal quickly, leaving disappointed and with a bad feeling. Afterward, we went to a nearby restaurant where a friendly, smiling staff served drinks and cocktails, and we left a big tip.Overall, we feel that this hotel did not deliver the experience we were hoping for. Every evening, loud music played below our suite, which we weren't informed about, and the neighboring room was undergoing renovations with strong paint smells every day. As experienced travelers, we feel that for the price, we've had much better service at other places.
